Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Come closer so I can whisper to you. You see that horse over there? That was the one in the Australian movie about the colt from Old Regret, who got away and went gallivanting around the Victorian high country. It was based on a poem by A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson, called... you know... it was called, um... jump in any time and help - what was it called?

Answer: The Man From Snowy River

In one of Paterson's most stirring poems, the 'colt from Old Regret' joins the brumbies (wild horses) and a group of men go to rescue him. One of those men is a weedy looking young man from the Snowy River, near Mt Kosciusko in NSW, with his horse. Though unprepossessing in appearance, the pair prove invaluable in retrieving the colt, when single-handedly the man from Snowy River (who is never named) runs the colt down and brings him back, chastened.

Though based on the poem, the 1982 film of the same name has a more complicated plot. It stars Tom Burlinson as Jim Craig, the man from Snowy River, who is sent out to earn his right to farm in the high country.
2. Oh, look how cute this whiskered creature is! Oops, I didn't mean to exclaim so loudly! I know he's upset some fisherman in Maine, and that his name is Andre, but what sort of creature is he?

Answer: Sea lion

Though the true story by Harry Goodridge and Lew Dietz on which the movie is based involves a seal, in the 1994 movie "Andre", the eponymous character is a sea lion.

A sea lion becomes entangled in fishing nets and is drowned; however her pup is rescued. He grows to be a mischievous animal and though most of the townsfolk of Rockport, Maine are fond of him, there are some who wish him ill. Eventually Andre finds a permanent home in an aquarium, but each summer returns to Rockport to be reunited with his friends.
3. Now, that'll do.... Babe was a pig, but can you help me determine what kind of creature Duchess was, in the 1995 movie "Babe"?

Answer: Cat

Duchess, as you can tell by her name, is a very superior sort of cat, with quite a vicious tongue. When she condescends to speak to Babe, she disparages him, telling him the other animals are laughing at him and that Babe will eventually end up on the dinner table. She is proved wrong, of course! Duchess is voiced by Russi Taylor.
4. This one is a puzzle - can you help me discover which animal in "Charlotte's Web" spells the word 'terrific' thus: "T double-E double-R double-R double-I double-F double-I double C, C, C!"? I'll be honking mad if they serve her for dinner!

Answer: Goose

The 2006 film of "Charlotte's Web" stars Oprah Winfrey as the voice of Gussy the Goose.

In a long-familiar tale, the barnyard animals, and in particular Charlotte, a spider, come together to devise a way to prevent Wilbur the Pig finding his way to the smoke-house. They succeed, of course, with the help of Fern Arable, the farmer's daughter. In this version, Fern is played by Dakota Fanning.
5. I know I said to be quiet, but there wasn't much quiet about the eponymous star of "Dunston Checks In"! What kind of creature was Dunston?

Answer: Orangutan

Dunston is an orangutan trained to steal. When he and his owner check into the Majestic Hotel, things become significantly less grand. While on his nefarious duties, Dunston encounters Brian and Kyle, sons of the hotel concierge, who immediately determine to rescue him from his life of crime.

I hope you were able to guess from the picture that Dunston was... er... orange-tan!
6. Tiptoe carefully around these guys... let sleeping snakes lie, I always say. But what a horrible place to find a horde of snakes. In what movie are these repulsive reptiles to be found?

Answer: Snakes on a Plane

The 2006 film "Snakes on a Plane" stars Samuel L Jackson and tells the story of deadly snakes deliberately released on a plane in order to silence a witness in a trial of a mob boss. The FBI successfully overcome the snakes and the witness is saved, and able to give evidence.

Of course the plane on which the snakes were released was different from the one in the picture!
7. I'm just going to sit here on the back of this elephant while you ask the group of animals before us: Which of you was it who starred in the movie "Life of Pi"? I'm sure you'll be perfectly... ahem... fine! Really!

Answer: Tiger

I'm glad to see you didn't get eaten! All this talk about pie has made me hungry!

In the story told by Pi Patel, he and his family are shipwrecked on the way to Canada, with only Pi and a few animals making it onto the life raft. An adventurous journey ends with the arrival in Mexico of only the tiger and Pi.
8. Over here, friend! No, not too close to the creature from "The Edge", you don't want to become his pic-a-nic! What kind of bear is chasing folk around the Alaskan wilderness?

Answer: Kodiak

In the 1997 movie "The Edge", a group of people intend to use the Alaskan wilderness as the back-drop for a photo shoot. However, before they arrive at their intended destination the plane crashes, killing the pilot. Those remaining seek to find a place from which they are more likely to be rescued, but on their way there, a bear stalks them, killing some. Though on the face of it the movie has a simple plot, there is an undercurrent of intrigue that makes the movie quite suspenseful.
9. Now, we have to be careful not to make any sudden movements, lest we startle the cheeky creature found in the book on which the 1971 "Tales of Beatrix Potter" movie is based. Here, take a look - what irascible creature tormented Old Brown Owl with riddles every day for a week?

Answer: Squirrel Nutkin

Instead of showing proper respect to the Old Brown Owl, Squirrel Nutkin dances around and asks the owl if he can solve the riddles (such as the one below) Nutkin propounds.

"Riddle me, riddle me, rot-tot-tote!
A little wee man, in a red red coat!
A staff in his hand, and a stone in his throat;
If you'll tell me this riddle, I'll give you a groat."

(The answer to this riddle is: a cherry!)
10. Shh - look, over there - it's the dog out of... the movie "Turner and" ... "Turner and..." I know he belongs to Tom Hanks' character, Scott Turner - but what IS that dog's name?

Answer: Hooch

In the 1989 movie, Tom Hanks stars as Scott Turner, and Beasley the Dog stars as Hooch. They manage to solve the murder of Hooch's former owner, and interfere with a drug smuggling ring at the same time.

Hooch, also called 'hootch', is another term for moonshine, liquor distilled at home particularly during the prohibition period in the USA.
