Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1995) "Have you ever fallen in love with someone you haven't even talked to? Have you ever been so alone you spent the night confusing a man in a coma?" - Lucy Moderatz

Answer: While You Were Sleeping

After Peter is mugged on Christmas Day, he falls, unconscious, onto the train tracks. Lucy, who has spent weeks fantasizing about him, pulls him off the track just before he's run over by a train, thereby saving his life. In the hospital, while he lays in a coma, she is mistakenly identified as his fiancée, a fact which endears her to his family. Unable to sleep, Lucy spends the first night of Peter's coma sitting by his side, trying to explain to him why his family believes her to be his fiancée.

This quote is part of that explanation. Life gets complicated when Peter wakens, becomes convinced that she really is his fiancée, and asks her to marry him. Unfortunately by this time she's already fallen in love with his brother. Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher star under Jon Turtletaub's direction.
2. (2003) "Then let us be rid of it...once and for all. Come on Mr. Frodo, I can't carry it for you...but I can carry you." - Samwise Gamgee

Answer: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The quest to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom and bring peace to Middle Earth has almost reached an end. However, burdened by the weight of the Ring, which is resisting its own destruction, Frodo is having trouble completing his task. Aware that he will not be allowed to share the load and carry the Ring, Sam makes this moving (but decidedly cheesy) speech before picking up Frodo and carrying him up the mountain.
Peter Jackson directed this faithful interpretation of Tolkein's amazing trilogy.
3. (1997) "You're why cavemen chiseled on walls." - Simon Bishop

Answer: As Good As It Gets

This very funny movie explores the relationship between waitress Carol Connelly, artist Simon Bishop and obsessive compulsive writer Melvin Udall, after their lives become intertwined. After being badly beaten by one of his models, Simon not only bankrupts himself paying for his medical bills, but finds that he has lost his ability to draw or paint.

When the three of them go on a road trip, to find Simon's parents and ask them for money, Simon rediscovers his inspiration to create, with Carol as his model.

This is when this (decidedly cheesy) quote is said. Melvin discovers that his growing love for Carol can teach him how to be more human. Jack Nicholson, Greg Kinnear and Helen Hunt starred under James L. Brooks' direction.
4. (2000) "What is the one most important thing our society needs?" - Stan Fields "That would be harsher punishment for parole violators Stan...(stunned silence from the audience)...and world peace." - Gracie Hart

Answer: Miss Congeniality

When the Miss United States Beauty contest is threatened, the FBI sends in an undercover agent, posing as a contestant. Despite her innate disgust for beauty pageants, Gracie must partake fully in all of the activities, both onstage and behind the scenes.

This interchange occurs during her onstage interview. She tries to answer the question honestly, but finds that the standard, cheesy answer is what everyone is really expecting. Despite her initial reservations, Gracie comes to respect the contestants, and becomes very determined to uncover the culprit and protect the girls. Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine, Benjamin Bratt and William Shatner starred under Donald Petrie's direction.
5. (1997) "Kimmy says if you love someone, you say it. You say it right then, out loud. Otherwise the moment just..." - Michael O'Neill "Passes you by." - Julianne Potter "...passes you by." - Michael O'Neill

Answer: My Best Friend's Wedding

Although they have been best friends for years, Julianne doesn't realize how much she loves Michael until he tells her that he's marrying someone else. Then she becomes determined to break up the marriage in the few days left before the ceremony. These lines are part of a conversation she has with Michael, when he's trying to explain why he wants to marry Kimmy, and Julianne is trying to subtly show that she is more of his soul mate.
Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz star under P.J. Hogan's direction.
My thanks go to Nannanut, for this cheesy suggestion!
6. (1999) "Never give up. Never surrender!" - Commander Peter Quincy Taggart

Answer: Galaxy Quest

The cast of a short-lived science fiction television program spends the rest of their careers living off the fanaticism of the show's fans, by making appearances at conventions and supermarket openings. When a group of real aliens, who have modeled their entire existence after the intercepted transmissions of the show, arrive seeking help they are assumed to be another group of fans. However it soon turns out that they are real, and are in very much need of help to avoid being exterminated.
This quote is Taggart's signature line from the television show, which is uttered several times throughout the movie.
Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Tony Shalhoub star under Dean Parisot's direction.
7. (2000) "What kind of knight in shining armor would I be if the man I love needs rescuing and I just let him walk out my door?" - Darcy McGuire

Answer: What Women Want

Sleazy womanizer Nick Marshall is passed over for promotion because it is felt that a woman's perspective is needed, and Darcy is hired. When a freak electrocution leaves him with the ability to hear what women are thinking, Nick is not above using this information for his own personal gain, and before too long his usurper is being fired, and the job is being offered to him.

The problem is that the experience has humanized him in ways he never anticipated, and he is very much in love with Darcy. Nick loses his mind-reading powers, comes clean and confesses his sins to Darcy, and is surprised to be fired for his efforts. Of course she relents and speaks this line. Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt and Alan Alda starred under Nancy Meyer's direction.
8. (1998) "I wanted it to be you...I wanted it to be you so badly." - Kathleen Kelly

Answer: You've Got Mail

Joe Fox's company is putting Kathleen Kelly's small bookstore out of business, which creates a great deal of tension between the two characters. What they don't realize is that they have already become close friends through their Internet identities, and are already falling in love. Joe discovers this connection first, and realizes that if the relationship is going to go anywhere, he needs to smooth out the tension between them first. She says this line when he finally arranges a meeting, and she learns his real identity.
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks starred under Nora Ephron's direction.
9. (2002) "Oh Harry, if you die down there, you're welcome to share my toilet." - Moaning Myrtle

Answer: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The Heir of Slytherin has opened the Chamber of Secrets, and released the monster held captive therein. With Hermione turned to stone and Ginny taken by the heir, Harry and Ron are on their own and must work fast to save Ginny. They discover that the entrance to the chamber is in the girls' bathroom, the very one in which Moaning Myrtle was killed. Myrtle, who is hanging around in ghost form, says this to Harry just before he is about to enter the chamber to rescue Ginny.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson starred under Chris Columbus' direction.
10. (1990) "So, what happens after he climbs up and rescues her?" - Edward Lewis "She rescues him right back." - Vivian

Answer: Pretty Woman

He was a wealthy businessman with killer instincts, and an under-developed sense of humanity. She was a streetwalker with a heart of gold. When a business arrangement brings them together for a week, they have a lot to teach each other about what's lacking in their lives. This line is delivered at the very end of the movie, when he "rescues her", according to her childhood fantasy, to take her away to a better life. She then rescues him right back, by bringing more humanity into his life.
Julia Roberts and Richard Gere star under Garry Marshall's direction.

Thank you for taking my quiz. If you have any cheesy lines you would like to send me, I'd be happy to consider them for a future quiz!
