Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the following clue revealed: "The legend writ, the stain affected, the key in Silence undetected, fifty-five in iron pen, Mr. Matlack can't offend"?

Answer: Meerschaum pipe on the Charlotte

After taking the pipe apart, while aboard the Charlotte, Ben notices intricate carvings on the stem of the pipe. To see what the carvings depict, Ben cuts open his finger to use his blood as ink to roll on the stem of the pipe. When Ben rolls the pipe onto paper it reveals the aforementioned quotation.

The copy of "Common Sense" that Ben steals from his father only reveals that Ben knows his father's secret hiding place for money.
2. What is the souvenir item that Ben buys in the gift shop of the National Archives Building that costs him $35.00 plus tax?

Answer: Duplicate of the Declaration of Independence

Ben says, "A souvenir. I thought it might be a good idea to have a duplicate, turns out I was right. Actually, I had to pay for the real one and the duplicate, so you owe me $35, plus tax." Abigail owes him the money for the duplicate because she loses it to Ian when she is hanging off the door of the catering truck. Ben being the great guy that he is, never actually collects the money from Abigail, probably since they fall in love by the end of the movie.

The souvenir that Ben is speaking of is a duplicated copy of the Declaration of Independence that he buys in the National Archives Building's gift shop.

The New England Current is the newspaper that Benjamin Franklin submitted the Silence Dogood Letters to, since this was the paper run by his brother. Franklin had pretended to be a middle-aged house wife in order to have his ideas published in the paper anonymously.
3. What is the alias that Ben gives Abigail, when he and Riley share their concerns for the safety of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives Building?

Answer: Paul Brown

Ben Gates gives the name Paul Brown because "the name Gates is not very highly respected in the academic community." As Abigail says after the chase scene, "Gates, you're that family with the conspiracy theory about the founding fathers." She would never have believe him if he had presented himself as his true identity.

They never give any clues to as where he came up with his alias though.
4. After Ben jumps from the U.S.S. Intrepid into the Hudson, where is it that he ends up when he comes up from the water?

Answer: New Jersey

He ends up in New Jersey where Ian's men give him new clothes and put him in a car to take to Ian. He is taken to New Jersey when in the river because Ian and his men do not want to get caught or have Ben caught. Losing Ben would mean losing the treasure. Since they begin in New York for this part of the movie, they would obviously not end up where they had begun. Pennsylvania is not accessible via the Hudson, and Parkington Lane is a person's grave that they are in search of when they reach Trinity Church at the corner of Heere and Wall.
5. "Okay, Ben, pay attention. I've brought you to the Library of Congress. Why? Because it's the biggest library in the world. Over 20 million books. And they're all saying the same exact thing". What is it that they are all saying, according to Riley?

Answer: Listen to Riley

"Listen to Riley" is what all of these books and documents are saying according to Riley. Little does Riley know that Ben has a plan of his own to steal the document involving the preservation room, which Riley believes is for "delicious jams and jellies". Riley is less optimistic about finding the treasure than his companion on this expedition. Ben's family has searched for generations before and is not about to let any obstacle stand in their way now that they have gotten so far.
6. Where are the original Silence Dogood letters, according to Patrick Henry Gates?

Answer: Franklin Institute in Philadelphia

Patrick Henry Gates had donated the original Silence Dogood letters to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Since Ben's digital scans are inaccessible and the originals are in the Franklin Institute, Riley pays a young boy one dollar a post-it to find the letters using the cyphers he has written down for him. Though Riley has a good idea in doing this, Ian soon catches on when he notices the young boy entering and exiting the museum several times.
7. What is the name of the newspaper that Benjamin Frankin sent his Silence Dogood letters to?

Answer: New England Courant

Benjamin Franklin had written these Silence Dogood letters for the New England Courant because his brother was an authority at the paper. He chose a "middle-aged housewife" to share his thoughts in order to remain anonymous, but still share what he was thinking.
8. What is needed to read the invisible ink on the back of the Declaration of Independence?

Answer: Heat

When attempting to reveal the cypher on the back of the Declaration of Independence, Ben and Abigail use a hair dryer for the heat and lemon juice. This cypher is what the young boy uses when he is looking up the letters in the Silence Dogood letters. Patrick Gates, Ben's father, mentions putting the document into the oven because he believes heat is needed as a reagent for the invisible ink.
9. When Ben says, "180 years of searching and I'm three feet away", what is he standing before?

Answer: Declaration of Independence

Ben, while standing in front of the Declaration of Independence says "180 years of searching and I'm three feet away". He has found the pipe, which leads him to the Declaration of Independence; however, he is still not sure how he is going to steal the document for their use in their "treasure protection". This is just before he decides to begin researching at the Library of Congress.
10. When speaking to Abigail in her office about the safety of the Declaration of Independence, what does Ben tell her is on the back of the document?

Answer: Cartograph

Ben tells Abigail that there is a cartograph on the back of the Declaration of Independence, because he wants to appear more intelligent and less interested in the treasure that he and Riley are attempting to find. Ben does not want Abigail to think that he is a treasure hunter, therefore, he does not want to mention that he is looking for the cypher on the back.
