Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.' -- 1972 (Hint: Al Pacino is in this movie.)

Answer: The Godfather

After Sonny learns the Godfather's driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) had a hand in the assassination attempt on the Godfather, he orders Clemenza "Paulie sold out the old man. I don't want to see him again." Clemenza gets his opportunity when they go driving, supposedly to buy some mattresses.

In this scene Clemenza (Richard Castellano) has told driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) to stop their car so he could relieve himself at the side of the road. While the car is stopped, Rocco Lampone (Tom Rosqui), sitting in the back seat, executes Paulie with a gunshot to the back of the head.

As Clemenza and Rocco leave the car sitting there, Clemenza instructs Rocco to leave the gun but take the cannolis that he had purchased earlier for his wife. "The Godfather" won three Oscars in the 1973 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Marlon Brando won Best Actor in a Leading Role, but refused to accept the award. 8. 'It looks like you will see Berlin before I do.' -- 1963 (Hint: Steve McQueen is in this movie.)

Answer: The Great Escape

Although Steve McQueen did most of his own motorcycle riding in 'The Great Escape,' there was one stunt he did not perform: the hair-raising 60-foot jump over a fence. He attempted this jump, but crashed. It was done by McQueen's friend Bud Elkins, who was managing a Los Angeles-area motorcycle shop when recruited for the stunt. During the climatic motorcycle chase, McQueen rode (in disguise) as one of the pursuing German soldiers, so that in the final sequence, through the magic of editing, he's actually chasing himself.

This movie is based on an actual escape of 76 POWs from Stalag Luft III prison camp near Munich, Germany, but while individual incidents in the film are mostly true, they were rearranged as to both the timing and the people involved.

Answer: Ben-Hur

"Ben-Hur" won 11 Oscars in the 1960 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Charlton Heston won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur, who was captured by the Romans and wound up rowing in slavery. The chariot race scenes at the stadium in Jerusalem were particularly thrilling. One of the very few (and very expensive) 65mm cameras in the world was wrecked during the filming of the chariot race.
10. 'This is bad, man. I've got bad vibes here.' -- 1986 (Hint: This movie is set during the Vietnam War.)

14. 'Sometimes you just gotta say 'what the heck.' -- 1983 (Hint: This quote was said by Joel's father.)

Answer: Risky Business

"Risky Business" was the movie that made Tom Cruise a big star (he played Chicago teenager Joel Goodson, who turned his home into a brothel while his parents were on vacation). Since then he has appeared in such hits as "Top Gun" (1986), "The Color of Money" (1986), "Rain Man" (1988), "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989), "A Few Good Men" (1992), "Mission: Impossible" (1996), "Jerry Maguire" (1996), "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999), "Minority Report" (2002), and "The Last Samurai" (2003).

"Apocalypse Now" is based loosely on Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness." A particularly memorable scene was a massed helicopter assault with composer Richard Wagner's song 'Ride Of The Valkyries' playing in the background.
17. "Oh yeah, a buffer. The family had a lot of buffers!" - 1974

Answer: The Godfather: Part II

In this scene Willie Cicci (Joe Spinell) is testifying before a U.S. Senate committee investigating organized crime in America. Cicci admits he has killed people that the family wanted eliminated, but claims his orders never came directly from Michael Corleone.

The questioning Senator wanted to know if a buffer was always involved. When Cicci expressed puzzlement by this term, the senator explained it was an intermediary who passed on orders. Cicci replies with this quote. This movie continues where the "The Godfather" left off, following the lives in a fictional American crime family.

However, many of the characters in this fictional story are based on people and incidents in real life
18. 'One man's life touches so many others, when he's not there it leaves an awfully big hole.' -- 1946 (Hint: Jimmy Stewart is in this movie.)

19. 'He better be worth it. He better go home and cure a disease or invent a longer-lasting lightbulb.' -- 1998

Answer: Saving Private Ryan

'Saving Private Ryan' was based on the true story of the Niland brothers. One was killed on D-Day while in the 82nd Airborne, one was killed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division, and a third was reported killed that same week in Burma (but later turned up alive). Mrs. Niland received all three death notification telegrams on the same day.

The fourth son was serving with the 101st Airborne and was ordered pulled out of the front lines, but couldn't be found. He survived anyway.
20. 'Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.' -- 1951 (Hint: Marlon Brando is in this movie.)

Answer: A Streetcar Named Desire

"A Streetcar Named Desire" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1952 Academy Awards but was beaten out by "An American in Paris."
21. 'The barbarities of war are seldom committed by abnormal men. The tragedy of war is that these horrors are committed by normal men in abnormal situations.' -- 1980 (Hint: This movie is set during the Boer War.)

Answer: 'Breaker' Morant

"'Breaker' Morant" tells the true story of three Australian soldiers in the Boer War (1899-1902) who are put on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war, is using them as scapegoats.

The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defense puts up a strong fight in the courtroom. The term "Breaker" in the title is the nickname given to Lt. Harry Morant (played by Edward Woodward) for his occupation in civilian life of taming wild horses.
22. 'Don't tell them anything! He hasn't even tortured you yet!' -- 1966 (Hint: This comedy stars Carl Reiner, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Winters, and Paul Ford.)

Answer: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming

In this scene the young son of vacationer Walt Whittaker (Carl Reiner) shouts instructions to his dad when a Russian seaman from a run-aground submarine asks him where there is a "motor automobile" (to get to the village and borrow a boat to pull their submarine free). If you like Jonathan Winters' comedy, you'll like this movie. It's one of my favorites.
23. 'You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.' -- 1944 (Hint: Both Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall are in this movie.)

Answer: To Have and Have Not

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall fell in love during production of "To Have and Have Not." They married in 1945. Interesting trivia: Lauren Bacall first coined the term "Rat Pack" in the early 1950s for the Hollywood drinking circle that included legendary boozers such as her husband Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Swifty Lazar (she first called them "a pack of rats" when she saw the drunken crew).
24. 'You've never been out of college. You don't know what it's like out there. I've worked in the private sector. They expect results.' -- 1984 (Hint: In this scene three professors discuss forming a business after their college throws them out.)

Answer: Ghostbusters

John Belushi was originally slated to play Dr. Peter Venkman in "Ghostbusters", but after his sudden death in 1982 Bill Murray was cast and the role was extensively rewritten. The college scenes were filmed at Columbia University in New York City, but they agreed to this only on the condition the school not be mentioned by name in the film.
25. 'By the way, we had that water brought in especially for you folks. Came from a well in Hinkley.' -- 2000 (Hint: Julia Roberts is in this movie.)

Answer: Erin Brockovich

'Erin Brockovich' was nominated for Best Picture in the 2001 Academy Awards but was beaten out by 'Gladiator'. Julia Roberts won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich.
