Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the Camp the kids went to?

Answer: Camp Ovation

Camp Ovation was a performing arts camp where kids of all ages could go to during the summer holidays. They performed plays and song and dance numbers. The camp let kids get involved in singing, acting and dancing.

The camp that the movie was filmed at is the same camp that writer and director Todd Graff went to when he was younger. Graff returned to this camp, called Stagedoor Manor, as a camp counsellor when he was a bit older and was there at the same time as an 11 year old Robert Downey Jr.
2. What was the name of the hugely succesful musical that Bert Hanley had created?

Answer: The Children's Crusade

Bert Hanley's one and only hit show was called "The Children's Crusade". It was a performance of this show at Vlad's school that got him so interested in the performing arts.

Due to the success of Hanley's show he became a respected name amongst the theatrical community, and was invited to the Camp to direct the end of camp benefit. The benefit was the highlight of the six weeks at the Camp. All the kids were involved and they performed songs and dances from numerous shows.
3. Which legendary composer and lyricist made a cameo appearance in the movie?

Answer: Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim appeared as himself in "Camp". He attended the benefit at the end of the summer. The kids all started to go crazy when they saw him, after all he was, according to Michael "The greatest songwriter in musical theatre!"

The name Sondheim is synonomous with the theatre, some of his works include: "West Side Story", "Company", "Follies" and "Sweeney Todd". He has won 8 Tony awards between 196 and 1984. Sondheim was a mentor to Jonathon Larson the creator of "Rent", many of the musicians in the movie Camp were in the band for the Broadway run of "Rent".
4. What was the name of the sports counsellor at the camp?

Answer: Buddy Miller

When the kids were on the bus going to the camp the sports counsellor introduced himself. He ran a sports programme at the camp for any of the kids who were interested.
However, playing on the stereotype of the 'art student', none of the children showed any interest in taking part in sporting activies.

This fact was shown in a deleted scene on the American DVD release when one of the kids, Patrick, walked by Buddy Miller who attempted to get him to play basketball with him.
5. One of the four names below was someone who did NOT have a role in this movie. Who was it?

Answer: Michael de Jesus

Robin de Jesus played the part of Michael Flores, an insecure teenager trying to come to terms with his sexuality, whilst dealing with bad acne and his parents' rejection.

Daniel Letterle played Vlad Baumann, a "clichéd American teenager" who wanted to be everyone's friends. He was the only straight guy at the camp and as such had the attention of not only the guys and the girls, but also the camp counsellors.

Kahiry Bess played Petie, a young quiet boy who had a flair for dancing. He was very quiet and was looked after by his older brother at camp. He ended up playing a big part in the camp benefit in a tap dancing duet.

Steven Cutts played Shaun, Petie's older brother, who looked out for him throughout the course of the movie. He wanted his brother to know he could "be himself and still be amazing". Shaun and Petie were coloured, and Shaun felt the shows they performed didn't let them be themselves on stage. He challenged Glenn, the camp director, to do something about it.
6. Which of these actresses played the part of Fritzi?

Answer: Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick played the part of Fritzi. She started out as Jill's servant, eager to please and serve her in a bid to receive acknowledgement and friendship in return. However, when Jill got sick of Fritzi and told her to get a life, Fritzi's attitude changed and after getting the push she needed from a completely oblivious Bert Hanley (he was just trying to cheer her up), she planned her revenge against Jill. Fritzi poisoned Jill and ended up taking her role as lead in a show they were performing. From then on they were sworn enemies. In the end Fritzi and Jill both missed out on the part in the finale of the benefit show due to their feuding and it went to a quiet and more deserving camper, Jenna. She went on to amaze her parents with her talent for singing.

Alana Allen played Fritzi's nemesis Jill Simmons, Sasha Allen played Dee and Joanna Chilcoat played Ellen.

Anna Kendrick had a part in the TV series "The Mayor" where she played Sadie Winterhalter.

Alana Allen was one of the finalists for VH1's show "In Search of the Partridge Family".

Sasha Allen has starred in both "Camp" and "Stick It in Detroit". She was a semi-finalist on VH1's 'Born To Diva' competition.

Joanna Chilcoat first appeared professionally when she was nine as the principle character Katy in the syndicated children's show Bloopy's Buddies from NJT Studios.
7. Vlad was involved with three girls over the course of the movie.

Answer: False

Vlad was in fact involved with four different females throughout the movie.

Firstly there was Ellen. They were in a show together in the first week and he stood up for her to the "crazy director". Their romance blossomed and they became quite attached to each other.

Next there was Jill. Despite the fact that Vlad was seeing Ellen, he didn't reject Jill's advances and went to her room one afternoon when he was meant to be practising his lines with Ellen.

After that there was Dee. When Vlad found out about Dee and Michael's time together, Dee hinted at Vlad's feeling for Michael being something more than platonic. To prove himself he kissed Dee. Unfortunately for them Ellen appeared at the door at that exact moment and caught them.

Finally there was Julie, Vlad's girlfriend back home. This was the final straw for Ellen and she lost control of her emotions at this point. Vlad however saw the error of his ways and asked for forgiveness at the end of the film.
8. Michael's dad stopped talking to him because he went to his high school prom in a dress.

Answer: True

Michael decided to show up to his school prom in a dress. However he was not permitted to attend and his teacher ripped his ticket up in front of his face. He then got beaten up by a group of boys from his school which resulted in him arriving at camp with a black eye. Later on in the film we saw him with a letter explaining he was not allowed into the prom because he was wearing a dress which was shorter than regulation.
9. What did Vlad's OCD cause him to do constantly if he didn't take his medication?

Answer: Turn words into numbers based on the number of letters and add them up.

Michael was playing the part of Romeo in the camp production of Romeo and Juliet. When he noticed his parents hadn't shown up he ran off stage and hid. Vlad found him and tried to find out why he was so upset. Michael explained that he wore a dress to his high school prom and was refused entry.

His father was deeply ashamed of him and he was also self-conscious about his bad skin. Vlad, trying to make Michael feel better, explained about his suffering from OCD and how as a result of it he was effectively a Prozac junkie at such a young age. Vlad went on to say that his OCD was why he wanted to act, as when he was on a stage being someone else he didn't suffer from it. Vlad discussed his condition with Michael in a bid to make him see he was not the only person who had issues to deal with.
10. What song did Bert Hanley interrupt Vlad performing, when he felt it was time to give a few of the guys a reality check?

Answer: I Sing For You

Bert Hanley, a jaded one time musical director felt the kids at the camp had too much enthusiasm and belief in the what the future might hold for them. When he saw them sitting back, relaxing and enjoying themselves, he felt it was his job to inform them that life wasn't easy, it would just be a series of disappointments one after the other.

They all had issues themselves and they weren't going to grow up well adjusted if they did't change their attitudes. This understandably left the kids crushed and Vlad took it upon himself to go and try to find out why Bert was acting like that. Vlad spoke to Bert and discovered that basically he was very twisted and resentful of anyone who might achieve something he had not.
