Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Morgan Freeman
Answer: Deep Impact
"Deep Impact" (1988) was, like "Armageddon", a film released the same year, a movie about the the threat of a comet or asteroid impact upon the Earth. Elijah Wood played the teenager who first discovered the comet and Morgan Freeman the President of the United States.
2. Hugo Weaving
Answer: The Fellowship of the Ring
Hugo Weaving played the elf-lord Elrond of Rivendell in all three of Sir Peter Jackson's films of Tolkien's novel "The Lord of the Rings", the first of which was "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001). Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins, the hobbit who, while staying with Elrond at Rivendell, volunteered to take the Ring to Mount Doom where it will be destroyed.
The films also increased the role of Elrond's daughter, Arwen, and her love for Aragorn, the future king.
3. Paul Hogan
Answer: Flipper
The movie (1996) takes two of the characters from the popular TV series of the 1960s, "Flipper", and transfers them from the Florida Keys to the Gold Coast of Australia. The teen-aged Sandy Ricks (Elijah Wood) goes to visit his uncle Porter (Paul Hogan) who runs a fishing trawler. On one of their trips out he meets a friendly dolphin, whom he names "Flipper".
4. Kevin Costner
Answer: The War
"The War" (1994) deserves to be better known since the performances by Costner as a Vietnam war veteran come home to Mississippi to recover from PTSD and by Wood as his son Stu were both powerfully compelling and believable. This film raised Elijah Wood's reputation as one of the finest upcoming young actors of the 1990s. Two plots are wound into the film: Stephen's (Costner) recovery from the horrors of the war and his children's project to build a treehouse despite the hostility of local bullies.
5. Macaulay Culkin
Answer: The Good Son
In this 1993 psychopathic thriller Elijah Wood plays 12-year-old Mark who is sent to live with his aunt and uncle after his mother dies. They have a son of the same age named Henry (Macaulay Culkin) who seems cute and likeable on the outside but who is in fact a sadistic sociopath. Most critics had real trouble with the casting of the appealing comic star of "Home Alone" as such an evil and unsympathetic character.
6. Bruce Willis
Answer: North
The title of the 1984 novel on which this movie is based says it all: "North: The Tale of a 9-Year-Old Boy Who Becomes a Free Agent and Travels the World in Search of the Perfect Parents". Elijah Wood plays North who is given the summer by a judge to find a set of 'perfect parents' to replace his own, whom he feels do not appreciate him.
The film is narrated by Bruce Willis who plays a number of roles, including the Easter Bunny who starts the whole unsuccessful search off. It was not a well-received film either by the critics or at the box-office.
7. Mel Gibson
Answer: Forever Young
"Forever Young" (1992) is principally about Mel Gibson's character Daniel McCormick, who in 1939 is part of a project investigating the preservation of human life through cryonic freezing. When his girl friend is seriously injured, he asks to be put in 'cold storage' for one year so he won't have to watch her die. Unfortunately he spends over fifty years in the 'freezer' until accidentally revived by 10-year-old Nat Cooper (Elijah Wood).
The plot proceeds as a love triangle among McCormick, Nat's mother, and McCormick's girl friend, whom he finds out is still alive, though now an old woman.
8. Daryl Sabera
Answer: Spy Kids 3: Game Over
In this instalment of the "Spy Kids" franchise, Elijah Wood has a very brief cameo role as "The Guy". Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabera) is sent inside a virtual reality game to rescue his sister Carmen and to prevent the game's creator, The Toymaker, from taking over the minds of all its players.
As Juni makes his way through the five levels, he learns that there is a story about "The Guy" who will make it to the game's end. This turns out to be Elijah Wood who is electrocuted almost as soon as he appears.
9. Tobey Maguire
Answer: The Ice Storm
This 1997 film is set in the dark days of 1973 and focuses on two families at Thanksgiving. Tobey Maguire plays Paul Hood, a distant and introverted 16-year-old home from boarding school -- much of his role takes place in a train stranded by the ice storm. Elijah Wood plays Mikey Carver, a rather neurotic teenager, who goes for a walk in the ice-storm ... (any more would be a spoiler).
10. Joseph Mazzello
Answer: Radio Flyer
"Radio Flyer" (1992) was an odd mixture of domestic drama and fantasy with an ending that may or not be true. Elijah Wood plays Mike and Joseph Mazzello his younger brother Bobby. Their mother has just re-married and her new husband turns out to be incredibly abusive toward the younger of the two boys. An urban legend inspires them to turn their red wagon into an airplane and at the end Bobby flies away finally to escape the ill-treatment of his step-father.
