An unusual choice in modern times, the filmmakers chose to shoot 2011's Best Picture winner, "The Artist" in black and white. The film told the story of the silent film era during its transition into talkies, and how this change affected a big star of the silent era as he developed a relationship with a younger up and coming ingenue. In truth, the film was actually filmed in color, but then converted to black and white for theatrical showings. Some films that are intended to be shown in black and white, are filmed in color to allow for the option of returning it to color, but the other reason for filming in color is that it allows for more control as to mapping the colors to black and white. Mark Bridges, who won the Best Costume Design for "The Artist" said that the film was originally shot in color "because there was a chance that in some markets it would be shown in colour."

Riggan then makes a play for aesthetic respectability by reviving his acting career by writing, directing and starring in a play for Broadway. When the Award for Best Film came up at the Academy award ceremony, an awkward moment came up as actor Sean Penn announced the winner saying, "And the Oscar goes to... Who gave this son of a bitch his green card? 'Birdman'!" Penn was referring to director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is from Mexico, but many found the comment offensive. Iñárritu said he took it as a joke, since he has been friends with Penn ever since they worked together in 2003 on the film "21 Grams".
