Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did William's father say about fighting the English?

Answer: We do not have to beat them, just fight them.

William's father was the one who planted the seeds of freedom in William's head. This quote was to gain support for their fight, but William's father ended up dying in the battle.
2. "I know, I know you can fight, but it's our_____ that makes us men." What word should go here?

Answer: Wits

William thought he should go to the battle too, but he was only a child. His father explained to him that it takes more than strength to win a battle. This came in handy later in the movie.
3. Why did William marry Murron in secret?

Answer: Primae noctis was still in effect.

Primae noctis was a law that the Lord had "first night" rights to any common girl who was married on their lands. William didn't want to share Murron with an English lord so he married in secret. This ended up causing her death.
4. What did the prince do in response to William's rebellion while the king was away?

Answer: He sent the entire English northern army to "quell" it.

The king had left for France to press his rights, which were for land, and millitary support. The princess was the Princess of France too, and as a result any land, and millitary force she inherited went to her husband. The king told his son that while he was away, he wanted the rebellion to be taken care of, which resulted in the destruction of his northern army.
5. "They may take our_____, but they'll never take our______" - fill in the blanks.

Answer: Lives, Freedom

William was shocked when he got to the battlefield and found the men leaving. He made this huge speech, and it ended with this quote. After he finished, they were ready to fight to the last man.
6. Who were the three people whom William chose as his "Captains"?

Answer: Hamish, Hamish's father, and Steven

His long time friend Hamish was one, then there was Hamish's father whom he trusted very much because of his bravery. Steven the Irishman saved William's life while he was out hunting.
7. "He has courage, so does a dog, but it is exactly the ability to compromise that makes a man noble." Who said this?

Answer: Robert the Bruce's father

Robert was the most likely candidate for king and was ready to take his men and join William's fight. His father didn't want him entwined in the matter, because it would lower his chances of being king so he said this to convince him.
8. What city did William sack?

Answer: York

This was after the nobles said that the invasion of England was "Impossible". William then made this huge speech about how it wasn't. When he sacked York, Longshanks said "If he can sack York, he can take all of lower England." This forced Longshanks to send the princess with terms of peace.

While there she found out that Longshanks had hanged Scotlands nobles "under a flag of truce". This cause the princess to become supportive of Wallace, and warn him of danger.
9. What did Steven say as he saw William being tortured?

Answer: Jesus Mercy

Steven couldn't bear seeing William tortured and was praying that William would receive mercy. You also hear Hamish say "Mercy William, mercy". This was when William screamed his last word "Freedom". This caused the Scotsmen to want freedom even more, so Robert the Bruce fought the English after that.
10. What was the last thing William saw before he died?

Answer: Murron

Murron was of course his wife, and sparked his quest for freedom. So naturally the last thing he saw before his death was Murron, which gave him the courage to continue on, and die with honor.
