This movie follows the life of both Jack and Ennis, not only on Brokeback Mountain, but afterwards when they are married with families.

Joe Aguirre is the employer of Ennis and Jack while they are on Brokeback Mountain. Randy Quaid has also been in films such as "Not Another Teen Movie" and appeared in nineteen episodes of "Saturday Night Live." Joe Aguirre is a very aggressively mannered man who confronts Jack about his and Ennis's relationship. Joe is a large man who appears to get everyone to do his work for him, while he's rarely satisfied with the job they do.

Joe Aguirre is spying through binoculars and sees them play-fighting, shirtless. He later confronts Jack about this when Jack goes back to Brokeback Mountain the next year looking for work. Joe is seen only quite briefly in this film. He employs Jack and Ennis, getting them to do all the work for him, and he is not afraid to cut across rules and regulations to make a profit.

This is shown when he orders Jack to sleep out with the sheep the whole summer he is up on Brokeback.

Jack arrives a few days later and their affair begins again, which they try to hide from their wives. This doesn't work as Alma sees them kissing passionately. He lives in Texas with his wife Lureen and his child Bobby. Lureen thinks it's unfair that Jack always has to travel so far to go "fishing" with Ennis. Ennis concludes that Jack traveling up is a fair agreement because his truck wouldn't make it as far as Texas.

Ennis and Alma have become distant, and even though Ennis is unaware that Alma knows about Ennis and Jack's romantic relationship, we assume this contributes to her want for a divorce. Alma remarries to her boss at work, Monroe, and Ennis eventually has a brief relationship with a barmaid, Cassie Cartwright.

We see a brief image of Jack getting beaten, leaving us thinking he is killed for being homosexual. This relates to the story Ennis told him before. This happens near the end of the movie. His wife, Lureen tells Ennis that he drowned in his own blood when pumping up a flat tire.
