Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the knight hero in the movie "DragonHeart"?

Answer: Bowen

Bowen is a knight and dragon-slayer in the film "DragonHeart". In the movie, Bowen is forced to work with Draco, the last dragon on Earth, to fight against an evil king. It is a film that was released in 1996. Draco was created using computer generated imagery (CGI). Dennis Quaid played the part of the knight Bowen, and Sean Connery voiced the part of the dragon Draco. During filming, the crew used a long pole with markers at the top that indicated where Draco's eyes would be when the CGI was inserted into the film.

This allowed Quaid as the knight Bowen to look as though he was giving eye-contact to the dragon throughout the film. The budget for the movie was $57 million, and it made $115.3 million at the box office, so it was well-received by fans when it was released.
2. One classic knight film is the 1952 movie "Ivanhoe". Who wrote the book upon which the plot of the movie is based?

Answer: Sir Walter Scott

Sir Walter Scott published the novel "Ivanhoe" in 1819. The movie basically follows the story that is laid out in the book where Richard the Lionheart, King of England, vanishes. The knight Ivanhoe searches for him and attempts to rescue him. In the meantime, Richard's brother has taken the throne.

There's lots of jousting between knights and a love story before Richard regains his position on the throne. The part of Ivanhoe was played by Robert Taylor in this MGM movie.
3. In "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", who plays Sir Lancelot?

Answer: John Cleese

The Monty Python comedy group created this hilarious movie in 1975 using a parody of the legend of King Arthur and the holy grail. Each of the Monty Python actors plays multiple parts in the movie. For example, John Cleese who plays a major role as Sir Lancelot also plays the Black Knight, the French Taunter, and Tim the Enchanter, as well as some minor roles. Perhaps because each actor played multiple roles thus keeping costs down, this movie's budget was only $400,000.

It made $5 million at the box office, so is a very successful knight movie.

In the US in 2011, it was voted as the second best comedy movie of all time. In the UK in 2000, it was voted the fifth best comedy movie of all time.
4. Although not a knight tale in the true sense of the word, I had to include "The Princess Bride" in this quiz because it is one of my favourites, and it does include a few swashbuckling scenes. Did the actors playing the two main characters Wesley/The Man in Black and Inigo Montoya complete their sword fighting scenes mostly without stunt doubles?

Answer: Yes

"The Princess Bride" is a wonderful tale that combines a love story, some comedy, some swashbuckling, and a story time between a grandfather and his grandson. Two of the characters, Wesley/The Man in Black and Inigo Montoya have a sword fight when Wesley, disguised as The Man in Black chases Montoya in an attempt to rescue his true love Buttercup.

The actors who played these two parts, Cary Elwes and Mandy Pantinkin received training in sword fighting in preparation for the movie. The plot has them fighting with their non-dominant hands first before switching to their dominant hands, so they each trained in both right and left-handed modes.

The two actors did all of the actual sword fighting on their own without stunt doubles. Doubles were used only a couple of times when the actors were required to do somersaults while sword fighting.
5. Which 1995 film has Sean Connery starring as King Arthur and Richard Gere playing Lancelot?

Answer: First Knight

In this film, Lancelot has a romantic crush on Guinevere (played by Julia Ormond) even though she is set to marry King Arthur. They do not act on their feelings because both are duty-bound to their endeavours - hers to marry the King, and his to slay the rogue knight Malagant. Lancelot is called to the Round Table by the King before the King catches him in a warm goodbye embrace with Guinevere. Charged with treason, they stand trial in Camelot just as Malagant invades.

In the ensuing battle, Lancelot kills Malagant, and King Arthur is mortally wounded.

He names Lancelot his successor before he dies, and asks him to look after both Camelot and Guinevere. A love story and a knight story all wrapped up into one. "First Knight" was considered a success when it was made on a budget of $55 million and grossed over $127 million at the worldwide box office.
6. "___________ of Heaven" is a knight movie that is set in the 13th century and stars Orlando Bloom. Complete the title.

Answer: Kingdom

In "Kingdom of Heaven", Orlando Bloom plays Balian, a blacksmith who is recruited by his Baron father to travel to the Holy Land. His father is wounded along the way, so he transfers his title and a knighthood to his son. Balian continues to Jerusalem. During his travel, he is forced to engage in a fight where he kills a man, but spares the man's servant's life.

He arrives at his destination where he earns the respect of his tenants and falls in love. He is caught up in a fight to defend the villagers in his area and is captured, but released because his captor is actually the servant that he released on his travels. During an ensuing battle for Jerusalem, Balian negotiates with the main sultan a safe surrender for the Christians in the city. With a $130 million budget, this 2005 movie was extremely expensive to make.

However, it made $218.1 million in theatres, so was a financial success.
7. Which movie was about an immortal knight, with the knight in question living in New York City in the mid-1980s at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Highlander

"Highlander" begins with the knight in question, Connor MacLeod, meeting up with an enemy in a parking garage in New York City. A sword fight ensues, but the enemy is not killed. Police are called, but do not charge Connor due to lack of evidence. Through a series of flashbacks, viewers learn that Connor was trained to fight for his first battle in 1536.

There, he was wounded by an immortal warrior and should have died, but he recovered because he was now immortal too. He was accused of witchcraft, and was exiled to the highlands.

The story ends with Connor seeking out and decapitating his enemy, and in the process becomes capable of aging. The budget for this film was $19 million, and it only made $12.9 million at the box office, but that didn't stop production of a number of sequels.
8. The title character in "Ladyhawke" transforms between a beautiful woman and a ferocious wolf each night.

Answer: False

In "Ladyhawke" (1985), a bishop is in love with a beautiful young woman. However, his love is not returned. She is, in fact, in love with a brave warrior knight. When the bishop realizes this, he places a Satanic curse on the couple. By day, he is human, but by night, he is transformed into a wolf. By day, she is a hawk and by night, she is a human.

After much intrigue and planning, the couple gets into the cathedral and defeats the bishop's guards. They face the bishop together to break the curse, and then he is killed by the sword of the young man.

Despite having some big Hollywood names (Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Pfeiffer), the film did not make money st the box office. It had an original budget of $20 million and made $18.4 million in theatres.
9. What type of music appears in the medieval movie "A Knight's Tale"?

Answer: Classic rock

"A Knight's Tale" stars Heath Ledger as a servant who poses as his former knight master after the master dies at a jousting tournament. He keeps up the charade even though only members of the nobility were allowed into jousting tournaments. The film is a romantic comedy adventure that is notable for the music used. Even though it is set in medieval times, only classic rock artists such as Queen, War, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, and other music of that genre appears on the soundtrack.

This film was successful at the box office, having been created with a $65 million budget and earning $117.5 million in theatres.
10. What would a knight movie quiz be without a "Braveheart" question? Who directed this movie?

Answer: Mel Gibson

"Braveheart" is the story of William Wallace, the warrior who led the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. It was set in the late 13th century, but was based on an epic poem from the 15th century. Mel Gibson both starred in and directed this movie.

It was extremely successful. In March 1996 at the 68th Academy Awards, it won awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Sound Effects Editing. This movie was made for $65-70 million, and made $213.2 million in theatres, so it was both a critical and a financial success.
