A Cat Amongst the Villains Trivia Quiz

James Bond has had some wonderful villains to deal with, but there have been some equally delightful henchmen too. As I search for the best of them match the capitalised villain with the film they were in.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. NICK NACK is epitome of mini evil

Answer: The Man With the Golden Gun

It almost seems oxymoronic to be describing Herve Villechaize's Nick Nack as larger-than-life, but what he lacks for in size he definitely makes up for in charisma and loyalty to Scaramanga (Christopher Lee), the titular assassin in this 1974 film. That loyalty seems questionable and it looks like he is trying to kill his boss by hiring assassins to do the deed. What he is in fact doing is training Scaramanga to ensure that his own skills are kept razor sharp.

After all, who will pay Nick Nack's wages if his boss is dead.
2. PUSSY GALORE falls for James Bond, then deliberately turns on her boss

Answer: Goldfinger

The beautiful Honor Blackman delivers a delicious performance as the impressive Pussy Galore in the third film of the "James Bond" franchise, "Goldfinger" (1964). Don't be fooled by her sexually suggestive name, this mean girl knows her kung-fu, is a highly skilled pilot and commands her own army of female thieves.

After a roll in the hay with our debonair hero, she finds good reason to switch sides and rats on Goldfinger.
3. A minor detail about the THREE BLIND MICE... they can see

Answer: Dr No

The Three Blind Mice are, virtually, the first henchmen you see in a "James Bond" film. There's no cat and mouse about these thugs who are employed by Dr No in this 1962 film, they're playing possum about their sight and they soon put paid to a number of MI6's finest agents. "Dr. No" is the only "Bond" film that doesn't have a theme song, with the opening credits showcasing our villains tapping down the street, accompanied by Monty Norman's calypso styled singing of "Three Blind Mice", making it a pseudo theme.
4. James Bond was almost vermicelli when XENIA ONATOPP put the squeeze on him

Answer: Goldeneye

This is one of the roles that made Famke Janssen a star. Bond has never been able to resist a pretty woman, especially one with the special "thighs" that Xenia possessed. She used her legs as weapons, bring about the demise of many men and James was nearly one of them. Being sultry in this 1995 film, is one thing, but Xenia is also deadly with a machine gun and is skilled enough to fly almost any plane.
5. FIONA VOLPE certainly looks appetising, but her lethality is legendary

Answer: Thunderball

Played by Luciana Paluzzi in this 1965 outing Volpe looks like just another pretty in a "Bond" film but this lady is a cold blooded killer. Armed with a weaponised motorcycle she is both ruthless and efficient. She manages to kidnap Bond but then loses him at a Junkanoo celebration. Emile Largo may have succeeded in his quest if Volpe had stayed by his side, unfortunately Largo's goons were exactly that, goons, and they accidentally kill her.
6. Embarking on a mission to steal gems from Spectre, look out for WINT & KIDD

Answer: Diamonds Are Forever

There is an implied homosexuality about Mr Wint and Mr Kidd, which is rather forward thinking for a film made back in 1971. Mr Wint and Mr Kidd are quirky and certainly don't look like they could harm a fly but underestimate them at your own peril. These two are not just killers, they're artists of the craft and they conjure a diverse range of ways to get rid of their victims.
7. BARON SAMEDI is a laughing lowlight who delves into voodoo

Answer: Live and Let Die

Baron Samedi is an important figure in Haitian voodoo and is used by Mr Big to instill fear into his competitors in this 1973 outing for James Bond. With his painted face, loose limbs and that demonic laugh, he has become one of the most recognisable "Bond" characters. Played with great flair by Geoffrey Holder, he doesn't get to say much on screen... but, oh that laugh.
8. ODDJOB is likely to kill you with just a flick of his hat

Answer: Goldfinger

Two henchmen (is henchwoman a term, or hench-person for that matter?) from the same film. "Goldfinger" (1964), with its diverse range of characters is definitely high on the list of The Best "Bond" films. Harold Sakata, a former wrestler, plays Auric Goldfinger's manservant with an effortless, though violent, grace.

He paints girls till they die, he helps his master cheat at golf, gold bars bounce off his chest and he does it all without saying a word. But his piece de resistance is his hat, a hat with boomerang qualities that can slice through villains, good guys and even marble statues with ease. One could say he's brimful of brutality... and I don't believe I stooped so low.
9. James Bond's fight with RED GRANT in a train sleepaway is one of the best

Answer: From Russia With Love

Many critics argue, and I won't disagree, that "From Russia With Love" (1963) is the best of the "Bond" films. With a wide range of villains in gritty, yet exotic settings, this film bubbles with class and tension. Robert Shaw is Grant and he imbues his formidable character with quiet poise, subtle shades of menace and an awkward charm.

His confrontation with Bond in the tight and claustrophobic confines of sleeping carriage is worth the price of admission alone.
10. My emphatic choice for the number one henchman in a Bond film is... JAWS

Answer: The Spy Who Loved Me

Named Jaws for the incredible set of chompers that he possesses, that not only signal the demise of those that get in his way but they also give him the power to chew through metal. Played by the seemingly indestructible Richard Kiel, his menace, death and destruction could not fit into just this 1977 film, they had to bring him back again in "Moonraker" in 1979.
