However, they are captured by Dr. Brine (John Malkovich), who is really a penguin-hating octopus named Dave. 2. Peter Guillam, a gay spy

Answer: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is a 2011 spy film based on the John le Carre novel also called "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley, a former spy who comes out of retirement to investigate claims of a mole within the CIA operations. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Peter Guillam, Smiley's assistant in his efforts. Peter is gay (which he not in the original novel) and this hampers his work as he subjected to blackmail from his enemies.
3. Julian Assange, Wikileaks founder

Answer: The Fifth Estate

"The Fifth Estate" is a 2013 film that tells the story of the controversial website WikiLeaks, which is infamous for leaking sensitive information about important people and things, and its founder Julian Assange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Daniel Bruhl plays Daniel Domscheit-Berg, WikiLeaks' spokesperson.

The film generated controversy for two reasons. Assange called the film anti-WikiLeaks propaganda and a smear campaign against the good work he and the website do. Critics of WikiLeaks countered that the film glorified and encouraged illegal behavior that could put lives at risk if sensitive information continued to be leaked.
4. Bill Bulger, President of the Massachusetts Senate and brother of a gangster

Answer: Black Mass

"Black Mass" is a 2015 biographical film about the life of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp). Whitey controls most of South Boston and has many connections including with several FBI agents. His brother, Bill, is the President of the Massachusetts State Senate and is played by Cumberbatch. Whitey becomes an FBI informant against the Anguilo Brothers, who control the parts of the city Whitey does not.
5. William Carey, brother-in-law to a famous queen

Answer: The Other Boleyn Girl

"The Other Boleyn Girl" is a 2008 film based on the life of Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson), sister of Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman). The film, which is based on a novel, is not very historically accurate. Mary is married to William Carey (Benedict Cumberbatch) but falls for King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) who at the time was still married to Catherine of Aragon (Ana Torrent). Meanwhile, Anne is having her own love affairs. Jim Sturgess plays George Boleyn, Mary and Anne's brother.
6. Alan Turing, mathematician and computer genius

Answer: The Imitation Game

"The Imitation Game" is a 2014 film based on the life of British computer scientist Alan Turing. Turing worked for the British government during World War II and worked to break the German Enigma codes. Keira Knightly plays Joan Clarke, a fellow cryptographer at Bletchley Park, where British code breaking efforts were headquartered. Turing's life is complicated by his homosexuality, which at the time could lead to imprisonment. Indeed, when his secret is discovered Turing becomes a disgraced figure rather than a British war hero.

Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2015 but lost to Eddie Redmayne for "The Theory of Everything".
7. Paul Marshall, a factory owner and assaulter

Answer: Atonement

In this 2007 film, Saorise Ronan, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave all star as Briony Tallis, playing her at different ages. As a teenager, Briony witnesses Paul Marshall (Benedict Cumberbatch) assault her cousin Lola (Juno Temple). However, she accuses Robbie (James McAvoy), her sister Cecilia's (Keira Knightly) boyfriend. Robbie is sent to prison.

As World War II looms, Briony begins to feel guilty and does so even more when she learns Paul is about to marry Lola.
8. Little Charles Aiken, whose cousin is in love with him

Answer: August: Osage County

"August: Osage County" is a 2013 film starring Meryl Streep as Violet Weston, a woman who has cancer and is suffering from a drug addiction. Violet's husband Beverly (Sam Shepard) dies in a boating accident and her family assembles for his funeral and to see her during her illness.

Some members had not seen each other for a long time and it soon becomes apparent that there are deep secrets among them. One of these secrets involves Cumberbatch's character Little Charles Aiken (styled Little because he is a junior) whose cousin, Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) is in love with him. Little Charles is shy and is constantly criticized by his mother Mattie Fae (Margo Martindale).
9. Smaug, a powerful dragon

Answer: "The Hobbit" series

Cumberbatch first voiced Smaug in the 2012 film "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and again in two sequels. In Middle Earth lore as written by J.R.R. Tolkien, Smaug is the main villain in "The Hobbit" series. He is a powerful dragon who took over the Dwarf Kingdom.

In the first film, Smaug does not have as big a role as he does in the second film. In addition to voicing Smaug, Cumberbatch also provided the voices for the characters of Sauron a.k.a. the Necromancer.
10. William Prince Ford, a plantation owner

Answer: 12 Years a Slave

In this 2013 film, Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Solomon Northup, a free African living in the Northern United States prior to the Civil War. Northup is tricked into traveling South and is eventually sold into slavery. Solomon is first purchased by William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch) who then sells him to a cruel plantation owner named Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). There, Solomon meets Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o) who is repeatedly raped and abused by Epps.

The film is based on the true memoirs of the real life Solomon Northup. His memoir details his life including his unsuccessful lawsuits against the slave traders who kidnapped him. Patsey was a real life person as well, but what happened to her is unknown.
