Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1995 movie "Jumanji" starred which actor in the lead role of the adult Alan Parrish?

Answer: Robin Williams

Robin Williams originally turned down the role because he didn't like the script, but after several re-writes, he agreed to the role. There was also some initial trepidation on behalf of the film-makers that Williams, well known for his improvisation, would not stick to the script, but he agreed to play the role exactly as written.

The director originally wanted Tom Hanks to play the role of Alan Parrish, followed by Bruce Willis, who was unavailable.
2. The Parrish family were owners of what type of business?

Answer: Shoe factory

The movie opened to a scene of a young Alan Parrish being chased by bullies. After he made it safely to the family business and took refuge inside, it was revealed to be a shoe factory run by his father.

The "Olde Woolen Mill" in North Berwick, Maine, was used for the exterior scenes of the factory and had "Parrish Shoe Company" painted on the outside. The sign "Four generations of quality" seen above the portico in the movie has since been removed.

Some of the movie's street scenes were filmed in Keene, New Hampshire and an advertisement for "Parrish Shoes" was painted on a wall on the corner of West and Main Streets. Seen in the movie after Alan returned from the jungle, the image was retained by the local council, and flowers and tributes were laid there after Williams' death in 2014.
3. After being conjured from the game, a troop of furry monkeys rampaged throughout Brantford. Of the following choices, what did we *NOT* see the monkeys do during the movie?

Answer: Set off fireworks

Judy's first roll of the dice unleashed the monkeys who began trashing the kitchen. They ate food, threw knives, broke dishes, swang from the light fitting and one almost set itself alight when it sat on the gas stove and turned it on. They then left the house and ran into the town centre, except for one monkey that was found later trapped in the fridge.

The monkeys got into a police car and fired a rifle before stealing the cruiser. In town they watched the flying monkeys from "The Wizard of Oz" which was being shown on a TV screen in a shop window.

The troop ran inside the store, caused havoc and made off with stolen loot. Later, Sarah, Judy and Peter saw three monkeys riding a police motorcycle.
4. When a stampede thundered through the house, the last animal in the group stole the game and made off with it. Which animal was then chased by the players?

Answer: Pelican

Judy's second roll released a stampede of rhinos, elephants, zebras and pelicans. The animals ran through the house then crashed through a side wall where they escaped into the town. The last animal in the stampede was a pelican, which scooped up the game and flew off with it. Alan, Sarah, Judy and Peter gave chase after Alan correctly surmised that it would head for water.

When the stampede ran through the town, a smaller, slower rhino was at the back of the pack. This was actually an error in the animation timing which had the effect of making the rhino appear slower than the rest of the stampede. The editors liked the effect and kept the error in, adding the foot stomping and wheezing later.
5. Jonathon Hyde played the role of the hunter, Van Pelt and which other role in "Jumanji"?

Answer: Sam Parrish

Jonathon Hyde, who played Bruce Ismay in "Titanic" (1997), played the hunter, Van Pelt, and also Sam Parrish, father of Alan in "Jumanji" (1995). On Alan's first roll after his release from the jungle, Van Pelt emerged from the game by the riddle: "A hunter from the darkest wild, makes you feel just like a child".

The young Alan Parrish was afraid of his father and after he was transported into the Jumanji jungle, that fear transposed onto Van Pelt. The feeling was cemented for the viewer by the use of the same actor in both roles. On his return, Alan came to the realisation that his fear was unfounded. At the end of the game when everything was restored back to 1969, Sam told Alan they'd have a talk about boarding school "man to man", but Alan corrected him with "father to son".
6. Peter tried to get the dice to land on the numbers he needed to finish the game. Apart from his token returning to the start for cheating, what happened to him as a result?

Answer: He turned into a monkey.

When Peter realised he only needed a ten to win the game, he tried to drop the dice so they would land on 12. The riddle "A law of 'Jumanji' has been broken, you will step back even more than your token" appeared and Peter was transformed into a replica of his playing piece, which was a monkey.

For 70 days during the filming, Bradley Pierce, who voiced Chip in "Beauty and the Beast" (1991), endured almost four hours in the make-up chair to transform himself into a furry monkey.
7. When a monsoon filled the house with water, Alan wrestled which dangerous animal in order to save Sarah and the children?

Answer: Crocodile

On Sarah's roll a monsoon erupted in the house, filling it with water. Despite the stampede that created an elephant-sized hole in a wall earlier, the entire ground floor of the house flooded. The ground floor had turned into a jungle by this time so it is thought that the abundant vines blocked off the cavity. As the water level rose, Alan helped Judy and Peter onto a large chandelier. Sarah attempted to follow, but was threatened by a large crocodile so Alan jumped on its back and wrestled with it.

While most of the animals in Jumanji were created by CGI, for the wrestling scenes with the crocodile, a mechanical replica was built so that Williams could ride it rodeo-style. In a behind the scenes clip where Williams was practicing on the mechanical monster, he can be heard taunting it, saying "your Mum's a wallet, your Daddy's a suitcase".
8. Policeman Carl Bentley had a terrible time with his squad car during the movie. What was the last thing that happened to it?

Answer: Bent in half and dragged away by a yellow vine pod

Following his return from the jungle, Alan was on his way to the factory in search of his father when Bentley almost ran into him with his squad car, so Alan jumped onto the bonnet, denting it. Bentley got out to confront him, giving the monkeys the opportunity to sneak in and steal the car. Bentley found it later, crashed into a tree. Alan ran by, chased by Van Pelt who shot at Alan but missed, hitting the police car instead. Bentley and Alan met again later when Bentley arrested Alan, released him and was then handcuffed to the door by Alan, who threw away the keys. Upon hearing a radio dispatch about a hostage situation involving a man with a gun and a woman with two children, Alan squeezed into the car with Bentley and drove to the department store. On arrival, the brakes failed causing the car to crash into the store. Alan ran off in search of Sarah leaving Bentley to pry off the door and find a hacksaw with which to free the handcuffs.

When he reversed out of the store, the bonnet fell off the car. Judy and Peter's Aunt flagged him down later and while Bentley's car was parked on the side of the road, a tentacle from a yellow pod wrapped itself around the car, folded it in two and dragged it into the forest. Bentley, at the end of his tether, yelled "Fine! Take it!"
9. When Alan's playing piece landed on the final space, what did he say?

Answer: Jumanji

Alan was about to have his final throw when he was cornered by Van Pelt. He orders Alan to drop whatever he was hiding in his hand, which was the dice. Needing only a score of three to win the game, Alan opened his hand and dropped the dice.

As Alan's token moved onto the final space of the game, Van Pelt aimed his weapon and asked: "Any last words?". According to the rules of the game, once your token reaches the end, you must speak the name of the game, so Alan replied, "Jumanji". Everything that emerged from the game then reversed and time returned to 1969.
10. At the conclusion of the game, Alan and Sarah get rid of it. How did they do this?

Answer: Threw it into a river

After the game was completed and Alan had made peace with his father, Alan and Sarah got rid of the game in the hope it would never be found again. They tied it with rope and weighed it down with bricks before tossing it off a bridge into the river below. The final scene of the movie shows the game half buried in sand on a beach. The drums sound as two girls walk along the beach toward it.
