Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which film links these three characters: The Rumpo Kid, Marshall P Knutt and Sheriff Burke?

Answer: Carry On Cowboy

'Carry On Cowboy' was the 11th film in the series and was released in 1965. The Rumpo Kid was played by Sid James, Marshall P Knutt by Jim Dale and Sheriff Burke by Kenneth Williams. Set in the fictional Stodge City in the Wild West, the film revolved around the mistaken identity of Dale's character who was believed to be a real marshal when Marshall was just his name.

He and Judge Burke were tasked with bringing the Rumpo Kid to justice.
2. Vic Spanner, Sid Plummer and a horseracing tipster budgie named Joey all appear in which 'Carry On'?

Answer: Carry On At Your Convenience

Joey belonged to Sid Plummer (played by Sid James) and his wife Beattie (played by Hattie Jacques. He won Sid a lot of money in the betting shop leading to the booking banning him from future bets! Vic Spanner was played by Kenneth Cope. The film centred around a toilet-making factory and the many strikes the workers took for whatever reason they could find.

It was the 22nd film in the series and released in 1971, at a time when trade unions and strikes had started to make their mark in Britain.
3. Captain S Melly, Gunner Shorthouse and Sergeant Major Bloomer are amongst the great names of the characters in which film?

Answer: Carry On England

'Carry On England' was released in 1976 and was the 28th in the series. Captain Melly was played by Kenneth Connor, Gunner Shorthouse by Melvyn Hayes and Sergeant Major Bloomer by Windsor Davies. Set in the Second World War, Captain Melly has been put in charge of a new bunch of recruits and, with the help of the strict Sergeant Major Bloomer, aims to turn them into a force to be reckoned with.

Although the recruits are more interested in sneaking into the girls camp and playing jokes, they show at the end they have the skill to fight off an unexpected airborne attack and protect England's defences after all.
4. Which 'Carry On' has the characters Jenny Grubb, Esme Crowfoot and Sidney Bliss?

Answer: Carry On Loving

Jenny Grubb was played by Imogen Hassell in her only 'Carry On' appearance. Esme Crowfoot was played by Joan Sims and Sidney Bliss by Sid James. 'Carry On Loving' was the 20th in the series and released in 1970. It focused on a dating agency named 'Wedded Bliss' which was run by Sidney Bliss and his girlfriend, Sophie (played by Hattie Jacques). Most of the clients end up getting inappropriate matches and many funny storylines stem from this.
5. Captain Fearless, Midshipman Poop-Decker and Sally. In which film would you find these names?

Answer: Carry On Jack

'Carry On Jack' was the eighth film in the series and was released in 1963. Captain Fearless was played by Kenneth Williams, Midshipman Albert Poop-Decker by Bernard Cribbins and Sally by Juliet Mills. The film centres on Cribbins' character who, after many years, has just gained promotion to the rank of Midshipman.

As he celebrates this in a tavern the night before his ship is set to sail, a barmaid named Sally knocks him out and assumes his identity as she wants to be able to board the ship and try and locate her seafaring boyfriend. Chaos then ensues when the real Poop-Decker wakes up and boards as there are now two Midshipman Poop-Deckers on board. And the fake one is more competent than the real one!
6. In which medical 'Carry On' would you find Francis Bigger, Doctor Tinkle and Nurse Sandra May?

Answer: Carry On Doctor

'Carry On Doctor was released in 1967 and is the 15th film in the series. Francis Bigger was played by Frankie Howerd, Doctor Tinkle by Kenneth Williams and Nurse Sandra May by Barbara Windsor. 'Carry On Doctor' focuses on a local hospital ward with probably some of the most peculiar patients you're likely to find. One of these is Francis Bigger, a 'faith healer', who after tripping over after giving a lecture is admitted to the ward.

He constantly complains of being badly-handled and thinks he deserves better care than the other patients. Doctor Tinkle is the doctor that everyone loves to hate and is the reason for Nurse May's arrival at the hospital as she wants to declare her love for him.

After being rejected she gets to know Doctor Kilmore (Jim Dale) but after a while decides to leave.

After an unfortunate series of comical events, Doctor Kilmore is made to resign after some underhand work by Doctor Tinkle. The patients are up in arms as Kildare is a much-loved doctor and they exact their revenge on both Doctor Tinkle and Matron (Hattie Jacques) making them reinstate Kilmore and giving him a promotion.
7. Timothy Gorse, Stanley Benson and Tom Potter are three of the main characters in which 'Carry On'?

Answer: Carry On Constable

Released in 1960, 'Carry On Constable' was the fourth film in the series. Special Constable Timothy Gorse was played by Charles Hawtrey, PC Benson was played by Kenneth Williams and PC Potter by Leslie Phillips. Three new rookie constables (Benson, Potter and Charlie Constable) are sent to a suburban police station as cover for officers off with flu. Before even arriving they unwittingly help a gang of bank robbers escape! Many funny stories of miscommunication and ineptness follow but then together they foil a robbery on progress, stopping the getaway car and finding the money.
8. In which of these films would you find the characters Vic Flange, Stuart Farquhar and Pepe?

Answer: Carry On Abroad

'Carry On Abroad' is the 24th of the series and was released in 1972. Vic Flange was played by Sid James, Stuart Farquhar was Kenneth Williams and Pepe was played by Peter Butterworth. The film follows Vic Flange and his wife as they take a package holiday to Els Bels, an island in the Mediterranean. Stuart Farquhar is the rep for the tourist agency they booked with and he escorts a wide range of funny characters over. Pepe is the hotel manager at the resort. Once they arrive, they find the building work not quite finished which leads to some amusing scenarios.

Some other travellers include a monk, an alcoholic and a flirty friend of Vic's, played by Barbara Windsor.
9. Citizen Camembert, Duke de Pommefrite and Sir Rodney Ffing are among the great-named characters of which 'Carry On' film?

Answer: Carry On Don't Lose Your Head

This is a particular favourite of mine. Released in 1966, 'Don't Lose Your Head' is the 13th film of the series. Citizen Camembert is played by Kenneth Williams, the Duke de Pommefrite is Charles Hawtrey and Sir Rodney Ffing (otherwise known as the Black Fingernail) is Sid James.

The film is a take on the Scarlet Pimpernel story and set during the French Revolution in 1789. Citizen Camembert and his sidekick, Citizen Bidet (Peter Butterworth), are methodically executing the French nobles who have gone against the government. Outraged at this, Sir Rodney Ffing dons the disguise of the Black Fingernail and, assisted by his friend Lord Darcy Pue (Jim Dale), goes about saving as many nobles as he can, leading to Citizen Camembert making a desperate pursuit of him.
10. Captain Wellington Crowther, Flo Castle and Doctor Arthur Binn are to be found in which of these films?

Answer: Carry On Cruising

The first to be made in colour, 'Carry On Cruising' was made in 1962 and is the sixth in the series. Captain Crowther was played by Sid James, Flo Castle was Dilys Laye and Doctor Binn was Kenneth Connor. Aboard the S.S Happy Wanderer, Crowther is hopeful for a promotion to a transatlantic ship after ten years on cruise ships. Thinking he's leaving, the new crew do their best in making him proud of them.

But in their efforts to please, their over-eagerness leads to a good few disasters. In the end (when they stop trying) Crowther is finally impressed and declares that he's not leaving after all. And Doctor Binn, after plucking up the courage, declares his love for Flo and proposes to her on the deck.

She of course says yes and it's happy ever after!
