Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title "Return of the King" refers to one of the main characters, who is he?
Answer: Aragorn
As mentioned in the first movie, Aragorn (son of Arathorn) is actually heir to the throne of Gondor. He finally takes his rightful place and takes up Narsil, the broken sword, so as to help Frodo, and to fulfill his destiny.
2. What is the chronological order of the owners of the One Ring?
Obviously, Sauron (the "Lord of The Rings") was the very first owner of the One Ring. He did, after all, make the Ring. He was defeated by Isildur, who cut off his fingers using Narsil, and ownership passed to him. When the Ring betrayed him, it then remained in the bottom of a river for 2,500 years until Deagol picks it up. Smeagol then kills Deagol and becomes the new owner of the Ring as well as obtaining a new name: Gollum.
It stays with Gollum for 500 years before abandoning him and being found by Biblo Baggins.
After 60 years, Bilbo leaves the Ring for Frodo (Hobbits seem to be the only ones able to willingly let go of the Ring; first Bilbo then Sam). Frodo is then tasked with destroying the Ring, and he undertakes the journey which the trilogy is all about. Along his journey, Sam obtains temporary ownership because he mistakenly thinks Frodo's dead but returns the Ring to Frodo after they meet up again.
In the end, Frodo doesn't throw the Ring but Gollum steals it back from him by biting Frodo's finger off.
As Gollum is rejoicing with being reunited with his Precious, Frodo fights with him until they fall off the cliff. Frodo manages to cling on to the cliff but Gollum falls down and dies holding the Ring, thereby destroying the Ring also. All the others mentioned have come in close contact with the Ring but never owned it nor held it in their hands.
3. Who said the line, "That still only counts as one!"?
Answer: Gimli
After Legolas brings down an Oliphant, Gimli angrily says that it only counts as one, since they're competing against each other for who has the most number of kills.
4. Who does Aragorn finally end up with?
Answer: Arwen
Eowyn was in love with him, but he never returned the love (although, according to Viggo Mortensen in "LOTR:TTT" special features dvd, "there is great affection" between them). He always was, and will be, in love with Arwen.
5. Arwen leaves Middle Earth to go the Valinor, the Undying Lands?
Answer: False
At the end of "The Two Towers," we are led to believe that she does leave and in "Return of The King", they show her in the company of Elves going towards the harbor. However, while traveling in the forest, she foresees her future son with Aragorn and she returns to Rivendell, because she realizes that she has to be with Aragorn because of her love for him.
6. Who is the man Eowyn ends up with?
Answer: Faramir
In the book, it was stated clearly that Eowyn marries Faramir. In the movie, however, we just get a glimpse of it in the end, during Aragorn's coronation, as Eowyn and Faramir smile at each other. According to Peter Jackson, more of Eowyn's and Faramir's love story will be placed in the extended edition of the dvd. I can't wait!
7. Who does Samwise Gamgee marry?
Answer: Rosie Cotton
He'd been in love with her for the longest time but only managed to muster up the courage to do anything about it after he returned from his travels with Frodo.
8. Who foresaw that Sauron wishes to attack Minas Tirith?
Answer: Pippin
Pippin had unwittingly glimpsed the enemy's plan while he held the Palantir, and Sauron had interrogated him. This was symbolized by Pippin's vision of "a white tree in a courtyard of stone... the tree was burning" and Gandalf correctly deduced that it was Minas Tirith.
9. Who is the greatest of the Nazgul?
Answer: The Witch King
He was also the one who stabbed Frodo in Weathertop, as seen in the first movie, "The Fellowship of The Ring". No man can kill him and it took a Hobbit and a woman (Merry and Eowyn) for him to be defeated.
10. No man can defeat the Greatest of the Nine (Ringwraiths)?
Answer: True
It was a Hobbit, Merry, and a woman, Eowyn, who finally defeated The Witch King. Merry stabbed the Witch King in the back of the leg and Eowyn ran her sword through his face. Hm... so I wonder why nobody ever bothered to send women to fight off the Nazgul, so that they'd die? Hee!
