Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This child-star played a character in an 80s sitcom whose first name was Jonathon. He was almost killed by Joe Camber's dog, Cujo.

Answer: Danny Pintauro

Danny Pintauro played Jonathon Bower in 'Who's the Boss?' In Stephen King's book version of 'Cujo', Tad Trenton did indeed die before his mom got the better of the crazy St. Bernard.
2. Nancy reappears as a psychiatrist in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street III', but which future wife of Nicolas Cage is she there to rescue with her own knowledge and experience?

Answer: Patricia Arquette

Patricia Arquette appeared as Kristen Parker, a teenager troubled by nightmares (will those adults ever learn?). She and Cage divorced in September of 2001.
3. Linda Blair, who convulsed and Tourettes'd her way to fame in 'The Exorcist', has a single line as a reporter in a horror movie from the 90s. What is the film?

Answer: Scream

The demon's voice was dubbed by Mercedes MacCambridge, whom Friedkin reportedly fed raw eggs, alcohol and cigarettes before strapping her into a chair to achieve the desired effect. Effective, huh?
4. More than any other genre, horror movies are dogged by legend and rumour - perhaps we would like the mystery of the screen to follow us into reality. Did the little girl from 'Poltergeist' really die?

Answer: Yes

She did indeed - at the age of twelve, Heather O'Rourke passed away, after three 'Poltergeist' movies, of cardiopulmonary arrest. The fact is often disputed, the debater claiming that Dominique Dunne, who played the older sister, was the one who died.

This, too, is in fact true - Dunne was murdered by an abusive boyfriend in 1982. Dana is conspicuously written out of the subsequent films. Maybe there is something in that saying about life imitating art...
5. Which star of a 60s musical played Susie Hendrix, a blind woman terrorized by conmen Alan Arkin, Jack Weston and Richard Crenna in Terence Young's 1967 film, 'Wait Until Dark'?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

It's not horror trivia, but interesting nonetheless: Audrey Hepburn didn't actually sing in 'My Fair Lady' - she was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also provided the vocals for Deborah Kerr in 'The King and I' and Natalie Wood in 'West Side Story'. OK, OK - Audrey apparently had to wear contacts for her role in 'Wait Until Dark' because her eyes were just too expressive.
6. 'The Lawnmower Man' was closely based on Stephen King's short story.

Answer: False

Apart from the inclusion of a large, blonde gardener who wears denim dungarees, this flop bears absolutely zero, zilch, zip relation to the original text whatsoever. King, whose bizarre story deals with a murderous ungulate-humanoid version of the god Pan, quite rightly sued the producers, who subsequently removed his name from the credits.
7. Which stunningly good horror spoof starred bug-eyed Marty Feldman in a classic send-up role?

Answer: Young Frankenstein

One of the greatest, groaniest exchanges in movie history appears in this Mel Brooks classic. Passenger: Pardon me, boy. Is that the Transylvania Choo-Choo?' Porter: (in impenetrable European accent) Tvack Tventy-Nine. Zay, kann I giff you a shine?
8. The rising star director of two Brad Pitt films and two Madonna videos helmed one of the 'Alien' movies. Which was it?

Answer: Alien III

Yup - God bless David Fincher. Before dazzling the world with 'Se7en' and 'Fight Club', this bright spark worked on Madonna's 'Immaculate Collection' and Aerosmith's 'Big Ones You Can Look At'.
9. Before 'Red Dragon', the movie, hit cinemas in 2002/3, Michael Mann (he of 'Ali' fame) had already filmed the novel back in the 80s. What was his version called?

Answer: Manhunter

This rather unusual film, which ends a good twenty minutes of plot-time before the remake, starred Joan Allen as Reba, Brian Cox as Lecktor, Dennis Farina as Crawford and William Petersen (our beloved Gil Grissom from 'CSI') as Will Graham.
10. My personal favourite bit of movie trivia ever: Alfred Hitchcock's choice for 'blood' in 'Psycho' was...

Answer: Bosco's Chocolate Syrup

It seems the Master of Suspense couldn't find anything else that dripped just right and, given the black-and-white format, he was free to use colors other than red. Hitch bought the rights to the novel from Bloch for $9000, then went around buying up copies of the book so that he could keep the ending - and that famous middle - a secret.
