Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Alec find the lava rock that he gave to Professor Lindenbrook?

Answer: At a curiosity shop

Alec was in charge of buying a gift for Prof. Lindenbrook with money collected from the student body. He first purchased an inkwell made from ram horns. Then, while passing a curiosity shop, he noticed a lava rock for sale. With the remaining three shillings from the purchase of the inkwell, he purchased the lava rock for the professor to use as a paper weight.
2. What French author wrote "Journey to the Center of the Earth"?

Answer: Jules Verne

Jules Verne was a prolific science fiction writer. He also wrote "Around the World in Eighty Days" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea".
3. After accepting the lava rock from Alec, Professor Lindenbrook invited Alec to dinner at his home. What type of clothing did Alec wear to dinner at the professor's home.

Answer: A kilt

Alec explained to Prof. Lindenbrook, during the dinner invitation, that he had nothing appropriate to wear to dinner, but Prof. Lindenbrook insisted he come regardless. When Alec entered Lindenbrook's home, he immediately stated that none of the clothes he was wearing belonged to him, and that he had borrowed the clothes from his roommate. Alec was a bit ashamed of his own clothes because they were tattered and frayed.
4. While the expedition slept, Carla was awakened by noises. She woke up Prof. Lindenbrook and said she heard footsteps. Lindenbrook insisted that she was just hearing things and to go back to sleep because she was disturbing the rest period of the others in the expedition. Carla told Lindenbrook that because she was a member of the expedition, it was her duty to report the incident. That statement irritated Lindenbrook, so he told Alec to make what sarcastic entry in the expedition log?

Answer: "Enter that Madam Goetabaug heard rats in the attic."

Carla actually did hear footsteps. She heard the footsteps of Count Saknussemm and his servant as they were trying to sneak past the sleeping expedition.
5. What actress played the part of Alec's girlfriend Jenny Lindenbrook?

Answer: Diane Baker

Diane Baker has an extensive filmography in movies and TV. She had parts in "Murder at 1600", "Silence of the Lambs", "The Cable Guy" and "The Net".
6. In order to find the path to the center of the Earth, Lindenbrook had to go to a specific volcanic range. In what country was that range?

Answer: Iceland

Arnie Saknussemm had inscribed on the plumb bob found inside the lava rock, the exact place, which was Iceland, the time, and range to be at in order to find the entrance to the center of the Earth. The nearest city to the range was Reykjavik, which is also the capitol of Iceland.
7. After finding the metal Icelandic plumb bob inside the lava rock, Lindenbrook enlisted the help of Prof. Goetabaug, foremost expert in volcanoes at that time. After not hearing back from Prof. Goetabaug for many weeks, Lindenbrook became suspicious and decided to find him. After finding the hotel and room where Goetabaug was staying, Lindenbrook, Alec, and Hans broke into his room. What did they find?

Answer: Expedition equipment and the dead body of Prof. Goetabaug

When first arriving at the hotel, Lindenbrook asked the desk clerk where he could find Prof. Goetabaug. The desk clerk refused to give Lindenbrook any information about Prof. Goetabaug's room number or his whereabouts. Frustrated with the clerk's reluctance to help, Lindenbrook decided to trick the clerk into revealing Goetabaug's room number. Lindenbrook wrote a note and asked the clerk if she wouldn't mind placing it in Goetabaug's mailbox.

As Lindenbrook started upstairs, he stopped and watched the clerk to see in what mail box she placed the note.

She placed the note in the mailbox for room #29. Lindenbrook, Alec, and Hans then proceeded to Goetabaug's room.
8. When Prof. Lindenbrook first met Carla Goetabaug, he accused her husband of stealing his expedition idea. That statement enraged Carla and she stormed out. How did Carla find out that Lindenbrook was telling the truth?

Answer: She read it in her husband's own diary.

Lindenbrook asked Carla if he could buy all the expedition equipment left in the room, but Carla was so upset with him that she said she'd rather burn it than let him have it. She later gave the equipment to him, providing she be allowed to go on the expedition.
9. While trying to relight a fuse, a giant lizard grabbed Lindenbrook's leg with its tongue. How did Lindenbrook escape the lizard's grasp?

Answer: Alec drove a spike through the lizard's tongue.

When trying to make their way up a volcano shaft to reach the Earth's surface, Lindenbrook and company had to blow up a rock blocking their path. They made a bomb, placed it next to the rock, then poured a path of gunpowder to use as a fuse. The fuse was blown out before it reached the bomb so Lindenbrook ran back to re-light it.

While doing so, a giant lizard grabbed his leg with its tongue. Alec jumped from behind his protective covering, grabbed a hammer and spike that was nearby, and drove the spike through the lizard's tongue.
10. When Lindenbrook and company were thrown clear of the volcano, three of the company were thrown into the sea and rescued. Alec however was thrown into a tree some miles away. What was funny about Alec's situation?

Answer: He was totally naked.

That was a very funny scene. Alec landed in a tree near a convent and the nuns couldn't speak English. They kept trying to coax him down, but being naked, he wasn't about to. Alec kept yelling "Pantaloons! Pantaloons! But don't you bring them yourselves, send a friar, or a monk." Alec then fell out of the tree and picked up a sheep to cover his naughty bits.
