Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jack is appointed Deputy Director of C.I.A. when Admiral Greer becomes sick. What is Greer sick with?

Answer: Cancer

Admiral Greer is dying of cancer. This is talked about openly during the beginning of the movie. We also see Admiral Greer going through treatment later in the film. He eventually dies and we see Jack at his funeral.
2. After a close friend of the President is murdered along with his entire family, apparently by Colombian drug cartel members, the President tells his National Security Adviser James Cutter to go after the Colombians. What exactly does Cutter tell his subordinate, Mr. Ritter, to do?

Answer: Take the gloves off

Ritter reminds Cutter later, "You said take the gloves off." This is after Cutter expresses concern over the level of violence his little operation is using. The U.S. insertion team was blowing up the drug lords planes, manufacturing facilities, and houses!
Two of the other answers I made up, and "Avenge me" is from "Red Dawn" at the drive in theater/pow camp. Sorry, I just threw that in there, as I always liked "Red Dawn".
3. Who is the ex soldier turned C.I.A. operative that helps set up and run the whole guerrilla war for the U.S. in Columbia?

Answer: Mr. Clark

When Jack tells Admiral Greer he is being sent to Columbia, the Admiral suggests Jack look up Mr. Clark while down there. Clark is played by Willem Dafoe. The character of John Clark appears in other Tom Clancy novels as well, but this one's my favorite use of him.

He runs the operation for Cutter and later when Cutter cuts off the team and gives away their location to the drug lords, Clark goes with Jack Ryan to look for his men.
4. What type of bomb is dropped on the big 4x4 truck outside the drug lord's house by the carrier based Navy fighter plane?

Answer: Cellulose

Felix Cortez, the security chief for the drug lord, finds the residue and has it analyzed. It comes back as a paper residue. Cortez identifies the cellulose bomb in his computer's database of known munitions.
Jack makes the same finding on his own using reference books. After trying to figure out why the impact crater doesn't look like a car bomb, Jack starts looking for a bomb that leaves no traces and comes across the cellulose encased laser guided bomb.
5. A very sad scene is the one where Jack's motorcade is ambushed driving through town. How does Jack escape the deadly ambush of RPG and automatic weapons fire?

Answer: He gets behind the wheel of one of the cars and drives himself out of it.

Jack finally makes it out by driving right through a garage type door and into the next street over!
There were a lot of enemy on the roof tops, so it would have been a bad move to go up there!
An interesting note is that Harrison Ford apparently did his own driving during that scene.
6. Jack Ryan goes to meet Clark as Admiral Greer had suggested. Clark asks Jack Ryan, "Are you a coffee drinker Mr. Ryan?" When Jack replies "yes", Clark suggests Jack try a certain brand of coffee, thereby giving Jack a clue to follow which will lead him to the drug lords and their money trail. What brand of coffee does Clark suggest?

Answer: Lindo

This is the scene where Jack Ryan meets Mr. Clark meet in the hotel lobby. After investigating Clark's tip, Jack discovers that the President's friend, Hardin, was indeed doing business with a major drug lord. Jack tells the President, "He was paying a little bit too much for this coffee - $6,200 a pound."
7. "Variable this is Knife... over! Variable this is Knife... where are you?" Referring to this radio transmission, who is Variable?

Answer: Clark

Knife refers to the insertion team of U.S. commandos calling Clark for help but Cutter had turned off their communications relay. They were on their own.
8. Jack and Clark try to buy a helicopter to go look for the insertion team. The salesman tells them it costs two million dollars. Jack next tells the helicopter salesman they just want to take it for a test drive. How much was the deposit for the test drive?

Answer: The same as the selling price

The helicopter salesman asks for a two million dollars purchase price. When Jack asks how much of a deposit was needed for a test drive, the salesman replies, "Two million dollars." Jack asks him if he would take a company check and hands the guy his C.I.A. business card. The salesman then nods yes.
9. When the F.B.I. director's secretary is killed, Jack and his wife go to her apartment and meet the police there. While talking to the police, a message is played over the dead woman's answering machine. Jack stops them and says, "Play that back. You have a recording of the killer's voice... maybe." What is the message on the machine?

Answer: "The Machine is still on, Moira."

Jack uses the voice recording to cross reference with N.S.A. and C.I.A. intercepts of radio and phone traffic among suspected drug lords and other criminals in Central America. He comes up with a match: Felix Cortez, former security chief to Fidel Castro, now working for the drug lord Escobedo. Cortez was dating the dead woman to gain access to intel about her boss, who was the director of the F.B.I. Cortez was planning to meet her one last time to kill her now that he had gotten the info he wanted and was very aware that he might be recorded if the machine was left on.

As a security expert, he knew better than to leave such a trail... but he did!
10. Clark and Chavez blow up a 4x4 truck outside a major drug lord's house using a laser guided bomb during a meeting of many local drug lords. Why does Chavez hesitate right before the bomb impacts?

Answer: There are kids playing in the yard they hadn't seen before.

This may be my favorite scene of the whole movie. The media and other drug lords think it is a car bomb set off by a rival. When the truck pulls up to the house, Chavez is aiming the laser designator for the incoming bomb and asks, "What is that?" Clark tells him, "That's your new target, unless it's not big enough?" A few seconds later, as the bomb is almost about to impact, Chavez sees kids playing in the yard.

He tries to get Clark's attention but it's too late.
