Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'Is that soil in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?'

Answer: The Great Escape

Extra Question - Only 3 prisoners successfully escaped and were not recaptured - two were played by Charles Bronson and James Coburn. Can you name the other one?
2. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'Sorry Cliff, but wouldn't motorbikes be more rebellious than a bus?'

Answer: Summer Holiday

A couple of days ago, I heard 'Wired for Sound' by Cliff Richard on the TV, and now I can't stop singing it. How annoying.
3. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? '(sung) It's not unusual ... to be shot by aliens ... Badabadabada'

Answer: Mars Attacks

In my opinion, Tim Burton's films have gone downhill recently ('Sleepy Hollow' and the 'Planet of the Apes' remake were disappointing). 'Mars Attacks' wasn't as good as I expected, but I did like the Tom Jones song at the end.
4. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'I don't trust this explorer, your majesty. He says he's from Italy, but he sounds French to me.'

Answer: 1492

Released in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 'discovery' of America, and starring the Frenchman Gerard Depardieu as an Italian explorer setting out on behalf of the Spanish Queen played by the American Sigourney Weaver. Who actually discovered America is a matter of debate - Leif Eriksson, Basque Fishermen and of course the native peoples are all candidates - but Christopher Columbus at least brought the existence of the continent to the attention of the rest of the world.
5. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'Alas poor Yorick, I knew him, Mel.'

Answer: Hamlet (1990)

I thought Mel Gibson gave a very good performance in the 1990 Franco Zeffirelli version (against the expectations of some critics). If you're wondering, the other versions starred Kenneth Branagh (1996), Richard Burton (1964) and Laurence Olivier (1948) in the title role, but there have been countless other adaptations.

The line 'Alas Poor Yorick, I knew him well' is of course a common misquote - its actually 'Alas Poor Yorick, I knew him Horatio ...'. Normally, the part of Yorick is played by a skull, although Kenneth Branagh cast the British comedian Ken Dodd.
6. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'Choose Life. Choose a colour TV. Choose a career in Hollywood. Choose the Force. Choose a Duet with Nicole Kidman.'

Answer: Trainspotting

I read an interview with Kevin McKidd, who played Tommy in 'Trainspotting'. Apparently he went on holiday immediately after filming ended, and as a result missed out on appearing in the famous '1,2,3,4,5' poster which advertised the film. The other people who did appear in the poster (Ewan Macgregor in particular) went on to much more successful careers, partly due to their faces appearing on every street corner.

It's a shame, as I think Kevin's performance was the most poignant in the film.
7. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'Alright Richard. If you don't like the colour, we'll take it back to the shop. There's no need to scream.'

Answer: The Robe

Richard Burton stars as the Roman who is driven mad by the robe of Jesus.
8. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? '(sung) This is ground control to Major Tom ... Dig me out my legs are numb ...'

Answer: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

David Bowie's character suffers a horrendous fate, being buried alive up to his neck and left in the sun (but this is apparently ok because he was mean to his brother). Music for the film was provided by another star, Ryuichi Sakamoto (who, together with David Sylvian (formerly of 'Japan') wrote the marvelous theme tune, 'Forbidden Colours').
9. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'OK Class. I'm going to teach you 3 things - non-violence, respect for others ... and kung fu.'

Answer: Dangerous Minds

Michelle Pfeiffer as an ex-marine? Please.
10. Which movie might have contained the following line (but didn't)? 'He wants a brain. He wants a heart. He wants courage. And I want to be able to sing like Eva Cassidy.'

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

Eva Cassidy died tragically early (I believe she was 33) but her music has had enormous posthumous success in the UK.
