Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens in the trenches of Belgium, during WWI. What advice does a young Poirot give his Captain about the approaching attack?

Answer: to advance early

The Captain receives orders to attack Yser Bridge. The orders suggest that the men wait a couple of hours for the wind to change and to use gas to mask their advance. Poirot advises that they leave immediately because the birds are flying and he has observed that this always signifies a change in the wind.

The Captain takes his advice and they take the Germans by surprise and win the offensive. However Poirot does not notice a tripwire in time and an explosion kills his Captain and badly wounds his own face.
2. In a visually powerful scene, we next see Poirot lying among many wounded men in a large hospital enclosure. His love, Katherine, is visiting. What is her advice when he shows her his facial injuries?

Answer: grow a moustache

When Katherine comes to visit him, he is lying with the damaged side of his face down. He reminds her that he told her not to come and she replies that she is also a nurse and picks up his chart to read. He turns his head and shows her face, asking her what she thinks and she tells him to grow a moustache. He takes her hand and kisses it.
We learn, much later, that she was killed by a mortar shell, while visiting him at Christmas, something he had begged her to do. He carries her picture around, cracked glass and all, and has never loved another. He also took her advice and grew a moustache, one that greatly resembles one sported by his Captain who was killed by the explosion.
Katherine is played by Susannah Fielding.
3. Poirot is to be found in a nightclub in London, watching an American Blues singer. Heiress Linnet Ridgeway makes quite an entrance. Her friend, Jaqueline (Jackie) de Bellefort greets her. What favour does Jackie ask of Linnet?

Answer: to give her fiance a job

Before Linnet arrives, Jaqueline is seen dancing with her fiance in a manner that is very sensual (and would never have happened at the time), attracting the attention of Poirot. When she excitedly talks to Linnet about her fiance, Simon, she is free with admissions about how intimate their relationship is. She asks Linnet for a favour and Linnet immediately offers money, telling her to call it a wedding gift. Jackie says no, she would like Linnet to give him a job on an estate Linnet had recently purchased. When Simon joins them, Jackie introduces him and Linnet says she is pleased to meet her new land agent.
Jackie tells Simon to dance with Linnet as a way of thanking her.
Linnet is played by Gal Godot, Jackie is played by Emma Mackey and Simon is played by Armie Hammer.
4. Six weeks later, where does Poirot spot his friend Bouc?

Answer: flying a kite off of a pyramid

Poirot is admiring the pyramids when he sees some idiot who has climbed halfway up one, flying a kite. He yells at the man to show some respect for the pyramid when he realises that it is his old friend Bouc. (We first met Bouc in "Murder on the Orient Express".)
Bouc climbs down to greet Poirot, introduces him to his mother, who is painting a picture of her son flying a kite, and invites him to join them at the hotel to celebrate a wedding.
Bouc delivers the line "Of all the pyramids in all of world you had to walk into mine."
Bouc is played by Tom Bateman.
5. Surprisingly, the newlyweds are Simon and Linnet, who met only six weeks previously. Who crashes the wedding celebration?

Answer: Jaqueline de Bellefort

Jackie, Simon's one-time fiancee, shows up unannounced and uninvited. From comments made, we deduce that this is something she has done a few times, since being dumped by Simon.
Linnet tries to hire Poirot to protect them but he advises that they just go home to her estate and live, and love, safely there. Linnet is willing to do this but Simon seems resistant.
Poirot does speak with Jackie who tells him that she and Linnet met during a school play, "Antony and Cleopatra", where Jackie was supposed to play Cleopatra until a last minute change was made to give the role to Linnet. (Much as Simon had done to her.) She tells Poirot that she won't die alone, showing him that she has a .22 caliber gun.
Linus and Andrew are two men who are both harbouring love for Linnet.
6. What is the name of the river boat that the party moves onto?

Answer: Karnak

The next morning, Simon unveils his plan to evade Jackie, presenting the boat, Karnak, on which they will depart for a ride down the Nile. He tells Linnet that they will have the boat to themselves as far as the Temple of Abu Simbel, where new passengers would be boarded.
Linnet instructs all her guests to get onboard, telling them not to worry about their luggage and such as her personal maid, Louise Bourget, will look after it for them.
When onboard, Linnet tells Poirot that, even surrounded by friends, she doesn't feel safe with any of them.
Interestingly enough (and importantly) the crew of the ship disembarks every night, leaving the ship to the passengers.
Louise is played by Rose Leslie.
7. Who is Bouc in love with?

Answer: Rosalie Otterbourne

Rosalie is the very level-headed niece of the blues singer who happens to love Bouc back. We learn that Poirot's real reason for being in Egypt is that he has been hired to investigate Rosalie because Bouc is in love with her.
Poirot has done his investigation of Rosalie and finds her to be an upstanding young woman of fine character and good heart. He wishes to conclude his 'secret case' and 'put it to rest'.
Rosalie is played by Letitia Wright.
8. What happens at the Temple of Abu Simbel?

Answer: A rock falls, nearly crushing Linnet and Simon.

The group is wandering around inside the Temple and Simon draws Linnet outside to indulge in a little passion, where Linnet quotes lines from the play "Antony and Cleopatra". Warned by a sound, they look up to see a large stone falling towards them. Simon pulls Linnet out of the way and they avoid being crushed. The sandstorm, noted earlier as being hours away, does hit but everyone makes it safely indoors.
Oh and Jackie is the extra passenger who boards at that place.
9. Back on the boat, Linnet goes to bed early, promising to take a sleeping pill. Jackie and Simon get into a big fight. Simon tells her that he is sick of her and doesn't think that he ever loved her and she shoots him. Who finds Linnet dead?

Answer: Louise

Because he's been shot, Simon is attended by Linus Windlesham, who is a doctor and spends the night in his room. Jackie becomes hysterical and is taken to Mrs. Bowers' room who gives her a sedative. (Mrs. Bowers is a former nurse and companion to Linnet's godmother, Marie van Schuyler.)
Earlier in the evening Simon and Linnet told Poirot of their intention to return home and encouraged him to drink champagne with them to celebrate. Poirot is not accustomed to champagne and has a strong reaction. After announcing that he is "not built for boats or champagne" he retires to his room where he sleeps through everything.
Linus Windelsham is played by Russell Brand, Mrs. Bowers is played by Dawn French and Marie VanSchuyler is played by Jennifer Saunders.
10. What is the final clue that leads Poirot to deduce that Mrs. Bowers and Marie are more than companions?

Answer: Mrs. Bowers' bed has not been slept in.

The next morning, when he wakes, he visits Mrs. Bowers' room, where she has spent the night with a heavily drugged Jackie. Later in his big reveal, he talks about how unlikely it is that a woman who has embraced communism and given away a fortune (as Marie VanSchuyler has) would have a servant.

He also comments on the fact that Mrs. Bowers has shown, through the food that she expresses a liking for, that she once had money. When he visits Jackie in Mrs. Bowers' room, he notices that the bed has been made with a certain kind of corner and has not been slept in. From this he concludes that they are more than just companions. Mrs. Bowers talks about a fortune lost (as Poirot concluded) and the women are seen leaving the boat holding hands.
