Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animated character does NOT fit the category?

Answer: Mater

Sir Tow Mater KBE is really the only 'good' guy of the above choices. Mater is a tow truck who is best friends with Lightning McQueen from the 2006 Pixar film "Cars" and its sequel. He is the "rustiest, trustiest tow truck in Radiator Springs". Mater is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy and is based on the design of a 1951 International Harvester truck.

In fact, Mater's extensive knowledge of automotive parts in "Cars 2" (2011) helps capture villain Sir Miles Axelrod. As for the villains listed: Jafar and his talking macaw, Iago, are both from "Aladdin", about a street rat, Jasmine and a genie (1992); Scar is Simba's uncle and the bad guy from "The Lion King" (1994).
2. Let's go back to a simpler time: in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life", who plays the evil Mr. Potter?

Answer: Lionel Barrymore

Henry F. Potter is wonderfully played by Lionel Barrymore (great uncle of Drew). He is the antagonist in the 1946 Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life", which stars James Stewart as the put-upon owner of the Bailey Savings and Loan. Potter is rich, mean, wheelchair-bound and his only interests seem to be acquiring money and owning the town. Every time George tries to leave Bedford Falls to go on a trip something seems to happen, e.g. his father has a stroke, his brother doesn't take over the Building and Loan as expected, or there is a run on the bank (because Potter stole Uncle Billy's payment) and George gives up his honeymoon money for his customers and friends.
3. Which of the following actresses played Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?

Answer: Louise Fletcher

Louise Fletcher won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched in the 1975 film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", based on Ken Kesey's 1962 book. She is the head administrative nurse at the Salem, Oregon State Hospital, a mental hospital where she is an absolute despot when it comes to giving out medications, privileges and even food and other necessities, when patients disobey or displease her.

Her bosses at the hospital allow this tyranny because it keeps the patients in line. When Randall McMurphy arrives and "does his own thing", Nurse Ratched imposes threats and punishment and, finally, shock treatment to restore order.
4. "The Terminator" was both a villain and a hero.

Answer: True

How can this be, you ask? On the American Film Institute's list of 100 greatest heroes and villains, the Terminator, as played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film by James Cameron, is a cyborg assassin who has been sent from the future by Skynet to kill Sarah Connor to ensure that her unborn son will never be born to lead the fight against them. Whew! He is listed as #22 on the villains' list.

However, our cyborg is also listed as the #48 hero (I guess he was more bad than good) for 1991's sequel "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" which takes place 11 years later where he is now fighting for young John Connor against the evil T-1000.
5. What was the name of Malcolm McDowell's character in "A Clockwork Orange"?

Answer: Alex DeLarge

"A Clockwork Orange" is a 1971 movie from Stanley Kubrick, based on the 1962 dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess. Alex is a sociopath who robs, injures and rapes people simply for his own amusement. While he knows this is wrong, he still can't understand why someone else would care or try to stop him. Alex speaks a teenage slang called Nadsat (which Burgess made up).

He loves Ludwig Van Beethoven, drinks milk spiked with drugs, and he and his gang practice "ultraviolence" (although 'practice' may be the wrong word) with thoughts of torture and slaughter dancing in their heads.

When he is arrested, they try to reprogram him with pictures of Nazi atrocities set to Beethoven's "Ninth".
6. When James Bond asked, "Do you expect me to talk", who responded by saying "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"?

Answer: Auric Goldfinger

While the choices above were all formidable enemies of 007, it was Auric (Latin for 'of or relating to gold') Goldfinger who uttered the famous quote above in the 1964 flick "Goldfinger". This was the third James Bond/Sean Connery film based on Ian Fleming's novels. Gert Frobe plays the dastardly villain who is intent on attacking the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox.

This movie was financially the very first Bond Blockbuster and the first Bond film to win an Academy Award in 1965 for Norman Wanstall for Best Sound Effects Editing. Speaking of villains, Goldfinger had one of the best henchmen, Oddjob, doing his bidding (and it had a really good theme song too)!
7. What was the real name of The Joker, as played by Jack Nicholson in "Batman"?

Answer: Jack Napier

Before his face was disfigured in a chemical accident, The Joker was called Jack Napier; he was a chauffeur and hitman for the mob. After the reverse transfiguration, the Joker becomes Batman's first and greatest foe. Nicholson played the Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 movie with gleeful psychopathy. Did you know that it was the Joker who actually killed Thomas and Martha Wayne, and almost shot young Bruce until his partner urged him to flee? His last words to Bruce were, prophetically, "See you around, kid". If the other choices sound familiar, they were all Nicholson roles, i.e. "The Shining", "As Good as It Gets" and "A Few Good Men".
8. "Mommie Dearest" showed a very unflattering picture of actress Joan Crawford, but which actress portrayed her?

Answer: Faye Dunaway

On the distaff side, it seems to me that Faye Dunaway was more evil playing Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest" in 1981 than she ever was in the 1967 film "Bonnie and Clyde". The movie was based on the book by Crawford's adopted daughter, Christina, where Joan takes in two orphans (a good PR stunt) and, after an unfulfilled love life and her firing from MGM Studios, she takes out all her anger and frustration by abusing her daughter. "NO WIRE HANGERS!" The other choices were Stanwyck in "Double Indemnity", Baxter in "All About Eve" and the #1 female villain of all time, Margaret Hamilton, as the Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz".
9. Not quite as evil as some of the other villains, what was the name of the big bully in the "Back to the Future" series?

Answer: Biff Tannen

If you've seen the "Back to the Future" trilogy, you might remember the extremely annoying adversary of the McFly family, Biff Howard Tannen. Played realistically by Thomas F. Wilson in all three films, the original Biff ("Part I" in 1985) was an arrogant slacker born in Hill Valley, California on March 26, 1937 who made George McFly's life miserable. "Part II" and "Part III" (1989 and 1990 respectively) gave us Biff and Griff, and finally Biff and Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. If you need a scorecard, Biff is the great-grandson of Mad Dog, son of Kid Tannen and the grandfather of Griff, all of whom you might find swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool.
10. I had to end with one of the scariest villains I remember as a child. In which film would you find Reverend Harry Powell with the words "love" and "hate" tattooed on his knuckles?

Answer: Night of the Hunter

I still can't watch this 1955 movie where Robert Mitchum plays a self-declared preacher who moonlights as a grifter and a serial killer. The character is based on Davis Grubb's 1953 novel of the same name. Actor Charles Laughton directed this picture (which was all the more horrifying because it seemed so real).

It seems Harry conned wealthy women into marrying him and then killed them for their money. When the preacher is arrested for grand theft auto, his cell-mate tells him about some stolen money before the cell-mate is executed.

When Harry is freed he goes to the house of the widow and her two kids and... you'll have to see it for yourself if you want to know how it ends!
