"Eyes Wide Shut" - A Kubrick Masterpiece Quiz

Bill Harford is a fairly wealthy doctor, as evident by how much cash he drops during the film. We see him treating patients periodically, beginning with the mysterious Mandy at Ziegler's party. Apparently, when Kubrick first decided to make the film a decade earlier, he liked the idea of casting Steve Martin in the Dr. Harford role.

But after that decade, when the project had developed further, he went with the power couple of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as the Harfords.

The man introduces himself by saying, "My name is Sandor Szavost. I am Hungarian," to which Alice Harford replies that she is American. She agrees to dance with him, during which they discuss the nature of marriage. Szavost is very interested in Alice from the beginning, but she shoots down his numerous advances. He was played by German actor Sky du Mont, who was born in Buenos Aires.

Answer: Rainbow Fashions

The owner of Rainbow Fashions is Mr. Milich. He was played by Croatian actor Rade Serbedzija. The name of the shop is symbolic as earlier we hear a woman at Ziegler's party talking to Bill about "where the rainbow ends".

Answer: A prostitute Bill meets on the street

Domino is a friendly prostitute who Bill encounters while walking the streets. He originally accepts her offer, but then changes his mind and leaves. She was played by American actress and model Vinessa Shaw, who comes from a family of actresses.

Answer: Fidelio

"Fidelio" was the only opera written by Ludwig Van Beethoven. It is about a woman who dresses as a man in order to work at the prison where her husband is unjustly imprisoned, in hopes of freeing him. This password fits in the film's story as Dr. Harford disguises himself in order to get into a place where he does not belong. While there, he tries to rescue a mysterious masked woman.

Answer: An owl

The man's mask is that of an owl, which is significant as the owl represents the pagan god Moloch. Followers of Moloch would construct a giant statue in his image and commit human sacrifices in his name. The man's mask connects the rituals that we see at the masked party with something pagan in origin.

Answer: Victor Ziegler

Near the end of the film, Victor Ziegler admits that he was also at the masked party, and that he had Bill followed afterwards. Ziegler was played by American actor and director Sydney Pollack, who passed away in 2008.

Answer: The waitress working at Gillespie's Cafe

While looking for Nick, Bill enters Gillespie's Cafe, which is next to the Sonata Cafe, where Nick plays piano at night. He lies to the waitress about some medical test results, thus convincing the waitress to tell him which hotel Nick is staying at. The waitress was played by Carmela Marner, who had worked with Tom Cruise previously in the film "Mission: Impossible".

Answer: A mask

Once Bill sees the mask, he breaks down crying and confesses to his wife Alice everything that has happened. It is never explained how the mask got on the pillow, but there are two prominent theories. One is that Alice found it and placed it there to talk to him about it, another is that the mysterious people from the masked party placed it there as a warning.

The masks used in the film were Athenian, but altered slightly by Kubrick himself.

Answer: Alice Harford

This line is said by Alice Harford in the toy store as she and Bill discuss what to do after Bill's confession. Although their marriage has been shaken, they do state their love and commitment to one another. Alice's line seems related to the title of the 1926 Austrian novella "Traumnovelle" which translates to "Dream Story". This is the novella that inspired "Eyes Wide Shut".
