The Da Vinci Code Trivia Quiz

Ron Howard's interpretation of Dan Brown's novel has stirred up almost as much controversy as the book. I enjoyed both, but this quiz is about the movie.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the protagonists of the movie was an albino monk who was doing the work of his mentor. What was the monk's name?

Answer: Silas

Silas had been a favourite of Bishop Aringarosa ever since he came to the Bishop's assistance when the Bishop was being beaten by thieves. The bishop pronounced him to be an angel, which made him become devoted to the bishop, since his father used to call him a ghost.
Under the Bishop's direction Silas had been murdering the four main guardians of the Grail, and searching for the keystone which would lead him to its location.
Silas was played by Paul Bettany and Bishop Aringarosa was played by Alfred Molina.
2. Among the clues that Jacques Sauniere left at his own murder scene were four lines written with a curator's pen, which could only be read with a special light. Captain Fache erased one of those lines before Robert Langdon was brought to the scene. Which line did he erase?

Answer: P.S. find Robert Langdon

Captain Fache interpreted the line to mean that Sauniere was identifying Langdon as his killer. However Sophie knew that P.S. stood for Princess Sophie, her grandfather's nickname for her, and the sentence meant that she should seek out Langdon's help.
'O draconian devil' turned out to be an anagram for Leonardo DaVinci, and 'Oh lame saint' an anagram for The Mona Lisa.
The digits of the Fibonabbi sequence gave them the clue they needed to access the safety deposit box.
Jacques Sauniere was played by Jean-Pierre Marielle, Robert Langdon by Tom Hanks, Captain Fache by Jena Reno, and Sophie Neveu was played by Audrey Tautou.
3. Sophie revealed to Langdon that she was orphaned at a young age and was raised by her grandfather, until she went to boarding school. How were Sophie's family killed?

Answer: in a car accident

Sophie's parents and brother were killed in the accident, leaving her to be raised by Jacques Sauniere, the man she thought was her grandfather. She later learned that she was also reported to have died in the accident, and that Sauniere was not her grandfather.

He chose to raise her so that he could train her mind, giving her the skills she needed to unravel his puzzles after his death. This was a deviation from the book where Sauniere was her real grandfather.
4. The albino monk was acting under the direction of Bishop Aringarosa, who was sending him on his errands, based on information received from a mysterious phone contact. This contact promised to deliver the location of the Grail, for a price of course. By what name was this mysterious contact known?

Answer: Teacher

The identity of Teacher, not revealed until near the end of the movie, turned out to be Sir Leigh Teabing. Teabing was a Grail specialist and sometimes friend of Langdon's whom Langdon and Sophie turned to for help in deciphering some of the clues. Teabing took the bishop's money and convinced him that he was helping them locate the Grail so that all evidence of its existence could be buried. However his intentions were really quite the opposite.
Sir Leigh Teabing was played by Ian McKellen.
5. In ancient times the Knights Templar served as joint guardians of the Grail, but they were betrayed and wiped out. What was the name of the remaining group, dedicated to protecting the Grail, of which Jacques Sauniere was Grand Master?

Answer: The Priory of Sion

The Priory of Sion was a old group formed to protect the secret of the Grail. The Knights Templar was the military offshoot established to recover the Grail from Jerusalem. After the Knights were wiped out, the Priory of Sion continued to hide the location of the Grail, and the documents that supported it.

There were always four main guardians of the Priory, but their identities were found out, and they were murdered by Silas, after they revealed the location of the keystone.
6. Bishop Aringarosa was part of a secret group, within the Roman Catholic Church, that's purpose was to keep the secret of the Grail from ever being known, destroying it if necessary. What was the name of this group?

Answer: The Shadow Council

The Priory held that the Holy Grail was Mary Magdalene, and that she was not only the wife of Jesus Christ, but was pregnant at the time of the crucifixion. If proven to be true, this information would totally destroy the foundation on which the Roman Catholic Church was built.

Therefore, as long as there had been a Priory of Scion, there had been a Shadow Council, whose purpose was to wrest the proof away from the Priory. The members of this Council came from every part of the church. Bishop Aringarosa was a member of Opus Dei, a very conservative Catholic Society. The name of the Council was mentioned by Aringarosa, when speaking with the Cardinal after the break-up of one of their meetings.
7. According to Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of The Last Supper, how many wine glasses, or goblets were on the table?

Answer: 0

Da Vinci was reportedly a member of The Priory of Scion, and his painting of The Last Supper was used by Leigh Teabing to explain to Sophie how the Grail was believed to be Mary Magdalene. The absence of any grail on the table was cited as further evidence that the Grail referred to was actually Mary, since the whole legend of the Grail sprang from it being used by Christ at The Last Supper.
8. What were the albino monk's dying words?

Answer: "I am a ghost."

When the police came to arrest him, Silas chose to try and shoot his way to freedom. He accidentally shot Bishop Aringarosa. Thinking he had killed the man who had taken him in and been his mentor, Silas allowed himself to be shot. As he lay dying, he spoke these words, which were a reference to what his father used to call him.

Despite the deeds that he had committed, you could almost feel sorry for him at this point, as he seemed to realize that he was not the wonderful angel that the bishop had led him to believe, but the despicable ghost whom his father had hated.
9. The cryptex that was removed from the safe deposit box needed a five letter code for it to be opened safely. A clue from the box in which the cryptex had been stored sent them to the grave of Sir Isaac Newton in order to find this code. What was this five letter word?

Answer: apple

Having been sent, by the clue, to look for the orb at Newton's grave, Langdon noticed that among the many different orbs represented there, there was no representation of an apple. Since Newton's discovery (as it were) of gravity was predicated by an apple dropping on his head, this struck Langdon as being significant. Teabing had been identified as being Teacher by this point and was holding a gun to Sophie's head while Langdon solved the puzzle. Langdon tricked Teabing by springing the trap in the cryptex, making Teabing initially believe that the information contained within had been destroyed. Teabring did figure out the ruse, as he was being arrested by the police.
10. Who was the last descendent of the union between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene?

Answer: Sophie Neveu

The clue inside the cryptex led them to Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. Here they found a newspaper article on the deaths of Sophie's entire family, that claimed that Sophie had also perished in the accident. The documented evidence of the descendents of Christ was also kept there, as well as the outline of the sarcophagus which held the remains of Mary Magdalene, which had been moved.
Sophie learned that Sauniere was not her real grandfather, but she was reunited with her real grandmother, who was there with the group of the Priory of Scion, guarding the evidence.
