Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Say it ain't so Joe, say it ain't so.' - 1988

Answer: Eight Men Out

Said by the little boy to "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, while Joe was coming out of the building after signing a confession, that he participated in the fixing of the 1919 "Black Sox" World Series. Director John Sayles was contractually obligated to making "Eight Men Out" under 2 hours long. The film is 12 seconds under 2 hours.
2. 'Let them play.' - What movie is this from?

Answer: Bad News Bears in Breaking Training

The chant was started by Bob Watson of the Houston Astros, because the exhibition Little League game between the Bears and Toros at the Houston Astrodome was cut short because of a time constraint. Paul Brickman wrote "Bad News Bears in Breaking Training".
3. 'Do you know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? That's 25 hits...25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points...ok. There's 6 months in a season. That's about 25 weeks, that means if you get just one extra flair a week, just one. A gork, you get a ground ball, you get a ground ball with eyes! You get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week and you're in Yankee Stadium.' - 1988

Answer: Bull Durham

This is just one of the many excellent quotes from this movie. Said by Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) to Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) in the pool hall after Nuke told him that he was called up to the Majors. Director/writer of "Bull Durham", Ron Shelton was formerly a minor league player in the Carolina League.
4. 'You play ball like a girl!' - 1993

Answer: The Sandlot

Said by Hamilton "Ham" Porter (Patrick Renna) to Phillips (Wil Horneff), when he and the sandlot kids are confronted by a arch-rival Little League team, the Tigers. Ham and Phillips get into a verbal confrontation that ends with this quote that puts the entire group into a shocked silence. "Sandlot" won the 1994 Young Artist Award for Outstanding Youth Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

The team included; Tom Guiry (Smalls), Mike Vitar (Benny), Patrick Renna (Ham), Chauncey Leopardi (Squints), Marty York (Yeah-Yeah), Brandon Quintin (Kenny), Grant Gelt (Bertram), Shane Obedzinski (Repeat), and Victor DiMattia (Timmy).
5. 'A lot of things don't make sense, Monk. I was a chemistry teacher. I can tell you that now, and the sum of money I received for teaching science to the youth of this state for an entire year was a little less than I got in a single afternoon for tossing a 5 ounce sphere past a young man holding a stick.' - 1949

Answer: It Happens Every Spring

Said by Vernon Simpson "King Kelly" (Ray Milland) to his teammate Monk Lanigan (Paul Douglas) toward the end of the movie. Vernon is a chemistry professor who accidentally discovers a liquid that repels wood. With his magic liquid in his glove, he heads out to pitch for the St. Louis ball club. Ray Milland has appeared in over 150 films and has made several TV guest appearances on "The Love Boat", "Charlie's Angels", and "Hart to Hart".
6. 'Clear the mechanism.' - 1999

Answer: For Love of the Game

This was said by Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) to himself as a trick for concentration while pitching a perfect game for the Detroit Tigers against the New York Yankees. While pitching to the last batter in the ninth inning, Chapel says to himself "Think Billy, don't just throw." In "Bull Durham" he says the complete opposite to pitcher Nuke "Don't think, just throw."
7. 'The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that was good, and what could be again.' - 1989

Answer: Field of Dreams

Said by Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) to Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner). The quote is finished off by "Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come." Ben Affleck and Matt Damon appear as extras in "Field of Dreams".
8. 'There's no crying in baseball.' - 1992

Answer: A League of their Own

This was Jimmy Dugan's (Tom Hanks) response to Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram) when she started to cry when Jimmy was yelling at her for throwing the ball to home, instead of second base, allowing the hitter to advance to second base. Hanks' character, Jimmy Dugan, is loosely based on the life of baseball great Jimmy Foxx.
9. 'Pitcher's got a big butt! Pitcher's got a big butt!' - 1993

Answer: Rookie of the Year

Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas) to the pitcher of the Dodgers, when he was taking a lead off of first base. I heard this quote about a million times while I was coaching Little League back when this movie came out. Thomas Ian Nicholas began his acting career at age 7 on TV's "Who's the Boss".
10. 'I coulda broke every record in the book..and then when I walked down the street people would've looked and they would've said 'there goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was in this game'.' - 1984

Answer: The Natural

This quote by Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) to Iris Gaines (Glenn Close) closely resembled a statement made by the great Ted Williams. "...There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived." Also, like Williams, Roy Hobbs wears uniform number 9 and both hit a home run in their last career at bat.
