Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about.' -- 1994 (Hint: A recorded opera has just played over loudspeakers in a prison yard.)

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

'The Shawshank Redemption' was nominated for Best Picture in the 1995 Academy Awards but lost out to 'Forrest Gump'. It was filmed at the defunct Mansfield State Penitentiary in Ohio. The prison was in such poor condition that renovations had to be made to it prior to filming.
2. 'Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food, I'm gonna kick you 'till you're dead!' -- 1987 (Hint: Cher is in this movie.)

Answer: Moonstruck

'Moonstruck' was nominated for Best Picture in the 1988 Academy Awards, but lost out to 'The Last Emperor.' 'Moonstruck' is one of my all-time favorites. If you haven't seen this hilarious movie yet, I highly recommend it.
3. 'This might be the garden spot of the whole country. People may travel hundreds of miles just to get to this spot where we're standing now.' -- 1969 (Hint: This is said by an American who has traveled to Bolivia.)

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The pairing of Paul Newman and Robert Redford in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was so successful other movie scripts were often considered as possible vehicles for them, but the only other feature film they made together was the 1973 movie "The Sting".

They did appear together in the 1991 TV documentary "Here's Looking at You, Warner Bros". "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1970 Academy Awards but lost to "Midnight Cowboy".
4. 'Now that you're in a law firm, you may want to re-think your wardrobe a little.' -- 2000

Answer: Erin Brockovich

"Erin Brockovich" is based on the true story of a single mother who becomes a legal assistant despite her trashy clothes and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company in one of the biggest class-action lawsuits in American history.

The movie based on her story was nominated for Best Picture in the 2001 Academy Awards but was beaten out by "Gladiator". Julia Roberts won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich.
5. 'They're back!' -- 1986

Answer: Poltergeist II: The Other Side

The original 'Poltergeist' is considered by many to be one of the best SciFi-Horror movies ever, but like many sequels, 'Poltergeist II' is a pale imitation of the original.
6. 'He'll probably miss you and hit me.' -- 1973 (Hint: Paul Newman says this quote.)

Answer: The Sting

'The Sting' won the 1974 Academy Award for 'Best Picture.' Much of the music in 'The Sting' was written by African-American composer Scott Joplin around the beginning of the 20th century (with musical adaptations by Marvin Hamlisch) and is known as 'ragtime.' In the late 1890s, Joplin worked at the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Missouri, which provided the title for his best known composition, the 'Maple Leaf Rag', published in 1899.

This was followed a few years later by 'The Entertainer', another well known Joplin composition.
7. 'When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.' -- 1962 (Hint: This is the only movie in which John Wayne uses the word "pilgrim" to refer to a tenderfoot.)

Answer: The Man who Shot Liberty Valance

This movie was directed by John Ford, who had previously won or been nominated for Academy Awards in "The Quiet Man" (1952), "How Green Was My Valley" (1941), "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "The Long Voyage Home" (1940), "Stagecoach" (1939) and "The Informer" (1935), but did not win for this one.
8. 'Thank you for getting me out.' -- 1963 (Hint: This true story is set during World War II.)

Answer: The Great Escape

'The Great Escape' is based on an actual escape during WWII of 76 POWs from Stalag Luft III prison camp near Munich, Germany, but while individual incidents in the film are mostly true, they were rearranged as to both the timing and the people involved.
9. 'Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup.' -- 1990 (Hint: The speaker of this quote entered the Witness Protection Program.)

Answer: Goodfellas

The real Henry Hill (played by actor Ray Liotta in the movie) was relocated to Redmond, WA when he entered the Witness Protection Program. While there, he ran an Italian restaurant. In the 1991 Academy Awards, "Goodfellas" received six nominations for Oscars but only Joe Pesci won (for Best Actor in a Supporting Role) for his portrayal of mobster Tommy DeVito.
10. 'Terminate with extreme prejudice.' -- 1979 (Hint: Marlon Brando is in this movie.)

Answer: Apocalypse Now

The phrase "terminate with extreme prejudice" is military lingo for kill. CIA hit man Capt. Willard (played by Martin Sheen) has been ordered to kill the renegade Col. Kurtz (played by Marlon Brando), ostensibly because Kurtz murdered South Vietnamese officials. Willard observes that "charging a man with murder in Vietnam was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500." In the 1980 Academy Awards, "Apocalypse Now" received eight nominations for Oscars, including Best Picture, Francis Ford Coppola for Best Director, and Robert Duvall for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but only won for Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

The Best Picture that year was won by "Kramer vs. Kramer".
11. 'Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing.' -- 1962 (Hint: Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his acting in this movie.)

Answer: To Kill a Mockingbird

"To Kill a Mockingbird" addressed the sensitive issue (by Depression-era standards) of race relations in the 1930s in the southern U.S. and was based on the best-selling novel by Harper Lee. Her novel won the Pulitzer Prize in Letters in 1961 and has sold more than five million copies in 13 countries.

The movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1963 Academy Awards, but lost out to "Lawrence of Arabia". Gregory Peck won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
12. 'Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.' -- 1942

Answer: Casablanca

'Casablanca' won the 1944 Academy Award for Best Picture.
13. 'Happy people just don't kill their husbands. They just don't.' -- 2001 (Hint: Reese Witherspoon is in this movie and the sequel to it.)

Answer: Legally Blonde

The outdoor scenes in "Legally Blonde" which are supposed to take place on the Harvard campus were filmed on the campus of the University of Southern California (USC).
14. 'Dunbar, not Dumb Bear.' -- 1990 (Hint: In this scene the speaker's name has been misunderstood.)

Answer: Dances with Wolves

Kevin Costner was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the 1991 Academy Awards for his portrayal of Civil War veteran Lt. John Dunbar, who is exiled to a remote western U.S. army outpost and makes friends with some Souix Indians. They bestow on him the Indian name of "Dances with Wolves" for his relationship with a local wild wolf.

In this scene, the Indian Kicking Bird (played by Graham Greene) mistakenly thinks Dunbar's name is Dumb Bear. "Dances with Wolves" won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
15. 'Well, why not? I earned my share same as everybody. Well, I coulda got killed, same as everybody. And I'm wanted by the law, same as everybody.' -- 1967 (Hint: In this scene four bank robbers are dividing up the loot from their latest robbery.)

Answer: Bonnie and Clyde

Estelle Parsons (who spoke this line as Blanche, the wife of Clyde's brother Buck) won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award in the 1968 Academy Awards. "Bonnie and Clyde" was also nominated for Best Picture but lost out to "In the Heat of the Night".
16. 'Ah, then it's a gift.' -- 1965 (Hint: Omar Sharif is in this movie.)

Answer: Dr. Zhivago

Director David Lean was nominated for Best Director in the 1966 Academy Award for his direction of 'Dr. Zhivago', but lost out to 'The Sound of Music'. He had previously won or been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for 'A Passage to India' (1985), 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1963), 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1958), 'Summertime' (1956), 'Great Expectations' (1948) and 'Brief Encounter' (1947).
17. 'And a man in my position can't afford to be made to look ridiculous!' -- 1972 (Hint: The speaker of this quote later finds something in his bed.)

Answer: The Godfather

The cat held by Marlon Brando in the opening scene of "The Godfather" was a stray the actor found while on the lot at Paramount, and was not originally called for in the script. "The Godfather" won Best Picture in the 1973 Academy Award.
18. 'You're not gonna lose the house, everybody has three mortgages nowadays.' -- 1984 (Hint: The plot of this movie is about three professors who start a business.)

Answer: Ghostbusters

The screenplay for this hilarious movie was written by Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis (uncredited). All three also acted in the movie. Ray Parker Jr. was nominated for Best Song in the 1985 Academy Awards for the song "Ghostbusters" but lost out to Stevie Wonder for the song "I Just Called to Say I Love You" in "The Woman in Red".
19. 'Houston, we have a problem.' -- 1995

Answer: Apollo 13

This movie is based on the true story of the ill-fated 13th Apollo mission bound for the moon. America has already achieved their lunar landing goal (by Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin in 1969), so there's little interest in this "routine" flight. That is, until things go very wrong, and prospects of a safe return fade. "Apollo 13" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1996 Academy Awards but lost out to "Braveheart".
20. 'I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, Lou.' -- 1996 (Hint: Frances McDormand and William H. Macy are in this movie.)

Answer: Fargo

Although the credits say otherwise, this film is not, in fact, 'based on a true story.' On November 15, 2001 a 28-year-old Japanese woman, Takako Konishi, was found dead near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. According to witnesses who saw her a few days previously, she had traveled to the area in search of the money buried in the movie, apparently believing the opening caption stating that the film is based on a true story.
21. "Stern, if this factory ever produces a shell that can actually be fired, I'd be very unhappy." - 1993 (Hint: This movie has a character named Oskar.)

Answer: Schindler's List

"Schindler's List" won the 1994 Academy Award for "Best Picture." Liam Neeson was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Oskar Schindler but didn't win.
22. 'Every man on that transport died. Harry wasn't there to save them because you weren't there to save Harry.' -- 1946 (Hint: Jimmy Stewart is in this movie.)

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

"It's a Wonderful Life" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1947 Academy Awards but lost out to "The Best Years of Our Lives".
23. 'Who is this person that speaks to me as though I needed his advice?' -- 1995 (Hint: Mel Gibson is in this movie.)

Answer: Braveheart

"Braveheart" won Best Picture in the 1996 Academy Awards.
24. 'It's okay, I wouldn't remember me either.' -- 1999

Answer: American Beauty

"American Beauty" won Best Picture in the 2000 Academy Awards. This film has been described as "Death of a Salesman" for the nineties. Early in the film, Carolyn (played by Annette Bening) mentions that "the Lomans" just moved out of the house next door. (Willy and Linda Loman are central characters in Arthur Miller's moving and powerful play "Death of a Salesman".)
25. 'They are? Well, as of this moment, they're on DOUBLE, SECRET probation!' -- 1978 (Hint: John Belushi is in this movie.)

Answer: Animal House

Delta house member Stork (at the parade at the end of the movie he pushes the drum major out of the way and leads the marching band down an alley) is played by Douglas Kenney. Kenney is also one of the movie's screenplay co-writers (along with Harold Ramis and Chris Miller) and was a co-founder of the humor magazine National Lampoon. Chris Miller's own fraternity experiences were the basis of several published stories starting in 1974, and these were turned into the 1978 movie "Animal House".
