Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2002) Stu Shepard is a New York City publicist who isn't a very nice man. He's not a really horrible man either, but he is a lying, shameless, user of people, who's trying very hard to cheat on his wife. The only way he's going to get out of this alive, is to come clean about his sins, in a very public manner.

Answer: Phone Booth

Joel Schumacher directed this low budget movie starring Colin Farrell and the voice of Kiefer Sutherland (although he does appear on screen very briefly). Screenwriter Larry Cohen first pitched the idea of filming a movie entirely in a phone booth to Alfred Hitchcock, who liked the idea very much. Unfortunately they could not come up with a plot device that would keep the main character trapped in a phone booth. Once Cohen thought to use a sniper, he was able to write the script in about one month.
2. (2001) Over the years there have been many movies done about the Whitechapel Murders. This version stars Johnny Depp as Inspector Abberline, an opium addicted, clairvoyant police officer whose psychic abilities help him solve the Ripper mystery.

Answer: From Hell

The Hughes brothers directed this movie, which also starred Heather Graham, Ian Holm and Robbie Coltrane. The title was taken from an actual letter that police received from an unknown person, who claimed to be Jack the Ripper. Where the return address should have been, the words 'From Hell' were written instead.
3. (1993) Darby Shaw is a law student who writes a brief about the killing of two Supreme Court Justices. The brief manages to fall into the wrong hands and Darby finds that her life is threatened, in this movie based on a John Grisham novel.

Answer: The Pelican Brief

Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington star, under Alan J. Pakula's direction. Grisham sold the movie rights before the book was even written, on the strength of a sample he wrote. He did write the part of Darby Shaw with Julia Roberts in mind.
4. (1995) This movie is based on the real story of Sister Helen Prejean, who became involved as the spiritual consultant for a convicted killer awaiting execution. She found herself torn between compassion for both the killer, played by Sean Penn, and for the families of his victims, as she worked, unsuccessfully, towards getting him a stay of execution.

Answer: Dead Man Walking

Tim Robbins directed this film which garnered a Best Actress Oscar for Susan Sarandon, and nominations for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Music. The real Sister Prejean can be seen outside the prison during the candle light vigil.
5. (1998) Robin is on a romantic holiday with her boyfriend, but she has to make a small side trip to a neighbouring island, to cover a story for the magazine that she works at. Unfortunately the only plane she can find to hire comes with pilot Quinn Harris, a heavy drinker who she immediately despises. When the plane crashes on an uninhabited island, they witness modern day pirates murder the inhabitants of a yacht, and suddenly find themselves in a race to stay alive.

Answer: Six Days, Seven Nights

Harrison Ford and Anne Heche star under Ivan Reitman's direction. In the movie Quinn flies a De Havilland Beaver aircraft, which happens to be the kind of plane that Ford owns. Ford won the 'Blockbuster Entertainment Award' for Favourite Actor for this movie.
6. (1994) It seems that when you reach a certain age, your weekends are spent attending weddings. Such is the case for Charles, played by Hugh Grant, and his closest group of friends. It's hard when it seems that everyone except you is getting married. You might even begin to wonder if you'll ever find true love, especially when the girl you thought might be 'the one' marries someone else.

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

Mike Newell directed this very funny movie, which also starred Simon Callow and Andie MacDowell. The movie had such a small budget, that the extras playing wedding guests were asked to provide their own clothes.
7. (1990) Seeking his own death, Lt. John Dunbar accidentally becomes a hero, when he leads his Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. Allowed to choose where his next posting will be, he receives a transfer to a remote outpost, which he soon finds is deserted. At first he fights his loneliness by befriending a wolf, but soon he becomes involved with the local natives, learning to respect them and earning their respect in turn. When more soldiers arrive at the fort, his friendship with the natives is frowned upon, and he must choose which life he would rather live.

Answer: Dances With Wolves

Kevin Costner both directed and starred in this movie, which also starred Mary McDonnell and Graham Greene. There were actually two wolves used in filming, one of which had to have the white socks painted on. Because so much of the movie was shot outdoors, it was filmed in sequence, so that there would be continuity with the changing of the seasons.

The only scenes shot out of order were the battle scenes at the very beginning.
8. (1972) It's Berlin in the 1930's, and Sally Bowles, played by Liza Minnelli, is a cabaret singer in the Kit-Kat club, where just about anything goes. She becomes romantically involved with two men, while all around her the Nazis are rising to power, and whipping anti-semitism to a frenzy. Joel Grey was amazing as the Master of Ceremonies at the club.

Answer: Cabaret

Bob Fosse directed this powerful movie which won 8 Academy Awards including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director, but not Best Picture. There is an incredibly powerful scene where a beautiful young man sings 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me' in a pure and moving voice. You find yourself swept up in the sentiment, until the camera pans to his sleeve and you see that he's a member of the 'Hitler Youth'. Sadly, Neo-Nazi groups have adopted this song, and it has since been covered by a skinhead band called 'Screwdriver'.
9. (1985) Unhappy at home with his dysfunctional family, and unappreciated at school, Marty spends a lot of time with his friend, the eccentric Doc Brown. But when he accidently gets sent back in time, he manages to stop his parents from meeting. If he doesn't find a way to get the two of them to meet, and fall in love, he may just find that he never gets born.

Answer: Back to the Future

Robert Zemeckis directed this very funny movie, starring Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd and Crispin Glover. Sorry, but I did not find the two sequels to be nearly as good. There is no 'Back to the Future Part IV', and I don't believe there are any plans to create one.

The time travel machine was originally going to be a refrigerator, but Zemeckis and Spielberg were afraid that it might encourage kids to crawl in and out of fridges, so it was changed.
10. (1996) The Looney Toons are in trouble. They have to win a basketball game against the alien Nerdlucks, or be enslaved in an alien amusement park. But the Nerdlucks have stolen the talents of some of the best basketball players around, and have put together a truly amazing team. In desperation, Bug Bunny turns to Michael Jordan for help, and he agrees to play with them.

Answer: Space Jam

The gym where the Looney Tunes team practices is named the 'Leon Schlesinger Gym' in honour of the man who created the first Looney Toon/Merrie Melodies. Warner Brothers was in negotiations with Noel Blanc, son of Mel Blanc, to do the voices for all the male animated characters.

However an agreement couldn't be reached, so instead Warner Brothers hired four different men to replace Noel. (Mel was the original voice of a lot of the Looney Toon characters.)
11. (2002) Hugh Grant plays Will, a rich, manipulative, immature, young man who is not above pretending to be a single parent, so that he can score big with single moms. Then he meets Marcus, a 12-year-old boy, whose wisdom far outstrips his years, and is the only one able to finally teach Will the importance of growing up.

Answer: About a Boy

Chris and Paul Weitz directed this movie, starring Toni Collette, Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Weisz. George Clooney turned down the role, as did Brad Pitt. According to IMDb, "Pitt said it wouldn't be believable that someone as attractive as him would need to pretend to be a single dad to meet women."
12. (2001) Mia is an awkward teenager, whose biggest concern is getting her first kiss. So imagine how shocked she is to find that she's actually a Princess, and the sole heir to the throne of a small European country. Julie Andrews plays the loving, but implacable grandmother who must convince her reluctant grandaughter to assume her new duties, while effecting a 'Pygmalion' type transformation on the overwhelmed young lady.

Answer: The Princess Diaries

Garry Marshall directed this delightful family movie that also starred Anne Hathaway, Hector Elizondo, and Mandy Moore. Quite a few of the cast were also in 'Pretty Woman', another Garry Marshall film. The movie was shot on the same stage where 'Mary Poppins' was shot, a stage that is now named after Julie Andrews.
13. (1997) Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Kate Winslet, are from two very different worlds, and yet they manage to meet and fall in love. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of time allotted for this ill-fated love, as the ship that they meet on is doomed.

Answer: Titanic

James Cameron directed this epic movie that also starred Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton and Victor Garber, who went to my high school but before my time. It was a powerful movie, but I have to admit that I got very tired of hearing Winslet crying 'Jack, Jack' all the time. The underwater shots of the real Titanic wreckage were filmed by the crew, using a new camera designed by Cameron's brother Mike and Panavision. All previous filming of the Titanic had been done from within the submersibles, because no existing cameras could withstand the pressure at those depths.

This new camera could.
14. (1995) Grace Bichon, played by Julia Roberts, thinks she's happily married, until she finds out her husband Eddie, played by Dennis Quaid, is having an affair. After confronting him, in the middle of the road, she moves in with her sister to regroup. Once there, she begins to question the authority of anyone and everyone, especially her father. This creates a bit of an upheaval in her parents' marriage too.

Answer: Something to Talk About

Lasse Hallstrom directed this movie which was originally going to be called 'Grace Under Fire', but was changed because of the television show of the same name. It ended up being named after the Bonnie Raitt song, 'Something to Talk About'.
15. (2000) Russell Duritz is an image consultant. He's good at what he does, but is despised by most of the people who need him because of his cold, and sometimes nasty manner. When Rusty, the 8-year-old version of himself, somehow magically shows up at his house, he is given a second chance to revisit his childhood, and that key moment in his past that defined who he became.

Answer: The Kid

Jon Turteltaub directed this wonderful Disney movie that starred Bruce Willis, Spencer Breslin, Emily Mortimer and Lily Tomlin. Breslin won the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film, an award he most decidedly deserved.
