Each of the three companions had a catastrophic event happen that nearly cost them their lives. Sassy fell in the river and went down a waterfall. She was rescued by a kind man, and was reunited with the dogs on their way back from being chased by a mountain lion.

Not long after, Chance was injured by an angry porcupine and was finally treated at the animal shelter. After they escaped the pound and a train, Shadow tumbled into a hole and almost didn't make it home. All three finished their incredible journey together.

Chance barreled his way out of the car, took a sniff and looked around. "Wow, this place is Smell-a-rama!" he exclaimed. "Hallelujah, I've died and gone to Kentucky!" He raced off to chase and bark at the chickens, asking "Which ones of you are regular, and which ones are extra crispy?"

Miss Kate was a friend of Laura's from college and had a ranch where the animals were invited to stay while the family was away. Her neighbor Frank was to watch the animals while she drove her horses to winter grazing. It was a note she left that caused confusion when the animals disappeared.

Chance splashed in the water with the ducks, calling them bath toys. He found a sleeping pig in the barn and wondered what had happened to all the fur. While exploring the chicken coop, Chance met an angry, defensive turkey that chased him away. He ran, promising never to eat a chicken nugget again, and told Shadow he had found a bird the size of a rottweiler.

It was this turkey, who Chance named "Birdzilla", that eventually convinced him to follow Shadow and Sassy on their journey.

It was this poster that the forest rangers who found the pets later recognized and called to say they had been found. By then, the animals had escaped the pound and were well on their way home on their own.

After Chance warned them about the pound, the animals wreaked havoc on the animal shelter. Sassy escaped from the truck and easily eluded the man with the net. She then entered through a window, freed Shadow from his cage, and distracted the dogcatcher while Shadow rescued Chance from the vet who was removing the porcupine quills. All three then made a dash outside, slipped under the fence and vanished.

The astonished vet said, "If I didn't know better, I'd think they had planned it!"

The animals had compassion for the lost little girl because they knew how she felt. Shadow comforted Molly and stayed with her until the next morning when a rescue team was searching for her. Shadow led the way and brought Molly's father to her. The forest rangers recognized them from the fliers and promised to take them home.

As the animals hurried on, Sassy muttered to herself, "After this I intend to live indoors on a velvet cushion filled with bird feathers, and be served filet of mouse on a silver platter..." Her sentence is interrupted when Shadow said they were nearly home and then tumbled into the hole.

This was such a heartbreaking moment. The sun was fading as Shadow laid in the muddy ditch. Chance slid down as Sassy watched from above with glittering blue eyes. Shadow, giving up, said, "I have nothing more to give, Chance, and it is time for you to be on your own." Chance replied, "But I want you with me. I love you, Shadow." Shadow said softly, "You've learned everything you needed, Chance. Now all you have to learn is how to say goodbye." Chance promises that he won't let Shadow give up, and somehow they both make it out of the hole.

As Shadow and Chance were fleeing from the mountain lion, they reached the edge of a cliff and Chance was making his confessions. He told Shadow, "The bones are buried next to the jungle gym and the TV remote control is under the see saw." This gave Shadow the idea to make their own see saw and outsmart the mountain lion.

The kids were outside playing basketball with their new stepdad while Laura and her mother made the Thanksgiving turkey.
