Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charles Boyer worked with director Anatole Litvak on three films. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Appointment for Love

The director on "Appointment for Love" was William A. Seiter. Charles Boyer starred with Bette Davis in "All This, and Heaven Too", with Danielle Darrieux in "Mayerling" and with Claudette Colbert in "Tovarich".
2. In which of his films did Charles Boyer play the father of Glenn Ford?

Answer: Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Charles Boyer plays Argentinian Marcelo Desnoyers, whose carefree son Julio (Ford) is intrigued by his cousin's fervor for the Nazis. Julio travels to Europe and decides to fight against the Nazis as part of the resistance. Released in 1962, "Four Horsemen" also stars Ingrid Thulin, Lee J. Cobb, Paul Lukas, Yvette Mimieux and Paul Henreid.
3. Which character did Charles Boyer play in "Around the World in Eighty Days"?

Answer: Monsieur Gasse, Travel Agent

Monsieur Gasse is the travel agent who arranges for the hot air balloon trip. Ronald Colman plays the Railway Official, Charles Coburn plays the Steamship Company Clerk and Buster Keaton plays the Train Conductor. Phileas Fogg bets the gentlemen at his club that he can travel around the world in eighty days.
4. Who is Charles Boyer's leading lady in "Love Affair"?

Answer: Irene Dunne

From 1939, "Love Affair" also stars Maria Ouspenskaya and Lee Bowman. Two people meet and fall in love aboard ship and agree to meet six months later, but the woman is injured just before their meeting. This movie was nominated for six Academy awards including Best Actress for Dunne and Best Picture. "Love Affair" has been remade as "An Affair to Remember", starring Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr and Cathleen Nesbitt, and "Love Affair", starring Warren Beatty, Annette Bening and Katherine Hepburn. I personally feel that the first "Love Affair" is the best of the bunch.
5. In what film did Jean Arthur play opposite Charles Boyer?

Answer: History is Made at Night

Jean Arthur plays Irene, the ex-wife of a still jealous shipowner named Bruce. While in Paris, Bruce attempts to get Irene in a compromising position to get her to return to him, but Paul (Boyer) helps her out and they fall in love. Irene agrees to return to the States with Bruce, with Paul soon following.

After months of searching, he finds her and they plan to return to Europe. They are sailing on one of Bruce's ships and he is still so insanely jealous, that he compels the captain to steer into iceberg-infested waters, endangering the passengers and the ship. To tell you more would give away the ending.

It's a nice romantic movie for those who like that kind of stuff.
6. Charles Boyer appears in "Barefoot in the Park", "The Garden of Allah" and "Arch of Triumph". Put them in chronological order.

Answer: The Garden of Allah, Arch of Triumph, Barefoot in the Park

"The Garden of Allah", from 1936, also stars Marlene Dietrich, "Arch of Triumph", from 1948, also stars Ingrid Bergman, and "Barefoot in the Park", from 1967, also stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
7. Which of these films did Charles Boyer appear in with Claudette Colbert?

Answer: Tovarich

"Tovarich", released in 1937 is, for the most part, hilarious. Boyer and Colbert play Russian royalty who had to flee their homeland. They are now living in Paris, and being penniless, they take jobs as butler and housemaid in a wealthy household. Things go well until a Commissar who comes to the house for dinner recognizes them.

When they speak with the Commissar of the atrocities happening in their homeland, it does become a bit depressing, but the movie is still worth seeing. Boyer and Colbert also appeared together in "The Man from Yesterday" in 1932, and "Private Worlds" in 1935.
8. In "Algiers", Charles Boyer's leading lady is Hedy Lamarr.

Answer: True

Charles Boyer plays Pepe le Moko, a French jewel thief who lives in the native quarter of Algiers, where it is difficult for the police to capture him. Once he meets and falls in love with Gaby (Lamarr), who reminds him of home, he finds it increasingly difficult to remain in the Casbah where he is safe. And someone who is not happy about Pepe and Gaby is his mistress, Ines. "Algiers" was released in 1938, and earned four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Actor for Boyer.

The cartoon character 'Pepe le Pew' was based on Boyer's character in "Algiers".
9. Charles Boyer won a Best Actor Oscar for "Gaslight".

Answer: False

Although nominated four times, Charles Boyer never won a Best Actor Oscar. He was nominated for "Conquest" (1937), "Algiers" (1938), "Gaslight" (1944) and "Fanny" (1961). He received an honorary Oscar in 1943 'For his progressive cultural achievement in establishing the French Research Foundation in Los Angeles as a source of reference (certificate)'.
10. In which film did Charles Boyer play Napoleon Bonaparte?

Answer: Conquest

In "Conquest", Greta Garbo plays a Polish countess who Napoleon takes a liking to. She rebuffs him because she is married, and is later urged by the Polish leaders to become his mistress so that he will make Poland independent. Directed by Clarence Brown, who directed many of Greta Garbo's films.
