Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sands of Iwo Jima" What is Wayne's character's name in this film?

Answer: Sgt. Stryker

Stryker's squad greatly despises him for his seemingly heartless way of training them. As Stryker says; "You gotta learn right, and you gotta learn fast. Any man that doesn't want to cooperate, I'll make him wish he had never been born". The three incorrect answers are also famous Sgts. Barnes, from "Platoon", Carter, from "Gomer Pyle", and Hartman, from "Full Metal Jacket".
2. "Sands of Iwo Jima" What branch/division of the Armed Forces is highlighted in this movie?

Answer: Marines

Sgt Stryker tells the squad numerous times, "You'll learn to fight like Marines, and you'll learn to die like Marines". "From the halls of Montezuma / To the shores of Tripoli / We fight our country's battles / In the air, on land, and sea". The Marine Hymn is heard during the opening and closing credits. "Semper Fi, Do or Die"----USMC.
3. "Sands of Iwo Jima" Who plays PFC Al Thomas?

Answer: Forrest Tucker

PFC (Private First Class) Thomas had a score to settle with Sgt. Stryker. He blamed the 'Sarge' for being demoted to Private for falling asleep on guard duty. He battles Stryker at every turn. However, they gain each others' respect in the end. Forrest Tucker's most famous role came as Sgt. O'Rourke in the T.V series 'F-Troop'.
4. "Sands of Iwo Jima" What does Private Thomas do that gets someone in his squad killed?

Answer: stops to drink coffee

Thomas goes to get ammunition for the squad. On the way back he stops for coffee and idly "jabbers" with some fellow Marines. This delay causes the death of PFC Hellenopolis, and Cpl. Bass to be wounded by the Japanese. Later, Stryker finds out, and "beats the tar" out of Thomas. Guilt ridden, he immensely apologizes to Stryker, and admits; "I loved that Greek" (i.e Pvt.

Hellenopolis, his friend).
5. "Sands of Iwo Jima" Another nemesis in the platoon is PFC Pete Conway. From what, does The Duke's character save his life?

Answer: hand grenade

Stryker served under Conway's father. So, the sergeant is seemingly harder on Pete than anyone else in the squad. During training a recruit accidentally drops a live grenade near a group of men. Conway (John Agar) is distracted while reading a letter from his wife. Stryker tackles him out of harm's way.

As Stryker says, "When are you gonna wake up Conway? If you ever wanna see that dame again you better keep your mind on your work".
6. "Sands of Iwo Jima" What is Wayne's character's famous saying throughout the film?

Answer: Saddle Up

"Saddle Up" means let's get moving, or let's get back in the war. Stryker utters those words time and time again as he readies them for training and battle. PFC Conway honors Stryker with "Saddle Up.! Let's get back in the war", after the sergeant's death at the end of the movie.
7. "Sands of Iwo Jima" The Duke dies at the end of this film. What do the troops find on his body/person?

Answer: a letter to his son

Al Thomas reads the letter to the guys, as Stryker lays dead. This is a tear jerking moment for the men, as well as for the viewers of the film. A portion of the letter goes as such; "Maybe someone will write you someday and tell you about me. I want you to be like me in some things, but not like me in others. Always do what your heart tells you is right. If there was only more time. I...". Unfinished, PFC Conway takes the letter and vows to finish it for Sgt. Stryker.
8. "The Cowboys" What is the name of The Duke's character in this film?

Answer: Wil Andersen

"How old were ya Wil when ya went on your first cattle drive"? Wil Andersen responds, "Thirteen, but my old man's pants fit me". Mr. Andersen owns The Double O Ranch near Missoula, Montana. He has weathered every obstacle he's ever faced on his spread, but the one that lay ahead may be the toughest.

The three other names mentioned are from "Lonesome Dove", the greatest western, in my opinion.
9. "The Cowboys" What is the reason The Duke has to hire young boys as cowhands?

Answer: gold fever

"A fool comes to town with some gold dust, and every mule-head from fifty miles around lights out after him". His ranch hands have abandoned him to join the gold rush. He and his friend are talking about his dilemma, and while passing by the local schoolhouse, his friend (Slim Pickens) brainstorms the idea of hiring boys.
10. "The Cowboys" This man was from a famous acting family. Which actor played the role of one of the young cowhands?

Answer: Robert Carradine

"My name's Honeycutt. I'm fifteen, and everybody calls me Slim". Robert Carradine's best known for playing Lewis Slotnick in "Revenge of the Nerds". He also starred in another western with his brothers, David and Keith, called "The Long Riders" (a fictional account of the James Gang and the Dalton brothers). Slim is the oldest of the 'boys', and their leader.
11. "The Cowboys". The Duke has to hire a camp cook. Roscoe Lee Browne plays that character. What is the cook's name?

Answer: Jebediah Nightlinger

Mr. Nightlinger shows up at the Double O Ranch unannounced, and proclaims he's the camp cook. The Duke shoots back with, "Where's Anse Williams"? "He got drunk on Saturday, and married on Sunday. He won't be comin.", responds Mr. Nightlinger. "We'll I only like to work with a man I'm used to.", says Wil Andersen. Nightlinger replies, "You'll get used to me". Jebediah is hired, and ends up being invaluable to both The Duke and the 'boys'.

His character has many great lines throughout the film. The best may be; "Doesn't anything bigger want to work for you"? (after seeing nothing but boys working on the ranch).
12. "The Cowboys" Perhaps the best scene in the movie is that between The Duke and a 'boy' named Bob. Wayne's character helps "cure" Bob of what habit?

Answer: stuttering

Bob Wilson stutters. At one point Slim Honeycutt is drowning. Bob tries to alert Mr. Andersen, but can't get the words out (almost causing Slim to drown). Slim is saved, but Mr. Andersen turns on Bob. He tells him he's gonna stop that stuttering, or "get the bleep outta here". Bob mutters back; "Son of a 'bleep'". "What'd you say"?, responds Mr. Andersen. "You God 'bleeped son of a 'bleep'", replies Bob.

He makes Bob keep repeating those words til 'magically' he loses his stutter. Later on the 'boys' tell Bob, "Mr. Andersen sure scared you outta stutterin". Bob retorts, "I coulda stopped whenever I wanted". "Why didn't ya, then"? Bob says, "Cause I didn't know anyone wanted me to stop".
13. "The Cowboys" A phrase The Duke uses throughout the film, is?

Answer: "We're burnin' daylight."

"Slap some bacon on a biscuit! We're burnin' daylight"! (i.e get up and get working). A 'boy' named Weems tells Slim, "If I hear Mr. Andersen say 'We're burnin' daylight' one more time I'm gonna really give it to him". My Dad would say that, time and time, again when getting up to go hunting in the early morning hours. I really wanted to 'give it' to him too.
14. "The Cowboys" The Duke meets "The Almighty" at the end of this film. How does he die?

Answer: shot by cattle rustlers

Rustlers surround the herd, the 'boys', and Wil Andersen. The rustlers are led by Asa Watts (Bruce Dern). After Mr. Andersen beats up Asa Watts, Watts in a blind rage shoots Wil Andersen. Mr. Nightlinger and the 'boys' catch up to the rustlers. They kill all the rustlers in a sneak attack, reclaim the herd, and finish the drive to market.
15. *Combination Question* The Duke's characters die in both films. In which film is he buried during the movie?

Answer: The Cowboys

Gut shot, and near death Wil Andersen tells the 'boys' he's proud of them, and that every man wants his sons to be better men than their father. Mr. Nightlinger and the 'boys' give him a burial in the very spot he was killed. A thoughtful eulogy is given by Mr. Nightlinger at his grave, "This may seem like a lonesome place to leave him, but he is not alone.

The prairie is like a mother to Mr. Andersen. He belonged to her. She cared for him while he lived, and she nurses him while he sleeps".
