Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie "Brokeback Mountain" (2005) took place in Wyoming, but was filmed almost entirely in which Canadian province/territory?

Answer: Alberta

The Rocky Mountains travel through both the US and Canada. "Brokeback Mountain" was filmed in various places around the Canadian section of the Rockies, mostly in southwestern Alberta. Filming sites include Calgary, Elbow Falls, Cowley and Fort Macleod, all cities/towns in Alberta.
2. "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) had some scenes when the main character Frank Abagnale was living in Europe. In order to save production costs, in which Canadian province were these scenes filmed?

Answer: Quebec

Not surprisingly because of the history of French Colonization in the area, Montreal and Quebec City both have many areas that are very reminiscent of France. The producers realized this, and shot the scenes that were supposed to be of Abagnale living in France in Quebec instead. This saved production costs, and Montreal and Quebec City created an authentic look in the film.
3. Which Robin Williams movie was filmed in Toronto and Boston in 1996, for release in 1997?

Answer: Good Will Hunting

"Good Will Hunting" was shot over five months in 1996. Locations for filming include Toronto and Boston. The movie's famous classroom scenes were filmed at the University of Toronto and Toronto's Central Technical School instead of Harvard and MIT as it appears in the movie.

A professor of mathematics from the University of Toronto, Patrick O'Donnell, also acted as the math consultant for the film production.
4. Which comedy about a loser forced to return to elementary school when he was in his 20s was filmed in the Greater Toronto Area for release in 1995?

Answer: Billy Madison

"Billy Madison", starring Adam Sandler, was filmed in Southern Ontario. Main filming sites include the Northern Secondary School in Toronto, John Ross Robertson Junior Public School in Toronto, and the Parkwood Estate in Oshawa, just east of Toronto. Filming also occurred at several other locations around Toronto, Oshawa and Stouffville (northeast of Toronto).
5. The movie "Capote" (2005), about Truman Capote's reaction to a murderous crime in Kansas, was actually filmed in which Canadian prairie province?

Answer: Manitoba

"Capote" is a biographical film about some murders that took place in Kansas in the 1950s. It was filmed in Manitoba, and features sites in Winnipeg and surrounding areas including the Manitoba Legislative Building, Gilbart's Funeral Home in Selkirk, Manitoba, and the Stony Mountain Institution just outside Winnipeg. Stony Mountain is the oldest federal correctional centre in Canada.
6. The movie "Cool Runnings" (1993) is a film that was shot in Canada, and loosely based on an actual Jamaican bobsled team that participated in which winter Olympic Games?

Answer: 1988

The four-man bobsled team from Jamaica competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. The film is fictional, but based on the team that did compete and crash at the Olympics that year. The movie about this warm-weather country with a cold-weather team was filmed in Calgary. Footage of the Jamaican run at the 1988 Olympics was used in the movie to show the actual crash that was experienced by the team that year.
7. Which high-grossing action-adventure film from 2004 shared filming locations between Canada and other international filming destinations like Tokyo, Hawaii and Scotland?

Answer: The Day After Tomorrow

"The Day After Tomorrow" is one of the highest grossing movies ever to be fully or partially filmed in Canada. It was the sixth-highest grossing of all films released in 2004 (including all movies not filmed in Canada). The award-winning movie is a science-fiction disaster film that shows the catastrophic effects of global warming. Canadian filming sites include Toronto and Montreal.
8. Which 1982 Sylvester Stallone movie was filmed in Golden Ears Provincial Park, Pitt Lake, Pitt Meadows and Hope, all in British Columbia?

Answer: Rambo: First Blood

This entire Rambo movie was shot in Canada. The US and Canada have different firearms laws. For this reason, special permits needed to be in place before the extravagant firearms that were used in the movie were able to be imported to Canada so that filming could take place.

The film was supposed to take place in the state of Washington, but British Columbia provided the actual backdrop for this one.
9. Which Olympic city hosted the filming of "Blades of Glory" (2007) that starred Will Ferrell?

Answer: Montreal

The city of Montreal, Quebec was the main backdrop for "Blades of Glory". All of the outdoor skating scenes were shot at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. The famous chase scene in the movie was shot in Montreal's Olympic Village that had been built to house athletes for the Summer Olympics in 1976.
10. Which western Canadian province/territory served as a backdrop for three of the movies in the "Twilight" series?

Answer: British Columbia

Vancouver, British Columbia and a few other places in the British Columbia Lower Mainland served as the setting for three of the four movies in the "Twilight Saga". In fact, Forks High School in the films is actually the David Fraser Secondary School in Vancouver, BC.
