Sleeping in her dorm room, Kat has a horrible dream that her family has been in a horrible car crash. When she wakes up, she marks the date on her calendar; it's only one more day until her parents come to her private school to pick her up for mid-February break.

The next day, she speaks to the school's headmaster about his upcoming absence, specifically because he's going to miss her upcoming performance due to the break. She wishes him a good time in Albany.

Rose, in the school bathroom, decides to go to the school nurse. Over a cigarette, she confides in her roommate that she may be pregnant and wonders whether or not she should tell her boyfriend or her parents.

The next day, the time comes for the students to reunite with their parents for a campus tour and the winter break. Kat waits for her parents but they never come. Rose, meanwhile, heads out to see the performance in the auditorium. Her parents don't make it either, though it was her own fault; she gave the wrong date. After the performance, Kat and Rose both speak to the school administration and both end up forced to stay. Rose is asked to look after Kat in the interim.

Rose and Kat don't seem to get along, especially since Rose just wants to be on her own, not looking after Kat while they wait for their parents. They end up staying the night with two of the nuns who work at the school, just to have guardians with them. That night, Rose tells Kat that the sisters have no hair on their bodies and they wear wigs.

She knows because a few years earlier, a student allegedly walked in on them worshiping the devil. Rose leaves in her boyfriend's car, not coming back until much later. Kat watches from a window upstairs until the car leaves before she heads back into Rose's room.

At this time, a payphone starts to ring in the hallway outside the room.

In a bus station bathroom, Joan has flashbacks of her recent time in a psych ward before pulling off her institutional wristband. She grabs a map outside and tries to figure out how to get to Portsmith before waiting for a bus. She never catches it. Instead, a man at the terminal, Bill, worried about Joan's health and safety, offers a ride with himself and his wife. They're headed east anyways, so they're certainly able to give her a ride to Portsmith. She doesn't notice the bumper sticker for The Bramford School on the rear of their vehicle.

Rose, meanwhile, returns to her dormitory and finds Kat is missing from her bed. She ends up finding her down in the basement, mumbling, kneeling, and bowing in front of the boiler.

Rose ends up bringing Kat up from the basement and sending her to bed, but not before admitting she told her parents to come a day late. Kat, though, says that it's too late for her parents to come since they're dead. That night, she can't sleep in bed; instead, she contorts her body.

Joan wakes up in a hotel having been brought there by Bill and Linda, the former of whom later tells her that she passed out in the back seat of his car for several hours. Joan asks why he's helping her and he says it's because he believes that something odd and divine may be at play; she reminds him of someone, and over dinner he shows her a picture of his daughter-- Rose-- who died nearly a decade ago. Before they leave to beat an anticipated storm, Bill tells Joan that they are actually driving to Bramford, the town just before Portsmith, while Linda says that, unlike her husband, she is not reminded of Rose when she sees Joan.

Joan seems to be a bit amused by the fact that Bill and Linda's daughter is Rose, and before they leave for Portsmith she excuses herself to the bathroom to laugh alone. On the way out, she eyes a knife while Bill talks to a police officer about the coming storm. Soon, they head out early to beat the weather.

Rose awakens to find Kat on the payphone the next morning, apparently talking to Mr. Gordon, the headmaster, about staying at the school and living with him. At breakfast, Kat starts to say grace at one of the nun's prompting, but she throws up on the meal instead.

The nuns look over Kat to ensure she's healthy, but her behaviour shocks them. When the phone rings, it ends up being Mr. Gordon who, to their surprise, announces that he will be returning to the school this afternoon as something concerning has happened. Rose is asked to shovel the drive outside in the meantime, inevitably returning to her dorm room when this is finished. The only reason she does this is because the door to the sisters' house is locked when she tries to get back inside, even though there are only the three people in it.

Mr. Gordon does return to the school with the police, but when he does, he witnesses a horrible sight.

Mr. Gordon finds bodies, sure enough.

The day before her parents arrived, Kat made a call on the payphone, expecting to speak to her parents. Instead, however, it was from a voice telling her that her parents would not be coming to get her and that she would need to kill everyone. She did not see the figures watching her earlier on. Over the next couple of days, the words sunk in. When Rose told her that the nuns of the school were worshipers of Satan, it only confirmed her belief. That night, she received another call, and the day after that, she started to kill.

While Rose was out shovelling the lane, Kat killed both of the sisters acting as her guardians during the break. After stabbing both numerous times, she grabbed two pillowcases and proceeded to decapitate them, leaving the heads in the cases and returning to the dorm. Rose would later find them in the hallway. She would be killed by Kat as well and her head would be placed with the others down in the boiler room. Mr. Gordon and the police would find her down there, hailing Satan and praying.

She would later be committed to a mental institution. Nine years later, she would break out, stealing a driver's license and taking the name Joan.

Bill and Linda continue to drive to Portsmith, nearing Bramford, before Joan asks to pull the car over-- she's going to be sick. When this happens, she kills both of them with the knife she took from the restaurant, decapitating them and heading on foot to the Bramford School. She leaves the heads in front of the boiler, but there's nothing there.

While in the psych ward, Kat became the unwilling participant of an exorcism, during which a malevolent spirit left her body. Upon its departure, she begged for it to stay with her, but it vanished from her side.

As Joan leaves the school, she leaves it alone. Despite the murders of Bill and Linda, no voices come to her. Any attempts to draw back the demon fail.
