Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Malcolm and Marie have just arrived home from what event?

Answer: Film premiere

Malcolm is a film director and the two of them have arrived home from the premiere of a film he made. Malcolm seems to be in a good mood, putting on music and dancing. He is excited about receiving reviews of his movie and is in good spirits but notices that Marie is upset.
2. Marie is not as happy as Malcolm when they arrive home. Why does she says she's upset?

Answer: He didn't thank her in his speech.

Malcolm is excited and happy and attempts to engage Marie in sexual relations but she is not interested. He persists in asking her what's bothering her and she tells him that he did not thank her in a speech he made at the event. He apparently thanked everyone else who was involved with the making of the film or supported him in the making of the film but not her.

He is really sorry but she is not OK with it at all.
3. Marie, dressed in a beautiful and sexy dress, makes a rather plain meal for Malcolm when they get home. What does she make?

Answer: Mac and cheese

The two are dressed so elegantly and are in a beautiful, obviously expensive house. Marie takes out a pot and makes Malcolm mac and cheese. I thought that was funny given how fancy and elevated everything around them was. Before Malcolm gets a chance to eat it though, they start arguing because Marie is upset.

She leaves the room and Malcolm still digs into his mac and cheese, apparently more hungry than agitated about their fight.
4. Who is the main character in the film that Malcolm has made?

Answer: Imani

The main character of Malcolm's film is a young black woman named Imani who is struggling with drug addiction. Marie believes that she is the inspiration for the character in the film because the storyline mirrors her life. She is upset that she wasn't thanked for the film because of the very large role she believes she played in the film existing.

She tells Malcolm that he would never have been able to so honestly portray the struggles of drug addiction that Imani went through if it weren't for his relationship with Marie.
5. Malcolm angrily describes past relationships he's had to Marie. Where is she when he does this?

Answer: In the tub

Marie takes a bath and as she and Malcolm continue to argue about her role in the film and how he perceives and recognizes her, she calls his talent mediocre. She insists that she is the reason why his film was so authentic. He describes to her many past relationships he's had and the impact each of the women had on the main character that he created.

He finally tells Marie that she has influenced only one small piece of the character and that piece is lack of hope. It is a very powerful scene and the fact that Marie is naked in the tub makes the stripping away of her confidence in the role she had in the creation of the character all the more brutal.
6. Malcom and Marie give a name to the female white film critic he met. What do they name her?

Answer: Karen

Malcolm talks about the reviewers he met and in particular an interaction with a white female critic who compared his work to other black directors. He was not happy to be compared only to black directors and mentions William Wyler as an example of a director he aspires to be like.

He tells Marie how he used the reference of William Wyler, a white director famous for the movie "Ben-Hur" as a way to show 'Karen' that she is being racist in only mentioning black directors. Her name isn't given in the film, she is simply called by the name 'Karen' which has popularly come to mean an insult of a certain type of annoying white woman.
7. When Malcolm finally sees his review, how does he react?

Answer: With anger

The review by 'Karen' the critic comes in and he is furious. The review is generally very positive, praising him for his work, the storyline and the authenticity of the character. He is really angry that his work is interpreted as being political when that wasn't the point of the film.

He rants and rants about the review while Marie watches him with amusement, telling him he can't take a compliment or constructive criticism.
8. In one scene in the movie, Marie seems to still be struggling with the weight of her addiction and as she is talking to Malcolm, handles what dangerous object?

Answer: Knife

Marie shares with Malcolm that she is still a drug addict and talks about the horrible things she does in order to feed her addiction. She is frightening as she has a knife that she places on the floor in front of Malcolm. When she is finished describing the pain of drug addiction, she tells him she was actually acting.

She was believable and authentic and Malcolm is impressed. Marie wants to know why he didn't give the role of the main character to her when she could've portrayed it so well.
9. What happens with Malcolm and Marie at the end of the movie?

Answer: They stand together outdoors looking toward the distance.

Malcolm and Marie have argued intensely for most of the night about some very deep issues with their relationship. They finally head to bed calmly and don't argue as they fall asleep. When Malcolm wakes up in the morning, Marie is not in bed and he searches the house for her. He sees her outside and joins her. It isn't certain what will happen to the two of them as the movie ends.
10. The entire film is shot in what way?

Answer: Black and white

The film features only the two main characters and is dialogue heavy. It is shot entirely in black and white which is vastly different from their colorful and complicated relationship. In an interview about the movie, actress Zendaya who plays Marie shares that the decision to film in black and white is to add a sense of timelessness to the movie.

It is also a nod to the black and white era in Hollywood when there weren't black film-makers who were as present at the time.
