Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city was the movie "Dark City" filmed?

Answer: Sydney, Australia

The back streets of Sydney were used for the wet, exterior shots, whilst interior shots were filmed at Fox Studios there. Sets from this film, including rooftops, buildings and other exteriors, were reused when filming "The Matrix".
2. Who plays the character Inspector Frank Bumstead?

Answer: William Hurt

Inspector Bumstead is the one who is looking for John Murdoch. William Hurt was born 20 March 1950. He rose to fame with roles in movies such as "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (for which he won an Oscar in 1985), "Children of a Lesser God" (1986) and "Broadcast News" (1987), but can probably be best remembered for his roles as Prof John Robinson in "Lost in Space" and as the father Edward Walker in M Night Shyamalan's "The Village". Hurt also stars in the Kevin Costner movie, "Mr Brooks", as Costner's evil, murder loving alter ego, Marshall. William currently lives in Oregon with his two sons, Willie and Sam from his marriage to Heidi Henderson.
3. What is the name of the mythical place that John Murdoch searches for throughout the movie?

Answer: Shell Beach

Murdoch remembers Shell Beach as a place from his childhood. As he searches for a way to get there, it seems that no one in the city can remember how to get there. It is then that he realises that it exists as only a memory manipulation of the Strangers.

Memorable Quotes:
John Murdoch: "Here, let me ask you a question. You heard of a place called Shell Beach?"
Inspector Frank Bumstead: "Sure."
John Murdoch: "Do you know how to get there?"
Inspector Frank Bumstead: "Yeah."
John Murdoch: "Tell me."
Inspector Frank Bumstead: "Right. You just...you go to the..."
John Murdoch: "Where? Where do you go?"
Inspector Frank Bumstead: "Just give me a second, will you..."
John Murdoch: "You can't remember, can you?"
4. The Strangers have perfected the ultimate technology, the ability to alter physical reality through will alone. What is the name of this technology?

Answer: Tuning

With the ability to alter physical reality through willpower, the Strangers change the city every night at midnight. They also change peoples memories to match the new city and their new circumstances. For instance, one day they may be the boss of a company, and the next, a street sweeper.

They have no memory of their previous life. The Strangers are doing this in an effort to find out what makes us human, i.e., our soul. It is this they need to preserve their own race which cannot reproduce and is slowly dying.
5. Who is the leader of the Strangers?

Answer: Mr. Book

Mr. Book is the the leader of the Strangers, but in truth they operate as a kind of hive mind. They are all interconnected and can feel and think what each of the others do.
Mr. Book is not a nice guy and will stop at nothing to get inside the mind of John Murdoch.
6. Is the Dark City located on Earth?

Answer: No

It is a self-supporting spaceship. We never find out where the spaceship/city is located, but possibly it is within our own solar system.

Memorable Quote:
[Murdoch opens the door to what should be Shell Beach and instead sees the same sign he saw earlier advertising it. Murdoch walks up to the sign, confused]
Dr. Schreber: "There is no ocean, John. There is nothing beyond the city. The only place home exists...is in your head."
[Chuckles a bit at the irony]
7. When Mr. Hand talks to Emma on the dock, what does he tell her?

Answer: All answers are correct

Mr. Hand is using Emma to try and find the whereabouts of her husband, John Murdoch. Mr. Hand tracks her down to a small park on the banks of the river that runs through the city.

Memorable Quote:
Mr. Hand: "There used to be a ferry when I was a boy. Biggest thing you ever saw, lit up like a floating birthday cake."
Emma Murdoch: "That's just what my husband once said to me on this very spot."
Mr. Hand: "Where is your husband now?"
Emma Murdoch: "I wish I knew. What brings you here?"
Mr. Hand: "I met my wife at this place."
Emma Murdoch: "It's where I first met my husband."
Mr. Hand: "Small world."
8. What train does John Murdoch try to catch in an effort to get to Shell Beach?

Answer: The Express

Whilst riding a suburban train, Murdoch looks at a map of the route and finds Shell Beach on there. He asks the conductor which train will get him there and is told he needs to catch the Express. He dismounts at the next station and waits for the Express.

After a short wait, the Express appears but carries on through the station without stopping. Murdoch asks a porter why it didn't stop and the porter replies, "Because that's the Express".
9. Why are the Strangers so intent on capturing John Murdoch?

Answer: All answers are correct.

John Murdoch may represent the next step in human evolution as for some reason he has developed the ability to tune. This should take several human lifetimes to master this power so naturally the Strangers want to know how it could have happened. With this new ability, Murdoch has the power to directly confront the Strangers, something they obviously do not want to happen.

Memorable Quotes:
Mr. Hand: [stomps on a newspaper clipping] "So it seems you discovered your unpleasant nature."
John Murdoch: "Who are you?"
Mr. Hand: "We might ask the same question, yes? Sleep... now."

Mr. Hand: "I have become the monster you were intended to be."
10. What is the eventual fate of Inspector Bumstead?

Answer: He falls off the city and disappears into space.

After using hammers to break through the brick wall and finding nothing but empty space, Murdoch and Bumstead turn around to find the Strangers standing there. Bumstead grabs his gun and kills one of them, but another one grabs him and they both fall out of the spaceship and float off into space.
