Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which film did Hitchcock appear walking past a roadside stand where an elderly man was admiring paintings for sale?

Answer: The Trouble with Harry

Hitchcock was on screen for all of 21 seconds. 'The Trouble with Harry' is a light-hearted murder mystery, very off-the-wall, with a delightful cast of odd characters. It's worth seeing just for the performances turned in by Mildred Natwick and Edmund Gwenn. Shirley MacLaine made her screen debut in this movie.
2. Where did eagle-eyed fans spot the portly Mr. Hitchcock in 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' (1956)?

Answer: In the marketplace in Marrakesh, watching a troupe of acrobats

You can be forgiven if you missed this cameo appearance by the director. He was only on screen for 25 seconds and he had his back to the camera.
3. Sometimes Mr. H. resorted to very tricky devices to make an appearance in his films. Where was he in 'Dial M for Murder'?

Answer: In a photograph

Hitchcock is shown in a class reunion picture that Tom Wendice (Ray Milland) shows to Captain Swan Lesgate (Anthony Dawson). The scene takes all of 13 seconds.
4. Where was Hitch in his last film, 'Family Plot'?

Answer: Behind a frosted glass door at the office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths

By the time 'Family Plot' was made in 1976, people were used to seeing Mr. Hitchcock's distinctive profile because of his television show, so he's relatively easy to spot in this one. The cameo appearance in this movie is 40 seconds long.
5. One of my favourite Hitchcock films is 'North by Northwest' starring Cary Grant. How did Hitchcock make his cameo appearance in this one?

Answer: At a bus stop in New York

Hitchcock is seen missing a bus, immediately after his name fades off the screen in the opening credits. If you missed this one, I'm not surprised. It took all of 2 seconds before Mr. H. faded from the screen!
6. In a 1992 episode of 'The Simpsons' entitled 'A Streetcar Named Marge', an animated Hitchcock is shown walking two dogs past the Ayn Rand School for Tots. The scene is a parody of the appearance Hitch made leaving a pet shop with two Sealyhams in which film?

Answer: The Birds

'The Simpson's' episode was an amalgam of 'The Birds' and 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and the scary creatures were babies not birds! In 'The Birds', Hitchcock is seen for two seconds leaving a pet shop with his two Sealyhams as Tippi Hedren enters the shop.
7. Where did Hitchcock appear in his 1944 movie 'Lifeboat'?

Answer: In a newspaper ad

That lifeboat was pretty crammed, so Hitchcock's appearance is made in the 'before' and 'after' pictures in a newspaper ad for slimming medicine called 'Reducto'. We see the ad for 25 seconds.
8. In which movie did fans spot the chubby director drinking champagne at a big party before making a swift exit?

Answer: Notorious

Hitchcock can be seen for 60 seconds drinking champagne as a guest at the big party thrown in his Rio de Janeiro mansion by Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains). Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant co-star in this spy thriller. Much as I love Cary Grant, I have to admit that Rains steals this movie.

A consummate pro, Rains could say more with a raised eyebrow than most actors can with a page of dialogue!
9. In which film did Hitchcock make his brief appearance walking past a telephone booth close to the end of the movie?

Answer: Rebecca

Usually, Hitchcock made his brief appearance at the beginning of the movie, but 'Rebecca' is an exception, not only because it features the longest of the director's cameos (over two minutes) but it is the only film in which he is seen past the two hour mark of the movie.
10. In one of his cameos Hitchcock is on a street outside an office and is seen for all of six seconds through the office window. Which movie was that?

Answer: Psycho

In his six second cameo in 'Psycho' Hitchcock is wearing a Stetson. Rather incongruous, really, since the director's portly figure hardly coincides with the image of the cowboy. However, I spent my teen years in Calgary, so I know that one doesn't have to be a lean-hipped, tall-in-the-saddle type to don western garb. During Stampede Week everyone in Calgary looks like a ranch hand! Since the opening scenes of 'Psycho' are set in Phoenix, I imagine the same mindset applies.
