Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.' -- 1989

Answer: Field of Dreams

Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) hears a voice telling him, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, and the ghosts of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the seven other Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series (known as the Chicago *Black* Sox) appear. "Field of Dreams" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1990 Academy Awards but lost to "Driving Miss Daisy."
SPOILER ALERT: He later realizes the "he" in the message refers to his dead father.
2. 'We who are about to die salute you.' -- 2000

Answer: Gladiator

"Gladiator" won Best Picture in the 2001 Academy Awards. Russell Crowe won Best Actor in a Leading Role for playing a betrayed Roman general who comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge.
3. 'Here's lookin' at you, kid.' -- 1942 (Hint: Humphrey Bogart is in this movie.)

Answer: Casablanca

In this almost final scene in the movie, Rick Blaine (played by Humphrey Bogart), owner of Rick's Cafe Americain nightclub in Casablanca, is talking to Ilsa Laszlo (played by Ingrid Bergman). She is reluctant to take an airplane out of Casablanca to join her husband Victor (played by Paul Henreid) and instead is wavering about staying in Casablanca with Rick.

He gives her the advice, "If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." When she asks, "But what about us?" Rick answers, "We'll always have Paris," and then adds this quote. "Casablanca" won three Oscars in the 1944 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Humphrey Bogart was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Rick Blaine but didn't win.
4. 'That's not a knife. *That's* a knife.' -- 1986

Answer: Crocodile Dundee

On a visit from Australia to New York City, Crocodile Dundee (played by Paul Hogan) and his lady friend (played by Linda Kozlowski) are confronted by a mugger. She whispers, "He has a knife." Crocodile Dundee pulls out a humongous Bowie knife. "That's not a knife. *That's* a knife." The mugger beats a hasty retreat.
5. 'Show me the money.' -- 1996

Answer: Jerry Maguire

'Jerry Maguire' was nominated for Best Picture in the 1997 Academy Awards but was beaten out by 'The English Patient.'
6. 'The trouble with Scotland is that it's full of Scots.' -- 1995

Answer: Braveheart

"Braveheart" won Best Picture in the 1996 Academy Awards and Mel Gibson won an Oscar for Best Director. This is the mostly true story of William Wallace, a commoner (one source says he was a Scottish lord) who unites 13th-century Scotland in its battle to overthrow English rule (although documentation about the details is sketchy, at best).
7. 'I'm gonna let ya' in on a little secret, Ray. K-Mart sucks.' -- 1988

Answer: Rain Man

Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor in a Leading Role in the 1989 Academy Awards for his portrayal of Raymond Babbitt, an autistic young man who is blessed with a phenomenal memory. Tom Cruise plays his selfish yuppie brother Charlie Babbitt. The scenes of the two of them counting cards while playing blackjack in Las Vegas are just wonderful. "Rain Man" won Best Picture in the 1989 Academy Awards.
8. 'Yeah, well... I also cook.' -- 1992 (Hint: This is said by a former Navy SEAL.)

Answer: Under Siege

Interesting trivia: Both the character Jordan Tate and the actress who played her (Erika Eleniak) were the Playboy Playmate of July 1989. "Under Siege" was set on the battleship USS Missouri, which is the ship on which the Japanese signed the surrender treaty in Tokyo Bay to end World War II (although it was actually filmed on the USS Alabama).

The USS Missouri has been refurbished and is on permanent public display in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The USS Alabama is on display in Mobile, Alabama, where the movie was filmed.
9. "I'm the king of the world!" --- 1997 (Hint: Leonardo DiCaprio says this quote.)

Answer: Titanic

In the events leading up to this quote, Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and his friend Fabrizio De Rossi (played by Danny Nucci) have won tickets in a poker game for the RMS Titanic's maiden voyage. After they board, Jack stands at the very front of the ship with arms outstretched and says this quote. Fabrizio says "I can see the Statue of Liberty already! Very small, of course." "Titanic" won 11 Oscars in the 1998 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Song for "My Heart Will Go On".
10. 'What we've got here is failure to communicate.' -- 1967 (Hint: This is said by a prison warden.)

Answer: Cool Hand Luke

Paul Newman was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the 1968 Academy Awards for his portrayal of chain gang prisoner Luke in "Cool Hand Luke" but lost out to Rod Steiger in "In the Heat of the Night." Contrary to popular belief, there is no word "a" in this quote before the word "failure" (i.e., The following version is wrong: ...got here is a failure to...).
11. 'Rosebud...' -- 1941 (Hint: This movie was based on the true-life story of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.)

Answer: Citizen Kane

'Citizen Kane' was nominated for Best Picture in the 1942 Academy Awards but was beaten out by 'How Green Was My Valley.' William Randolph Hearst was incensed by this movie.
12. 'I don't feel I have to wipe everybody out, Tom. Just my enemies.' -- 1974 (Hint: Al Pacino says this quote.)

Answer: The Godfather, Part II

'The Godfather: Part II' was the first sequel ever to have won Best Picture in the Academy Awards.
13. "If God hadn't meant for them to be sheared, he wouldn't have made them sheep." -- 1960 (Hint: This movie was a remake of the Japanese film "Seven Samurai.")

Answer: The Magnificent Seven

In this scene bandit leader outlaw Calvera (played by Eli Wallach) makes this observation about Mexican peasants being protected by Chris Adams (played by Yul Brynner) and six other gunfighters. Akira Kurosawa, the writer-director of "Seven Samurai" said that in writing/directing his movie he was inspired by American westerns. I saw it and was surprised at how similar the story lines were.
14. 'Who are those guys?' -- 1969

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) spoke this line as he watched detectives from Pinkerton's National Security Agency trail them after a train robbery. In the years approximately 1850-1911 there was no federal crime-fighting agency, and tracking criminals who crossed state lines fell to private agencies like Pinkerton's. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1970 Academy Awards but lost to "Midnight Cowboy."
15. 'Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.' -- 1939

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

"The Wizard of Oz" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1940 Academy Awards, but lost out to "Gone with the Wind." The song "Over the Rainbow" did win the Oscar for Best Original Song.
16. 'As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.' -- 1990 (Hint: Ray Liotta says this quote.)

Answer: Goodfellas

The real Henry Hill (played by actor Ray Liotta in the movie) was relocated to Redmond, WA when he entered the Witness Protection Program. While there, he ran an Italian restaurant.
17. 'Heerreee's Johnny!' -- 1980 (Hint: This movie is based on an early Stephen King novel.)

Answer: The Shining

Jack Nicholson improvised the line 'Heerreee's Johnny!' as he chopped through the locked bathroom door to get at a terrified Wendy (played by Shelley Duvall). The look in Nicholson's eyes is chilling.
18. 'You talkin' to me?' -- 1976

Answer: Taxi Driver

This was one of Robert De Niro's early films, done just after he played a young Vito Corleone in "The Godfather: Part II" in 1974. Although both De Niro and Jodie Foster were nominated for their acting in "Taxi Driver," neither would win an Oscar in the 1977 Academy Awards.
19. 'I would never see her again. Nor would I learn what became of her.' -- 1971 (Hint: This true story involved a war widow.)

Answer: Summer of '42

Hermie (played by Gary Grimes) is reminiscing about the adventures he and his pals have had that summer and about the young war widow Dorothy (played by Jennifer O'Neill). 'I would never see her again. Nor would I learn what became of her.' This scene still chokes me up. Based on a true story.

In the 1972 Academy Awards, "Summer of '42" was nominated for four Oscars, but only won one (for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score).
20. 'I'll have what she's having.' -- 1989

Answer: When Harry Met Sally

Interesting trivia: The woman in the diner who says 'I'll have what she's having' is played by director Rob Reiner's mother.
21. 'Do you see that I am your friend? Can you see that you will always be my friend?' -- 1990 (Hint: This quote is said by someone on horseback on a high cliff.)

Answer: Dances with Wolves

"Dances with Wolves" won seven Oscars in the 1991 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Kevin Costner was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of U.S. Civil War veteran Lt. John Dunbar, who is exiled to a remote western army outpost and makes friends with some Sioux Indians.

They bestow on him the Indian name of "Dances with Wolves" for his relationship with a local wild wolf.
22. 'And besides, no tinhorn joint like this could ever hold me.' -- 1979 (Hint: This comedy stars George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg as three retirees who rob a bank.)

Answer: Going in Style

George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg play three retirees who get bored with retirement, decide to rob a bank, then go to Las Vegas with the loot and hit it big playing craps. One of my favorite comedies.
23. 'You think I'm hostile now? Wait 'til you see me tonight.' -- 1992 (Hint: This comedy involves a new lawyer trying his first murder case.)

Answer: My Cousin Vinny

New lawyer Vincent Gambini (played by Joe Pesci) calls his girlfriend Mona Lisa Vito (played by Marisa Tomei) to the witness chair as a hostile witness. A hilarious scene. Marisa won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 1993 Academy Awards.
24. 'I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.' -- 1968 (Hint: A computer says these words.)

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey

In this scene the HAL-9000 computer running things on the spaceship Discovery has taken over the spacecraft and refused to open the air lock for space traveler Dr. Dave Bowman (played by Keir Dullea). It speaks this quote when he wants to come back inside after a space walk (voice by Douglas Rain). "2001: A Space Odyssey" won the 1969 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
25. 'These Federation types are cowards. The negotiations will be short.' -- 1999

Answer: Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace

The events in this film take place 32 years before the original "Star Wars" (1977). "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was nominated for three 2000 Academy Awards but did not win the Oscars.
