Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A snow globe.

Answer: Ĉitizen Kane (1940)

Regarded as Orson Welles' masterpiece, this film is always in contention as one of the finest films of all time. As Kane lies dying at Xanadu, his mansion, he looks at a snow globe winter scene and whispers "Rosebud", recalling happier times with his sled.
2. Price check on Le Sueur peas.

Answer: Guarding Tess (1994 )

Shirley MacLaine plays Tess, a widow of a former president, who is entitled to Secret Service protection. Much to the frustration of chief agent Nicolas Cage, she often treats them as servants, such as making them check prices at the supermarket. MacLaine got a Golden Globe nomination in spite of mixed reviews.
3. "I don't have to show you any stinking badges."

Answer: The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948)

Double dealing is rampant when three untrustworthy miners find a treasure in gold. Late in the film Humphrey Bogart asks a foolish question and gets this obvious answer from a Mexican bandit.
4. "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."

Answer: Sunset Boulevard

Gloria Swanson, as Nora Desmond, a faded movie star, delivers this line as police investigate the dead body in the swimming pool. She lives in a fantasy world of dementia and pictures herself still in her former glory. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
5. "I could have been a contender."

Answer: On the Waterfront (1954)

Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is a dockworker caught up in schemes of his brother Charley (Rod Steiger), right-hand man in the longshoreman's union, an organization fraught with corruption. Terry mourns his days as a boxer which came to a conclusion when the mob forced him to throw a fight.
6. Zither music.

Answer: The Third Man (1949)

The zither is a string instrument played in a box-like casing strummed like a guitar. The title music "The Third Man Theme" topped the international music charts in 1950. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) goes to Europe to contact his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and suspense and plot twists ensue with the background of the eerie zither music.
7. Hitchhiker secures a ride by displaying a shapely leg.

Answer: It Happened One Night (1934)

"It Happened One Night" was released just before the Hayes Office came in with its censorship provisions and captured all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay). When Clark Gable was unable to stop a car with his trusty hitchhiking thumb, Claudette Colbert hoists her skirt and gets an immediate ride.
8. A mysterious doctor uses a sleepwalker as a murder weapon.

Answer: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Students of film can not be unaware of this eerie film that features weird camera angles and unusual settings. It is considered this masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema. An insane hypnotist (Werner Krauss) uses a somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders.
9. Sunny D

Answer: Juno (2007)

Ellen Page stars as Juno, an independent-minded teenager confronting an unplanned pregnancy. She explores her options from abortion to adoption. She is often seen with her favorite drink Sunny D. Sunny D has been described as a fake food. At one time it contained 2% juice and the main ingredient was high fructose corn syrup but it has been reformulated many times. Sunny D had a surge in popularity when this film was released.
10. Suicide is Painless

Answer: M.A.S.H. (1970)

"Suicide is Painless" is the theme song of the film "M.A.S.H." (197O) and all 256 episodes of the subsequent television series, but few know the correct title. When my teenage son joined a local drum and bugle corps, I asked on what he was working and he said "Suicide is Painless".

A little shocked, I found out later that it was from the movie and was also popular with high school and college bands.
