Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the greatest movies of all time, it was set in Morocco during World War II. Rushed together last minute to take advantage of the United States entering the war, not many of the higher-ups who made it expected much from it. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" is looked at as one of the best movies of all time. With Humphrey Bogart attempting his first romantic role, and Ingrid Bergman as his ingenue, it tapped into everything a romantic movie can be. None of it was actually filmed in Casablanca, it was done entirely in studio, with one scene being done at a local airport.

It ranks in the top five on "Top 100 Movies of All Time list.
2. Filmed in Kenya, this film starred Meryl Streep and Robert Redford retelling the biography of Isak Dinesen. What was the name of this award winning movie?

Answer: Out of Africa

Out of Africa was the Best Picture Oscar winner in 1985. Wining a total of seven Academy Awards that year, it was filmed in Isak Dinesen's actual house when she was growing up in the African region of Nairobi. It is set during the beginning of the first World War, and chronicles the relationship that blossoms between Isak and Denys Hatton (played by Streep and Redford).
3. A 2006 movie based on the tyranny of Idi Amin tells of a reporter looking into whether Amin has invented a new royal title for himself. Things fall apart on the reporter's stay in the country. What was the title of this film, a movie that earned the actor who played Amin an Oscar?

Answer: The Last King of Scotland

"The Last King of Scotland" was a brutally graphic portrayal of the dictatorship of Uganda's Idi Amin. Forest Whitaker's bipolar portrayal of Idi Amin was difficult to watch, even for those who remembered stories of Amin in their original news reports from the early 1970s. Whitaker nearly swept the awards shows with his performance.
4. Based on true life stories of George and Joy Adamson, wildlife conservationists from Great Britain, it follows the rehabilitation of a single orphaned lion cub and their effort to introduce the cub back into the African wild when it is grown up. Filmed primarily in Kenya, what was the name of this 1966 movie?

Answer: Born Free

The lion cub in question, Elsa, was one of three originally, but the other two were released to zoos. Joy Adamson chose to keep the one, but after the lion caused an elephant stampede in the village they were living in, they were forced to send the lion back to the wild. All four choices are movies that were set in Kenya.
5. In 2004, a movie came out telling the story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel operator from a country in Africa. It tells of Paul using his hotel as a refuge from the genocide going on between rival ethnic groups. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Hotel Rwanda

"Hotel Rwanda" chronicled some of the Rwandan genocide that occurred in 1994 between the Hutus and the Tutsis of Rwanda. Don Cheadle would earn an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of hotelier Paul Rusesabagina. Paul was consulted several times on the brutality he was witness to, and the movie was filmed almost entirely in the streets of Rwanda on location.
6. One of the first films to shoot on location in color in Africa, this 1952 film chronicles British missionaries operating in East Africa during the time of World War I, and the boat operator who comes to rescue one of them. On many Best Movies lists, what was the name of the boat in the movie that skipper Charlie Allnut helmed?

Answer: The African Queen

Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn both earned Oscar nominations for this movie, with Bogart winning the Oscar. Filming was done in Uganda and the Congo, which was a chore as the cameras for Technicolor filming were big and hard to maintain, especially on water scenes.

Many of the crew got sick during filming, and Hepburn was almost injured when a large generator rolled over on the raft they were filming on. A movie not even nominated for Best Picture, it is now on the AFI Top 100 list for Best Films of All Time.
7. Filmed in Mozambique and South Africa, this 2006 movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou. The movie ends chronicling the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme Conference, a conference in Africa intending to eliminate what would be the title of the movie. What is that title?

Answer: Blood Diamond

"Blood Diamond" chronicled the history of the diamond mining industries and how many of them financed war efforts around the area. Set during the wars in Sierra Leone in the 1990s, it ends with one of the miners testifying in the Kimberley conference on the torture of miners to keep them true to the illegalities that, if exposed, would ruin the owners of the diamond companies.
8. Author Michael Crichton has had a number of books and writings put to film with much critical success, including "Jurassic Park", "Coma" and the television show "ER". But this 1995 film set in Africa was not one of them. The plot dealt with finding a rare diamond that would allow the expansion of some technologies in space, but original attempts to go to the mine were met with destruction by a shadowy breed of animal. What movie, starring Laura Linney and Tim Curry, was this?

Answer: Congo

All four of these choices are titles of movies set in Africa, but "Congo" was the movie in question. "Congo" made $81 million domestically at the box office which is respectable, but critics were disappointed with the technology of the gorillas in the movie simply being done by humans in ape suits as opposed to the CGI that was used successfully in "Jurassic Park".

They simply didn't have the computers to pull it off successfully, unlike today as demonstrated in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". Filming was not done in the Congo of Africa, it was done in Costa Rica.
9. Starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman and filmed on location in South Africa, this film was developed from a book titled "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation". What title did they use for the movie?

Answer: Invictus

"Invictus" refers to a poem written by William Ernest Henley that Nelson Mandela had with him during his time in prison. Morgan Freeman earned an Oscar nomination for this film playing Mandela. The story chronicles the Rugby World Cup in the year it was played in South Africa, and Mandela inspiring the team to play not for themselves, but for the newly integrated nation.
10. In 1988, Sigourney Weaver plays the title role of a scientist who gets inspired to travel to Rwanda and learn about the Mountain Gorillas that live there. Earning Weaver an Oscar nomination, the full title of the film was "Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of _______".

Answer: Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey was a Kentucky woman who left the U.S. to research mountain gorillas. She came to discover that many of the gorillas were poached for their hides and heads. Her campaigning against this to Rwandan authorities saved the species from extinction. Sigourney received high marks for her performance, but the movie received good but not stellar reviews. Filming of the movie was done on location in Rwanda.
