Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dirty Dozen

Answer: Archer Maggot

You may remember Telly Savalas as the cuddly, lollipop sucking cop Kojak. But Savalas could also play some very ominous characters. The premise of the 1967 movie, "The Dirty Dozen" was to send incarcerated prisoners, who had nothing to lose, on a 'suicide mission' behind German lines in World War II.

The cast was fantastic, including Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes, etc. Among these prisoners was Archer Maggot, a racist, rapist and a psychopath who almost manages to get them all killed.
2. The King and I

Answer: Monkgut of Siam

Yul Brynner was a bald actor before 'bald' was fashionable. He appeared in such films as "Westworld", "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Ten Commandments". However, he will always be remembered as the king in "The King and I" from 1956. The movie was based on Anna Leonowens' true story of being hired as governess to King Monkgut of Siam in the 1860s (before it became Thailand). The Rodgers and Hammerstein show featured songs like "The March of the Siamese Children" and "Getting to Know You". For many of us, there will never be another 'king' quite like him!
3. Apocalypse Now

Answer: Colonel Walter Kurtz

"Apocalypse Now", released in 1979, was based on Joseph Conrad's novella "The Heart of Darkness". The plot of the movie, set in Vietnam in 1970, involved sending a soldier upriver to find and 'terminate' Colonel Walter Kurtz. Kurtz had started out as a promising career officer but had become increasingly erratic to the point of sociopathy. The role was played by Marlon Brando who, apparently, was going through some difficulty himself accepting direction and performing lines as written.
4. You Only Live Twice

Answer: Ernst Blofeld

Ernst Stavro Blofeld has appeared as James Bond's nemesis in a number of films. My personal favorite is Blofeld's first appearance in 1967 in "You Only Live Twice". He was played by Donald Pleasence with a scar running down the right side of his face and a large white Persian cat on his lap.

He was referred to as "Number 1" as head of the global criminal organization SPECTRE, and was intent on world domination. His character is parodied in the Austin Powers movies as Dr. Evil, with his feline companion Mr. Bigglesworth.
5. Alien 3

Answer: Ellen Ripley

Before you start sending in those correction notices, Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, was only bald in the third film of the franchise, i.e., "Alien 3" from 1992. Ripley continues to be a female role model in that she was not the typical plastic Barbie, with kicks and spins while wearing make-up and high heels. Rather, she is aggressive, smart, rude, tired, empathetic, real and unwavering in her assistance of others, even at the cost of her own life.
6. X-Men

Answer: Professor Charles Xavier

It seems Jean-Luc Picard has moved on or should I say backward in order to lead the "X-Men" as Professor Charles Francis Xavier. The films are based on the Marvel comic books by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The first film of the series was released in 2000. Patrick Stewart plays Xavier or Professor X, a paraplegic who runs a school in Westchester, New York to train mutants born with superhuman abilities. The Professor has a telepathic mind, as well as being a genius and expert in the fields of genetics, psychiatry, biophysics and anthropology.
7. Pulp Fiction

Answer: Marsellus Wallace

In the 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction", Marsellus Wallace is the gangster boss of Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield. He is also the husband of Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) whom you may remember from her dancing or her drug overdose. Wallace is forcefully played by the imposing Ving Rhames; Wallace is a violent man and rape victim himself in Tarantino's brutal movie. He is said to have thrown a man off a balcony for having given his wife a foot massage.
8. Se7en

Answer: John Doe

In my opinion, Kevin Spacey can play just about any part realistically, from a suburban guy going through a mid-life crisis to a famous singer to the devil himself. In the 1995 film "Se7en", Spacey is a serial killer known only as John Doe. He targets people who, as he sees it, represent the seven deadly sins. Veteran Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) works with rookie Mills (Brad Pitt) to try and catch the madman and stop the slaughter.
9. G.I. Jane

Answer: Jordan O'Neill

After Sam died in the movie "Ghost", Demi Moore moved past her grief, shaved her head and appeared as Jordan O'Neill in the 1997 film "G.I. Jane". The plot revolves around the U.S. Navy's new program to integrate women into the Navy Seals. Their first candidate is Lieutenant Jordan O'Neill, chosen specifically for her femininity. (I guess the program heads figured, if the men could resist her, they could resist anyone!) Anyway, she goes through the grueling and demanding training (just like "An Officer and a Gentleman") and finally wins the respect of everyone.
10. Pitch Black

Answer: Richard B. Riddick

"Pitch Black" (2000) was the first movie in "The Chronicles of Riddick" series. The anti-hero and prison convict was played by action star Vin Diesel. In this initial film, the plot has Riddick being transported to prison (through space). The spaceship in which they are travelling is damaged by a comet and they are forced to land on a remote planet, where Riddick escapes. However, he rejoins the group to help save them from the flying creatures who attack the survivors...and a franchise was begun!
