Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1988) I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati.

Answer: Rain Man

Dustin Hoffman collected an Oscar for his performance as an autistic savant. The film was also named Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Tom Cruise, in a change of pace, was the prefect straight man for Hoffman as they share a road trip with Raymond (Rain Man) showing surprising abilities.
2. (1940) A hobo votes 37 times.

Answer: The Great McGinty

A down-and-out hobo votes 37 times for two dollars a piece. Brian Donlevy stars as the man who rose to governor until his bubble bursts in this political satire.
3. (1944) A detective falls in love with a dead woman.

Answer: Laura

Dana Andrews is a police detective investigating the death of Laura through his interviews with the people who knew her and her portrait. His investigation becomes an obsession so much that he sleeps in her apartment under her portrait.
4. (1982) Used 300,000 extras for funeral scene.

Answer: Gandhi

Director Richard Attenborough spared no expense in portraying the massive funeral of Mahatma Gandhi. Guinness Book of Records calculated that over 300,000 were used. It was the most honored film of 1982.
5. (2009) Mike Tyson owns a tiger.

Answer: The Hangover

As an aftermath of a wild bachelor party in Las Vegas, the "hangovers" must return a tiger that they captured from boxer Mike Tyson. This was a generally well received comedy that relied heavily on 'gross out' humor, not everyone's cup of tea.
6. (2000) A volleyball called Wilson.

Answer: Cast Away

Tom Hanks as a FedEx employee finds himself on a deserted island. To alleviate the loneliness, he personifies a volleyball as his friend. He calls him Wilson because that is the name printed on the ball.
7. (1915) Ku Klux Klan

Answer: The Birth of a Nation

"The Birth of a Nation" was originally titled "The Clansmen". It is considered one of the classic American silent films. D. W. Griffith, an innovator in the early days of film, directed this three hour film portraying two families during the American Civil War.

Unfortunately, it gave a negative and stereotyped portrait of black Americans and elevated the Ku Klux Klan to Robin Hood status, resulting in protests during its time. D. W. Griffith later directed "Intolerance" (1916) that urged tolerance among social groups, perhaps in an apology to the protests.
8. (1955) A one-armed veteran faces deception and hostility.

Answer: Bad Day at Black Rock

Spencer Tracy is in Black Rock to deliver a posthumous medal to the father of a soldier who died in combat. But the town has a shameful secret that they defend with hostility and subterfuge.
9. (1954) Who ate the strawberries?

Answer: The Caine Mutiny

Humphrey Bogart gives one of his best performances as the troubled Captain Phillip Francis Queeg. We see his incompetence that leads to the mutiny. In one incidence, Queeg wants a second helping of strawberries but finds the strawberries are gone so he disrupts the work of the ship in a futile search for the strawberries or the thief. José Ferrer explains at the end that the stewards ate the strawberries.
10. (1980) "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!"

Answer: Airplane!

The first review I heard of the film was on a radio talk show. The reviewer had no pre-knowledge of the film and took it seriously for the first ten minutes only to realize it was a brilliant comedy packed with satire, puns, and a good measure of slapstick. Lloyd Bridges spoke this line as air traffic controller, he is overcome by the packed airplane with no pilot. Surely the plane must be saved, but don't call me Shirley.
