Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2002) Velma killed her sister and her husband, Roxie killed her boyfriend, and Billy's going to see that neither of them has to pay in this enjoyable musical based on a Bob Fosse play.

Answer: Chicago

Rob Marshall directed this thoroughly enjoyable movie starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and John C. Reilly. Bob Fosse's influence is unmistakable. Zeta-Jones received an Oscar for her performance.
2. (1985) A young Amish boy sees a murder in the washroom of a train station. Harrison Ford plays the detective who is delighted to have a witness until he realizes what they've stumbled upon, and then all he cares about is keeping the boy safe. But along the way he gets himself shot and has to hide out in the Amish community until he heals. The clash between the two cultures is delightful, but suspenseful enough when the bad guys finally track them down.

Answer: Witness

Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, Danny Glover, Josef Sommer and Jan Rubes also star under Peter Weir's direction.
3. (1995) She's a token collector for the Chicago Transit Authority who falls in love with the handsome stranger who comes through her booth every day. He gets mugged, she saves his life and through a misunderstanding becomes identified as his fiance while he lies in a coma. Things get really complicated when she discovers that she's really in love with his brother.

Answer: While You Were Sleeping

John Turtletaub directed this very cute movie starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher and Peter Boyle, to name a few.
4. (2002)It's good to be back at school, even though some annoying little house Elf has done his best to keep you from going. But there's some mysterious monster attacking students (and Mrs. Norris and Nearly Headless Nick), and everyone thinks you're controlling it because you can talk to snakes.

Answer: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Chris Colombus directs this delightful second in the series that just seems to get better and better. An all-star cast supports Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as the leading characters. Sadly we lost Richard Harris in 2002, and won't have his talents for the rest of the movies.
5. (1958) James Stewart plays an ex-cop hired by a friend to watch the bizarre behaviour of his wife, in this movie by Hitchcock. Stewart finds himself falling in love with the mysterious lady, and is so devastated when she kills herself in front of him...or does she? He's very confused to find a another young lady who is so much like the dead woman that he begins to doubt what he thought he saw.

Answer: Vertigo

Kim Novak plays the mysterious lady and Barbara Bel Geddes (of "Dallas" fame) plays Stewart's friend and would be lover.
6. (1990) This is a classic Cinderella story, except that she's a hooker and he's a multi-millionaire who's made his fortune on other people's misfortune. She teaches him to be more human, he takes her off the street and everybody's happy, except for his lawyer.

Answer: Pretty Woman

Garry Marshall directed this movie while Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and Hector Elizondo starred. I remember being dragged to this movie and then being surprised at just how much I really did enjoy it.
7. (1991) Jeff Bridges was a radio talk show star, until some chance remark he made caused someone to open fire in a nightclub, killing several people. Racked with guilt, he disappears into a bottle where he meets Robin Williams, a man who's life was ruined when his wife was killed in that nightclub. Bridges thinks he can ease his guilt by giving Williams money, but it turns out to be not quite that easy.

Answer: The Fisher King

Terry Gilliam directed this incredibly powerful movie that also starred Amanda Plummer and Mercedes Ruehl. I'd highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't yet seen it.
8. (1990) Sam loves Molly and Molly loves Sam, until someone shoots and kills Sam while stealing his wallet one night. But Sam isn't ready to go, especially after he discovers that his best friend was responsible for his killing and his beloved Molly is now in danger.

Answer: Ghost

Jerry Zucker directed Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore as Sam and Molly, while Whoopi Goldberg is hysterical as a fraudulent 'medium' who is stunned to find that she really can hear Sam and is drawn into his plot to save Molly.
9. (1993) When his wife dies he moves his son across the country and tries, not very successfully, to rebuild their lives. His son phones in to a radio help show and the next thing he knows letters are pouring in from all over the country. None of them seem very promising, except one, and the boy makes arrangements to meet her on top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day.

Answer: Sleepless in Seattle

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have made a few movies together, but this is my favourite. Nora Ephron directed and Bill Pullman and Rosie O'Donnell have small parts. Ross Malinger is very good as the young son.
10. (1994) Believing himself to be responsible for the death of his father, a young lion flees, finding refuge with a meercat and warthog. This leaves his evil uncle to rule the pride and lay waste to their land, until he is convinced to come back and claim what is rightfully his.

11. (1992) Jack Ryan is a former CIA agent who just can't sit back and watch an assassination attempt without helping out. Unfortunately the brother of the terrorist he killed wants revenge, and things are never the same again for the Ryan family.

Answer: Patriot Games

Phillip Noyce directed and Harrison Ford, Anne Archer and Sean Bean starred. This is definitely the best of all the Jack Ryan movies, in my humble opinion.
12. (2000) An FBI agent has to go undercover in the Miss United States pageant to protect the contestants from bomb threats. But the only available agent is anything but willing, and a massive makeover has got to happen first. Michael Caine is very funny as the consultant who has the thankless job of getting her ready to compete.

Donald Petrie directed this very funny movie also starring Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen, Ernie Hudson, and William Shatner.
13. (1990) Rusty is the District Attorney's right hand man, so when one of the D.A.'s staff is murdered, Rusty is assigned to investigate the case. But the evidence starts to pour in and it begins to look like Rusty killed his former lover, or did he?

Answer: Presumed Innocent

Alan J. Pakula directed this movie based on a novel by Scott Turow. Harrison Ford, Brian Dennehy, Raul Julia, Bonnie Bedelia and Greta Scacchi star. If you've noticed a lot of Harrison Ford movies in my collection, then you've been paying attention!
14. (1984) JoBeth Williams plays a frustrated housewife who, after suffering a head injury, believes she is a character from her favourite detective series. She runs around Paris dragging other people into her little fantasy, and somehow manages to uncover a real intrigue. Tom Conti plays the man who writes the books, who she believes is also a character from the stories, and is one of the people she drags into her adventure.

Answer: American Dreamer

Rick Rosenthal directed this really funny movie that also stars Giancarlo Giannini. Anyone I've shown this movie to really loves it, but hardly anyone I've spoken to about it has seen it, or even heard about it. I hope there are people out in Quizzyland that have seen it. If you have, please let me know.
15. (1993) He started out by using them as cheap labour in his factories, but when he saw the way they were persecuted during the war, he dedicated his life to saving as many Jews as he could. This incredibly powerful movie by Spielberg shows us just how much difference one righteous man can make.

Answer: Schindler's List

Liam Neeson stars as Schindler, with Ben Kingsley
as his right-hand-man. This is not a movie I can watch over and over again, it's just too devastating. But it's a movie that I keep because one day, when they're a bit older, my children have to see it.
