Question 1 of 10
1. Let's see if we get the picture - just so we get off to a sensible beginning;

1971: This film was set in 1951 in a small town called Anarene, Texas. The Korean War was a global concern and two best friends, Sonny and Duane, were dealing with becoming adults and joining the fight. Duane enlisted but Sonny did not. There was a rather tatty movie house in the town (it was an integral place to both the plot and title of the film), and a bar and a lot of teenaged angst flying around. You might recall a character named Sam The Lion from it or another one named Ruth Popper. Which of these answers fits?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. 1987: Bikers who are really vampires corrupt a group of heretofore innocent teenagers. Two new boys move into town named Mike and John and much confusion ensues. Which word fits this one? Hint

Instead of jumping out the window he decides to get drunk and stay that way for days. Naturally, nothing good comes from that, except that his girlfriend Helen tries to stick it out with him. What movie is this or, more accurately, which word is in the title? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's see if we get the picture - just so we get off to a sensible beginning;

Answer: "Last"

"The LAST Picture Show" was a fine film starring Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ben Johnson, Cybil Shepard, Cloris Leachman and Ellen Burstyn, among many others. It was shot in black-and-white, which really helped establish the lives going on in this withering little city. Peter Bogdanovich was the director. (Interesting note: John Ritter was being strongly considered to play the role of Sonny).

A sequel was made in 1990 called "Texasville". It didn't even come close to the original, but it did manage to gather up many of the original cast. But, alas, it was probably one of those sequels that just didn't need made.
2. 1987: Bikers who are really vampires corrupt a group of heretofore innocent teenagers. Two new boys move into town named Mike and John and much confusion ensues. The tagline for this film was: "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire!". Which answer fits this one?

Answer: "Lost"

"The LOST Boys" is the movie in question; quite a spooky thing it was! Mike (played by Jason Patric) was the new kid in town who became nocturnal first, after meeting a beautiful girl at an amusement park. His brother Sam (played by Corey Haim) went in search of a vampire slayer, after noticing his sibling's rather unusual behavior.

The title of the movie is a reference to Peter Pan's friends that he met in Never Never Land-those who never grow up.
3. 1991: Dede is a struggling single Mom trying to raise her son in a sensible way (his name was Fred in the film). Then, oops, it turns out Fred is discovered to be a little genius. Dede is a bit dashed. She is not living in anything close to the 'lap of luxury', but she REALLY wants Fred to get the chance to explore all of the opportunities open to him, while still enjoying the simple joys of growing up. Which word fits this one?

Answer: none of them are right

That would be "LITTLE Man Tate", starring and directed by Jodie Foster. Adam-Hann Byrd starred as the little innocent brainiac Fred and Dianne Wiest gets all the conflict going, as she goes about playing his mentor, which gets Dede a bit fired up. She wants him to be a little boy first, and a gifted scholar when he's ready. Harry Connick, Jr. and David Hyde-Pierce (one of Foster's chums from her college days in real life) were in this one, too.
4. 1945: Poor, poor Don Birnam - he's having a rather bad (OK, totally awful) 4 days of it. He's a writer who can't write at the moment and he's broke and depressed. Instead of jumping out the window he decides to get drunk and stay that way for days. Naturally, nothing good comes from that, except that his girlfriend Helen tries to stick it out with him. What movie is this or, more accurately, which word is in the title?

Answer: "Lost"

Even though this movie is nearly 60 years old it still can pack a punch. "The LOST Weekend", wildy graphic in its day, seems a little mild now, but watching Ray Milland playing "tortured" so well is worth a visit alone. He won, and deserved, the Oscar he got for this one. Jane Wyman played his ladyfriend, Helen St. James (how obvious a character point is that "Saint" bit?).

Interesting note: the liquor industry offered 5 million dollars to Paramount NOT to release this film, as it would surely be bad for their business. Billy Wilder, the director, said it was too bad they hadn't made the offer to him as he would surely have accepted it.
5. 1986: Rob Lowe and Demi Moore have moved in together in Chicago, and are having the hardest time making it work. Lowe plays Danny and Moore plays Debbie and they have two pesky friends, named Bernie and Joan, who make their relationship even more complicated. Pick the right word in the title of this one!

Answer: "Last"

"About LAST Night" was a pretty fun movie based on a play by David Mamet called "Sexual Perversity In Chicago". That title didn't go over too well with anybody so it was quickly changed. Bernie was played by Jim Belushi and Joan was played by Elizabeth Perkins. If anyone paid attention there was a noticeable faux pas at the end of it.

The guys were at a Spring softball practice but in the background the trees were changing colors. But nobody ever said that movies are entirely right in the details.
6. 1962: It's Connecticut in 1912. In this amazing film we have a an aging actor, a drug addicted wife and two pretty messed up sons. One of the sons, as portrayed, is the dramatic version of the fellow who wrote the classic play that this film came from. I can't say more. Which "Long" or "Lost" or "Last" is right on this one?

Answer: "Long"

"LONG Day's Journey Into Night" is, in my opinion, a classic piece. Kate Hepburn was brilliant as the frail mother Mary Tyrone. Ralph Richardson, playing her husband, and Jason Robards and Dean Stockwell portraying the sons were equally up to the task. Eugene O'Neill wrote the play.
7. 1973: Two Navy guys are assigned to do the escorting of an errant fellow marine back to the base, so as to serve out his sentence. The escorters are named Billy Buddusky and Mule Mulhall, and the rascal they look after is Larry Meadows. But, truth is, they're all three a little frisky, and have a great adventure as they go and become friends. Which word fits this one?

Answer: "Last"

"The LAST Detail", directed by Hal Ashby, was a mostly overlooked film but it DID get Jack Nicholson his first nomination for an Oscar as Best Actor (he played Billy). Otis Young played 'Mule', and Randy Quaid was their prisoner, Larry. Oh, and before anyone corrects me, Jack was nominated for a supporting role prior to this one ("Easy Rider") but not in the Lead Actor category.
8. 1959: The cousin of a young, murdered poet goes quite mad after seeing him raped and slain, and then even cannibalized by a pack of "beach boys". None of it qualifies as a good day for any of them! Based on a Tennessee Williams play, which word fits into the title of this ghoulish film?

Answer: "Last"

"Suddenly LAST Summer" was quite a messy story. It was mostly joyless in theme, but good actors worked it up (Liz Taylor, Kate Hepburn, Montgomery Clift) into a very interesting piece of cinema. Did Mr. Williams ever write a happy story?
9. Did Paul Newman and his wife JoAnne Woodward ever act together in a movie with "Long" or "Lost" or "Last" in its title?

Answer: Yes

Yes, they did. "The LONG Hot Summer" in 1958.
10. 1977: A teacher of deaf kids has some problems. She acts like Miss Perfect by day but she is quite the bar hopper by night. She meets all kinds of dubious people as she goes, but finally hooks up with a homicidal one who ends her mixed up life in a jiffy. Which "Long", "Lost" or "Last" movie is this?

Answer: none of them are right

This is, of course, "LOOKING For Mr. Goodbar". Diane Keaton played the teacher and Richard Gere got some first notice as the guy you don't want to bump into while being 'out on the town'. Out of a very good cast, Tuesday Weld was the only actor nominated for an Oscar for her work in it.
