Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player, when asked why the Black Sox would throw the World Series, states, "You never played for Charlie Comiskey."?

Answer: Chick Gandil

Played by Michael Rooker, first baseman Arnold "Chick" Gandil is the ringleader for the plot to throw the World Series. He is seen saying this quote to Sport Sullivan at the beginning of the film.
2. Which character, when mentioning that he "won a few games," is told, "You lost a few more."?

Answer: Sleepy Bill Burns

"Sleepy" Bill Burns was a real pitcher from 1908 until 1912. He indeed lost a few more games than he won: 30 wins and 52 losses, to be exact. In the film, Burns (played by Christopher Lloyd) and his assistant Billy Maharg act as gofers between the players and Arnold Rothstein.
3. Who tells Eddie Cicotte, "Twenty-nine is not thirty, Eddie."?

Answer: Charles Comiskey

According to the film, Eddie Cicotte was apparently promised a bonus of $10,000 if he won 30 games. When he reaches 29 wins, Comiskey, a notorious cheapskate, orders him to sit down under the guise of resting up for the World Series. Cicotte claims that this cost him five starts, and he definitely would have won one of those five.
4. When sitting in a bar, who tells several fans, "I may be dumb, fellas, but I ain't stupid!"?

Answer: Happy Felsch

Although Joe Jackson could neither read nor write, he is not the one who says this quote. Felsch gives this statement to fans after Sleepy Bill Burns remarks to Billy Maharg, "Shoeless Joe is ignorant; Hap Felsch is just dumb!" earlier in the film. Felsch, played by Charlie Sheen in the film, was known for his fielding prowess before making some suspicious errors in the film, such as dropping several easy fly balls.
5. After being told he won't be allowed to start, the retort "Kid! I can't miss!" is offered by whom?

Answer: Eddie Cicotte

Manager Kid Gleason mentions that he wants to start a new pitcher named Roy Wilkinson, but Cicotte is able to convince Gleason with this four-word plea. At this point, the players had turned on the gamblers, since the gamblers hadn't come through, and Eddie Cicotte turned in his finest performance that day.
6. Who says the following quote in the movie: "I'm forever blowing ballgames, pretty ballgames in the air."?

Answer: Ring Lardner

Director John Sayles plays the role of the famed writer Ring Lardner, who by this time had become aware that the Black Sox were not trying their best. Terkel plays his colleague, Hugh "Hughie" Fullerton, who first broke the idea of a fix to the newspapers.
7. Who tells Ring Lardner, "Everybody's got their own way of letting off steam, Ring. It's what you do on the field that counts."?

Answer: Eddie Collins

Second baseman Eddie Collins, one of the "Clean Sox," still had a reputation as a malcontent among most of the Black Sox, both for his cockiness and his salary. Collins still went on to have a Hall of Fame career, amassing over 3,000 hits and a .333 batting average.

In the movie, however, his part is not as large. This quote is said before the Series, although his relationship with his teammates lead them to spite him in the film and in real life.
8. When on the witness stand, who testifies that the Black Sox were "the best I've ever seen"?

Answer: Kid Gleason

Kid Gleason, the manager, still defends his players to the death in an emotional testimony during the trial. Gleason, himself a former player, attempts to keep an even keel between Comiskey and the players, although he is mostly unsuccessful.
9. Who says to the lawyers, "A man worried about his job is bound to play favorites."?

Answer: Kenesaw Mountain Landis

This quote is made by Landis as his reasoning for a lifetime contract as Commissioner of Baseball. Landis went on to offer the famous edict, "Regardless of the verdict of juries... no player who throws a ball game... no player who undertakes, or promises to throw a game... no player who sits in conference with a bunch of crooked players and gamblers where the ways and means of throwing a ball game are discussed, and does not promptly tell his club about it... will ever play professional baseball again." Landis is portrayed as an autocratic ruler, and would serve as commissioner from 1920 until his death in 1944.
10. In the finale of the movie, when asked by a fan if an outlaw player is Shoeless Joe, who says, "Nah, those fellas are all gone now."?

Answer: Buck Weaver

The credits mention Weaver applied for reinstatement several times, but was always denied. As for Jackson, he played in outlaw leagues for several years, but never got over the stigma of being banned for life. According to legend, Ty Cobb once asked him later in his life, "Don't you remember me, Joe?" Jackson responded, "Sure, I remember you, Ty. I just didn't think anybody wanted to remember me."
