Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the only silent film that has been awarded the Best Picture Oscar?

Answer: Wings

'The Jazz Singer' is usually credited as being the Best Picture of that year, but the Academy felt it unfair to allow a sound film to compete with silents, and therefore gave it a special award instead. 'Sunrise' (1927) was awarded 'Artistic Quality of Production,' which is technically a 'Best Picture' category as well.
2. How many Academy Awards did James Dean win?

Answer: 0

Despite having been nominated for two Academy Awards, for 'East of Eden' and 'Giant', James Dean did not win any Academy Awards. Watching these movies, though, one feels that he should have been awarded one.
3. How many times had Katharine Hepburn attended the Oscar ceremony during the 20th Century?

Answer: 1

Miss Hepburn has made only one appearance at the Oscars, despite having been nominated twelve times and having won four times. In her single appearance, Miss Hepburn presented Lawrence Weingarten with an honorary Oscar.
4. For what film did Audrey Hepburn receive her one and only Academy Award?

Answer: Roman Holiday

Miss Hepburn received her sole Academy Award for her first starring role, 'Roman Holiday', opposite Gregory Peck.

7. Upon receiving her Oscar in 1935 for 'Dangerous', Bette Davis graciously said that in fact, the best performance of the year had been given by another actress. Who was it?

Answer: Katharine Hepburn

Miss Davis always felt that her 1935 Oscar was a holdover from the previous year, when the Academy failed to even nominate her for her performance in 'Of Human Bondage'. She has said on many occasions that in her opinion, Katharine Hepburn gave the year's best performance in 'Alice Adams'.
8. Which film was awarded the Best Picture Oscar in 1951?

Answer: An American In Paris

Despite tough competition, the year's Best Picture Oscar was awarded to MGM's colourful, joyous musical starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron.
