Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What horror movie series features a killer in a hockey mask who (typically) wields a machete?

Answer: Friday the 13th

The first in this long-running horror franchise (perhaps one of the most famous exemplars of slasher horror) was released in 1980 and directed by Sean S. Cunningham. Although purists would never forget that Jason wasn't the killer in the first film (it was his mother), he would return to Camp Crystal Lake and beyond to stalk teens and, well, virtually anyone in his way.

He never got a hockey mask until "Part III" (1982) but it remains one of the most iconic images in horror. "Friday the 13th" has since been remade under Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes (as was "A Nightmare on Elm Street").

It's earned hundreds of millions of dollars over at least a dozen films.
2. In this horror series, (usually) teenagers fight to survive against none other than death itself and it usually results in their meeting a graphic end. What series is it?

Answer: Final Destination

"Final Destination" was quite well-received upon its release because it took a relatively new concept and approached it without being jokey. Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, and Seann William Scott all starred in the original 2000 film by James Wong. In it, a group of students on a plane bound for Paris decided to get off the flight before takeoff when one of them had a premonition about the plane crashing midflight.

When they realize that their deaths would've been fulfilled, they started dying in the order they were supposed to die on the plane...only in more freakish ways.

The series had a lot of merit with viewers and several sequels were made with varying success; later ones were in 3D.
3. What 1980 John Carpenter film was set in Antonio Bay and starred Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis?

Answer: The Fog

"The Fog" involved a small seaside town's battle with ghosts; one hundred years after Antonio Bay was founded, some of the residents came face to face with ghosts in an eerie fog, who set out to kill people out of retribution. Adrienne Barbeau spent most of the movie in a lighthouse and she was married to John Carpenter at the time while Jamie Lee Curtis had shot Carpenter to fame in "Halloween" (1978). "The Fog" was remade in 2005 and was notoriously bad -- it was one of the worst reviewed films to be released in the 2000s.
4. Three friends sneak onto a chairlift for one last ride down the slopes only to find that they're trapped, in what 2010 horror movie?

Answer: Frozen

Having previously directed "Hatchet" (2006) to a great deal of success in the horror industry, Adam Green set his sights on "Frozen", starring Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore, and Kevin Zegers as three friends who sneaked onto a chairlift (at closing time...before a break in operations...and during sub-zero temperatures). Soon they discovered that the elements were only one thing to fear as their prospects of escaping dwindled.

There were no supernatural elements to the plo t-- no killers and no weapons -- but the realism behind the scenario created a thriller with little breathing space.
5. Directed in 1997 (and again in 2007) by Michael Haneke, in what film do the killers have the ability to rewind the film?

Answer: Funny Games

"Funny Games" was originally made in Austria by Michael Haneke and submitted to Cannes. What it included were brutal crimes perpetrated by two sociopathic teens, both of whom entered a family vacation house to assault, torture, and kill the people inside. One of the teens bets the family that they'll be dead by morning and they go out of their way to rewind the film (and talk to the viewers) throughout and ensure their victory. In 2007, Haneke remade the movie in the U.S. with Tim Roth and Naomi Watts in the starring roles. Just as relentless, the movie was redone shot-for-shot (even the names were the same).
6. Created as a result of the TV show "Project Greenlight", what 2005 horror film was backed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon?

Answer: Feast

"Project Greenlight" started airing on HBO (and Bravo) in 2001 and reappeared every two year for three seasons. The basis of the show involved Affleck and Damon searching for new directors and the final season featured the horror screenplay "Feast", which was later released as a feature. "Feast" was a very graphic flick about monsters attacking people in a bar somewhere.

Although vague plot-wise (even the characters had cliche names), it was a hit with horror fans who like gore and campy nonsense.

It was followed by another two movies in the series. Directors Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton ended up directing several later "Saw" films. "Feast" was also backed by horror director Wes Craven and Miramax.
7. Released in 1996, what Robert Rodriguez vampire movie featured Salma Hayek as the seductress Santánico Pandemónium?

Answer: From Dusk Till Dawn

Written by Quentin Tarantino, this movie was one of the earliest hits for Robert Rodriguez, the man with whom he would later film "Grindhouse". Starring George Clooney, Salma Hayek, Quentin Tarantino, Danny Trejo, Harvey Keitel, and Juliette Lewis, the movie started with a kidnapping as two outlaws tried to cross the Mexican border, but evolved into a full-out vampire movie when the main group entered a bar populated almost entirely by bloodthirsty denizens of the night.

The movie was a cult hit, especially in the years following its release.

There were a couple of sequels; both were produced by Rodriguez and Tarantino, but not directed by them.
8. Milla Jovovich starred as Dr. Abigail Tyler, a psychiatrist trying to uncover a mystery behind alien abductions in Alaska in what 2009 movie?

Answer: The Fourth Kind

Marketed as a completely true story (with footage from seemingly confidential psychiatry sessions), "The Fourth Kind" was a found footage movie, interspersed with dramatizations. When Dr. Tyler (played by Jovovich) started treating patients in Nome, Alaska, she found that many of them shared a common bond -- alien encounters. Soon, she found herself to be a part of something much larger.

While critically panned, the film made a fair bit of money in the box office. Jovovich is better-known in the industry for her role as Alice in "Resident Evil".
9. Although Xavier Gens also filmed "Hitman" in 2007, what French film was released in the same year as part of After Dark's 'Eight Films to Die For'?

Answer: Frontičre(s)

While "Fertile Ground" was later a part of the first collection of 'After Dark Originals', it was not French (nor was it by Gens). "Frontičre(s)" definitely fit the bill in the wave of French body/torture horror; many scenes of horror in this one were extremely graphic.

In the movie, a group of thieves fall into an area of France where they're stalked by a family of vicious killers. Gens later made a more mainstream horror film, "The Divide", in 2011.
10. What 2002 William Malone movie was critically panned and featured a hemophiliac woman (a near impossibility since women can typically only be carriers)?

Answer: Feardotcom

Although this film was made for $40,000,000 and starred Stephen Dorff and Stephen Rea (and horror figure Udo Kier), "Feardotcom" only made back less than half of its budget. The movie included a female character who had hemophilia, but this was only one of the shortcomings. For instance, the plot involved a website (www.feardotcom.com) which killed people after they'd visited it. Nevertheless, the main characters decided to solve the mystery behind it by visiting it (yeah, seriously) and the clock started ticking down. William Malone also directed the 1999 Dark Castle remake of "The House on Haunted Hill".
