Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Die Monster Die", which starred Boris Karloff and told of a scientist who uses a strange meteorite in experiments to enhance growth, was based on which short story by Lovecraft?

Answer: The Colour Out of Space

Instead of the meteorite landing on a remote American farm, this movie had it working its deadly mutating magic in England, and made farmer Nahum Gardner into scientist Nahum Witley (played by Karloff).
2. Legendary schlock film-maker Stuart Gordon often drew on Lovecraft's work for his films. One of his most popular is "Re-Animator", the tale of a young medical student who is determined to overcome death itself. Who played the 'hero', Herbert West, in this and two sequels?

Answer: Jeffrey Combs ("The Frighteners", "House on Haunted Hill")

Jeffrey Combs has appeared in many guises, not least in multiple roles in several branches of the "Star Trek" franchise, but for many he is the definitive Herbert West, despite appearing with black hair in the films (Lovecraft describes West as 'tow-headed').
3. In the 1970s a film version was made of the story "The Dunwich Horror", in which the son of a terrible deity from beyond the stars tries to summon his father to our world. Who played the role of the semi-human sorcerer, Wilbur Whateley?

Answer: Dean Stockwell ("Air Force One", "Quantum Leap")

The other three actors have all appeared in various film versions of Lovecraftian tales, but not as Whateley. Stockwell reappeared in the made-for-TV 2009 remake of the story, in which he played the role of Whateley's opponent, Dr Henry Armitage.
4. Roger Corman, known for his many adaptations of the works of Edgar Allen Poe, also dabbled his toe in the Cthulhu Mythos. Which of his films was based on Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", in which a young man is possessed by his ancestor?

Answer: The Haunted Palace

The film was actually billed as "Edgar Allen Poe's The Haunted Palace", but only the title came from Poe - the plot and characters were all from Lovecraft. Vincent Price played Charles Dexter Ward, who inherited a manor in the village of Arkham and ended up possessed by his ancestor Joseph Curwen, an ancient warlock.
5. In the comedy movie "The Last Lovecraft", H.P.'s unfortunate descendant is told he is the only one who can stand between mankind and horrors battled and documented by his ancestor. Who plays Jeff, the Last Lovecraft?

Answer: Kyle Davis ("Friday the 13th (2009)", "Dexter")

At the start of the film Jeff Phillips is working in a dead-end office job when a mysterious professor tells him he is the last living descendant of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, and entrusts to him a relic which must be kept from the cultists of the Old Ones at all costs.

Kyle Davis played Donnie in the remake of "Friday the 13th", and appeared as Steve Dorsey in several episodes of "Dexter"; he also has been seen as Dallas in the TV series "American Horror Story".
6. "The Unnameable", a monster flick based on a short story just seven pages long, was enough of a hit to spark a sequel, "The Unnameable Returns". In it, a group of college kids come across a hideous creature which has been trapped in a certain location since the 18th century. Where do they find it?

Answer: The old Winthrop house

The she-creature was the daughter of Joshua Winthrop, who confined his nightmare progeny to the house by use of magic spells from "The Necronomicon". The sequel boasted character actors David Warner and John Rhys-Davies among the cast; the climax was set in the Miskatonic Library.
7. What veteran director (who also directed "Stuck" and "Space Truckers") went to Spain to create a movie based on the story "Dagon", in which the cult of a terrible marine god is uncovered in a decaying port town?

Answer: Stuart Gordon

Stuart Gordon's first major film as a director was "Re-Animator"; he was also responsible for "From Beyond", "Dolls", "Castle Freak" and "The Pit and the Pendulum", as well as two episodes of the television "Masters of Horror" - "The Black Cat" and "Dreams In the Witch-House".
8. Jeffrey Combs made his mark in Lovecraftian circles as Herbert West, the famous re-animator - but who did he play in the 1990s portmanteau movie "Necronomicon" (in which a man finds the famously evil book guarded by monks, and reads from it several unpleasant tales)?

Answer: H.P. Lovecraft

This film also stars David Warner, and features a cameo by horror director Brian Yuzna ("Bride of Re-Animator", "From Beyond"). The other characters listed have all featured in Lovecraftian films, but not in this one.
9. Which of these films is NOT inspired by or based on the works of Lovecraft?

Answer: Nightbreed

"Nightbreed" is from the works of Clive Barker; "The Resurrected" is based on "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", "From Beyond" on the 1920 story of the same title, and "Pickman's Muse" on "Pickman's Model".
10. Even films not directly derived from Lovecraft tip the hat to the master. Which blockbuster film opened on a black screen on which appeared a quote from "De Vermis Mysteriis", one of the volumes of evil lore closely associated with the Cthulhu Mythos? The film also featured Nazi occultists, Rasputin, and the demon Sammael.

Answer: Hellboy

"In the coldest regions of space, the monstrous entities Ogdru Jahad - the seven Gods of Chaos - slumber in their prison, waiting to reclaim Earth... and burn the heavens." Guillermo del Toro is a notorious Lovecraft fan and has been trying for many years to get a film of "At the Mountains of Madness" off the ground.
