Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color was the balloon that Jamie was playing with at the beginning?

Answer: Pink

While Hope was putting Sassy on the see saw (and Chance was preparing to pounce), Jamie walked by bobbing back and forth with a pink balloon from the wedding decorations.
2. Each of the animals had one experience happen to them during the journey that nearly cost them their lives. In what order did each occur to them?

Answer: Sassy, Chance, Shadow

First, Sassy fell into the river trying to cross and went down the waterfall. She was rescued by a kind man searching for eagles and found her way back to the dogs. Shortly after her return, Chance found a strange-looking "squirrel" and got a little too close.

He ended up with porcupine quills in his jaw, which were later removed by the vets at the pound. When they finally escaped the pound, Shadow fell into a muddy hole by the train tracks and it seemed the journey was over. (But, of course, it wasn't over yet.)
3. What mountain range did the animals cross?

Answer: Sierras

Ironically enough, Peter was learning about the Sierras in school (as he doodled a picture of Shadow). His teacher was pointing to a United States' map and saying that the Sierras extend over fifty miles east and west.
4. What was the last advice that the man who had saved Sassy called out to her?

Answer: "Steer clear of the river!"

The man was resting with Sassy on his lap when she heard Shadow and Chance barking triumphantly after outsmarting the mountain lion. She squirmed away and took off, as her good samaritan called out, "Take care of yourself now. And steer clear of the river!"
5. Which foot did Shadow injure?

Answer: Front, left

It was clear when Shadow was struggling to get out of the steep muddy hole (so sad!) and as he ran back to Peter at the end that he was limping on his front left foot. (He had commented after awakening in the hole that his foot hurt very badly.)
6. Who made the cake at Bob and Laura's wedding?

Answer: Laura's mother

As Bob called for the attention of all the wedding guests, he announced that it was time to cut the cake and that the mother of the bride had made it herself. Of course she smiled proudly and the crowd cheered, until they found out that they didn't need to cut the cake after all... Chance had already eaten half! (Later, when he choked it back up, Jamie cried out that it was "Grandma's cake".)
7. What did the train that nearly hit Sassy have written on the side?

Answer: Southern Pacific

Sassy came probably within centimeters of losing her tail in that close call. When the dogs asked if she was alright, she bragged about laughing at danger and Chance said he would laugh later.
8. Which was not one of the animals's real life names?

Answer: Sandy

If you watched the credits, you would see that Shadow was played by 'Ben', Chance by 'Rattler', and Sassy by 'Tiki'. (It actually appeared, however, that Sassy was played by two cats so Tiki probably had the main role.)
9. On the wedding day, Chance said the lesson he learned was that cake and which do not mix?

Answer: Polyester

Chance had a bit too much wedding cake after chewing up a polyester blouse, and learned his lesson when... you get the idea.
10. Which was not a reason that Sassy gave to Shadow for why they should not leave Kate's ranch?

Answer: It was dangerous

As Kate pulled away in the trailer, Shadow knew something was not right and he decided to take off and shouted, "I'm going home!" He ran off and leaped the fence, as Sassy raced after and cried, "Shadow, wait, it's too far! You don't know the way! What if they come back here looking for us?" Shadow announced that it was time to go, and he was going home. Sassy took off after him, followed by the reluctant Chance.
11. At the end of the movie, Chance wagged his tail and said for the first time in his life that he was what?

Answer: Home

Chance was the narrator and told the story of the journey. His story began with when lived on the streets. It ended with him in the Seaver's yard, after the incredible journey, and Jamie calling him inside. Chance wagged his tail, barked, and ran inside to get some turkey!
12. While on the journey, Shadow mentioned to Chance that Peter used to slip him what food under the table?

Answer: Broccoli

As the mountain lion was secretly following the two, Chance and Shadow loped along talking about what they missed about home. (Especially their favorite food, hot dogs.) Shadow asked Chance if he knew about the broccoli, which was probably the only food Chance didn't want to devour!
13. Where did Kate have to drive the horses while she was watching the animals?

Answer: Winter grazing

When the Seavers arrived to drop off the pets at the ranch, Kate promised to take good care of them except for her "one short trip". She explained that every year she helped drive the horses to winter grazing for a couple of days. Kate had enlisted the help of her neighbor Frank to care for the animals, and that is where the confusion began.
14. How long had the pets been missing when Peter went to the police station?

Answer: One week

Peter went to the San Francisco Police Department to report "three missing members of his family" that had run away "about a week ago". The police officer was not pleased to learn from the descriptions that they were a stray cat and dogs, not people, and said he did not have time. He advised Peter to make reward posters to post.
15. What did the children's grandmother bring for Thanksgiving at the end, to welcome the Seavers back home?

Answer: Pie

In the final scene, before the animals return, Laura was in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day preparing the meal and her mother (seen previously at the wedding) said she had brought a welcome home pie. Laura explained that the kids are outside playing basketball with Bob (who has become accepted in the family).

When Laura went to tell them that the turkey was done, they replied, "Shh!" Jamie called to Chance, and the animals reappeared in time for turkey and Thanksgiving.
