Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Carrie' (1976) is the story of a high-school misfit who becomes the victim of a sick joke involving a bit of rope, a bucket and a whole heap of pig's blood. Who survived?

Answer: Sue, the former mean girl who changed her ways by trying to help Carrie

Sue was the girl who got kicked out of the hall moments before Carrie took her revenge. Tommy and Miss Collins were unlucky to get caught in the middle of all this, but hey, these things happen. Carrie ended up dying in her home when her mother went nuts.
2. 'The Exorcist' (1973) is about a run-of-the-mill everyday 12 y/o girl (Regan) who becomes possessed by a run-of-the-mill everyday ancient demon. Lots of people try to help, but not all survive. Who made it to the credits in one piece?

Answer: Lt. Kinderman, the old cop who is investigating the mysterious happenings

Burke was the first to go from this list. He had his head twisted 180 degrees and was thrown out of a window - I assume he died. Kinderman came onto the scene after Burke's death, but he didn't hang around much. Can't blame him. Both priests died during the exorcism.
3. 'Pet Sematary' (1989) is the story of a bunch of poor spellers who get mixed up in the age old art of resurrection. Who didn't even die once during this film?

Answer: Ellie, the little girl who has psychic dreams and can see dead people

Ellie's attempts to save her family were all in vain, but at least she was staying at her grandparents' house when the corpses of her family rose from the dead and killed each other off. Hence, as Mr. Crandall would say, "sometimes dead is better". Yes.
4. Gordon Fleming just landed a job in place that isn't as normal or as unpossessed as he would've liked. There is something in this place which convinces him that killing his wife and child would be a good idea. What movie is this from?

Answer: 'Session 9' (2001)

Made you think it was 'The Shining', didn't I? Well, apart from the fact that Jack Nicholson plays 'Jack Torrance' in that film, his character doesn't survive. 'Session 9' is about a bunch of guys working in an old mental hospital, and Gordon goes nuts and kills everybody (including his wife and child).
5. Apart from being the spawn of Satan, Damien was just a normal child. Well, that's not really true. Who survived 'The Omen' (1976)?

Answer: Damien, born 6am on the 6th day of the 6th month in the 5th nicest hospital in Europe

Robert was just about to kill Damien when the cops shot him. Prior to this, both Katherine and Father Brennan met with the unfortunate side-effects of gravity.
6. However sometimes nobody gets out alive, as some of these next films have proven. In which film do the baddies leave at least one main character alive?

Answer: 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978)

In the original 'Dawn of the Dead', Peter and Francine are able to make it out of the shopping center alive in a helicopter. But the remake is a different movie entirely, and at the end of this film we see the survivors being ambushed by zombies; hence leading to the assumption that nobody survived. 'Night of the Living Dead' ends with Ben being shot in the head, while the three filmmakers in 'The Blair Witch Project' are never seen again.
7. Though sometimes it's the baddie who gets out alive. In which movie does the baddie/s live to fight another day?

Answer: 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (1974)

'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' ends with the bad guy standing in the middle of the road; perhaps he got run over. I guess we'll never know. In 'An American Werewolf In London', the baddie is also the goddie. Yet, in any case, he was shot by cops and never made the trip to Paris (lucky for him). Furthermore, all the zombies in '28 Days Later' and 'Braindead' were killed.

In '28 Days Later' they all starved to death, while in 'Braindead' they got killed off by a lawnmower.
8. Yet sometimes, just when you think you're in the clear, the baddie comes back and kills you in a whole other movie. Which character made it out alive after their first run in with evil, only to get killed later on in another movie from the same series?

Answer: Father Merrin, the old priest from the original 'Exorcist' (1973)

Kind of a trick this one. Father Merrin did get killed in the original 'Exorcist', but he lives through the prequel which was released in 2004 ('Exorcist: The Beginning'). So he did survive his first run-in with evil, and he was killed later on in another film from that same series. On the other hand, while Ben was the last one standing in 'Night of the Living Dead', he still died in that film.

As for Derek, there was never any sequel to 'Bad Taste'. And while they have made sequels to 'From Dusk till Dawn', Richard Gecko (played by Quentin Tarantino) didn't make it out alive in the original.
9. Though humans aren't the only ones who have a tendency to die in these sorts of movies. Which of the following animals never had to make a trip to the pet sematary?

Answer: Chips, the dog from 'Dawn of the Dead' (2004)

The dog from the 'Dawn of the Dead' remake was lucky, because in that movie it was established that zombies don't eat dogs. Church didn't have to worry about zombies so much, but the cat did get killed by the road. On the other hand, both the dogs from 'Braindead' and 'Alien 3' met less Earthly fates. Paquita's dog was eaten by her boyfriend's zombie mother, while Spike died giving birth to an alien. Such is life.
10. However some people are better at surviving than others. Only one character here has made it though three consecutive films without dying?

Answer: Ash, from the 'Evil Dead' series

Ash was able to make it through the first 'Evil Dead' (1981), even though he was in a precarious situation at the end of that film. We know he made it out OK because he also made it all the way through 'Evil Dead 2' (1987) and 'Army of Darkness' (1993). Ripley was in 4 'Alien' films, but she still didn't make it through 3 consecutive encounters, as she was cloned for 'Alien Resurrection' (1997) after she jumped to her death in 'Alien 3' (1992).

In contrast, Tina and Bub didn't even come close. Tina was the first of Freddy's victims in the original 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' (1984), while Bub was only ever in 'Day of the Dead' (1985), and he was dead throughout that movie.
