Answer: A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy

"A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy" is a light romantic comedy set in the early 1900s starring Allen, Farrow, Jose Ferrer, Julie Hagerty, Tony Roberts and Mary Steenburgen. The movie's action revolves around a weekend gathering of couples at the home of Andrew Hobbs (Allen) and his wife (Steenburgen). Old relationships are revisited and new relationships begun, helped by plenty of sneaking around.

The part of Ariel was written for Diane Keaton, but she was too busy with other projects at the time. Mia Farrow took the part and was nominated for a Golden Raspberry as worst actress for her performance.

The movie was filmed concurrently with Zelig, but "Sex Comedy" was released in the summer of 1982 while Zelig was not released until the following summer. Farrow and Keaton both appear in "Radio Days" (1987) for which Allen directs and provides narration.

In "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993) the part of Carol was intended for Farrow but was played instead by Keaton, following the discovery of an affair between Allen and Farrow's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. Keaton was subsequently nominated for a Gloden Globe award for best performance by an actress in a comedymusical. "Bananas" was released in 1971 and featured Allen with his second wife, Louise Lasser.

"Fireball 500" (1966) was the last film Avalon and Funicello would make together until 1987 and the movie "Back to the Beach". Dave Owens (Avalon) is a stock car racer. Jane Harris (Funicello) and Sonny Leander (Fabian) are along for the ride. Naturally the two guys have a little competition for the girl.

This was not a great movie, but the attempt is understandable. The beach movies had probably run their full course in 1965 when they finished "Doctor Goldfoot & the Bikini Machine" with Vincent Price. "Thunder Alley" (1967) stars Funicello with Fabian. "Head" (1968) pairs Funicello with the popular '60s band The Monkees. "I'll Take Sweden" (1965) is an Avalon feature with Tuesday Weld.

Answer: Christmas Vacation

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is apparently not happy with receiving a one year membership to the jelly of the month club instead of his normal Christmas bonus. And, that is far from his only holiday problem in "Christmas Vacation" (1989). This exchange, in front of the entire family, is only funnier because Clark is wearing a Santa hat.

The cast also includes Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki, Diane Ladd, E.G. Marshall, and Randy Quaid. In addition to Chase and Quaid two other "Saturday Night Live" alumni appear in the film, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brian Doyle-Murray.

This is the third of the "Vacation" movies, following the original "Vacation" in 1983, and "European Vacation" in 1985. "Vegas Vacation" would follow in 1997.

Answer: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966) won five Oscars and was nominated for eight others. Elizabeth Taylor won best actress, and Sandy Dennis won best actress in a supporting role. Richard Burton was nominated for best actor, and George Segal was nominated for best supporting actor.

In fact, in every category for which it was eligible the film was nominated for an Academy Award, and every credited cast member was also nominated. At the time this was the most expensive black and white film ever made.

The movie was the first ever given a tag for adults only by the MPAA. Taylor was married eight times, twice to Burton. Burton was married five times, including twice to Taylor. The pair is probably best remembered for their roles in "Cleopatra" (1963). "The Taming of the Shrew" (1967) also starred Burton and Taylor. "The Night of the Iguana" (1964) featured Burton with Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr. "Giant" (1956) paired Taylor with Rock Hudon and James Dean.

Doris Day starred with Rock Hudson in three films, "Pillow Talk" (1959), "Lover Come Back" (1961), and "Send Me No Flowers" (1964). Tony Randall also stars in all three films. The 2003 movie "Down with Love", with Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, is reminiscent of the Hudson-Day films.

It also includes Tony Randall, and one background shot includes footage from "Pillow Talk". Hudson starred in "Giant" (1956) with Elizabeth Taylor, and the TV series "McMillan and Wife" with Susan Saint James. Hudson passed away due to complications from AIDS in 1985.

While he never publicly acknowledged that he was homosexual it was later confirmed in the biography "Rock Hudson: His Story". James Garner was paired with Day twice, in "Move Over, Darling" (1963) and "The Thrill of it All" (1963). Day starred with Brian Keith in "With Six You Get Eggroll" (1968), and with David Niven in "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" (1960).

In the 1978 movie "The End" Sonny Lawson (Reynolds) is told that he is dying from a rare disease and he elects to kill himself instead. After failing in this attempt he meets Marlon (Dom DeLuise), at the psychiatric hospital. Marlon just wants to help. Sally Field plays the girlfriend in a black comedy that also includes Strother Martin, Joanne Woodward, Norman Fell, Myrna Loy, Kristy McNichol, Pat O'Brien, Robby Benson, and Carl Reiner.

The film was directed by Reynolds. Loy and O'Brien play the part of Sonny Lawson's parents.

This was their second film appearance as a married couple, the first being 47 years previous in "Consolation Marriage". This movie was the only time Field appeared in a film with her step-father, Jock Mahoney. The 1978 movie "Hooper" also starred Reynolds and Field. "Soapdish" (1991) starred Field with Kevin Kline. Reynolds turned down the role at the request of his then wife, Loni Anderson, because Reynolds and Field were publicly known to have previously had a romantic relationship. "Murphy's Romance" (1985) paired Field with James Garner. "The Cannonball Run" (1981) featured Reynolds with Farrah Fawcett, Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman.

Answer: Joe Versus the Volcano

"Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan along with Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, and Abe Vigoda. Hanks plays a hypochondriac who believes that he is dying and makes a deal in which he will jump into a tropical volcano instead, in the interest of appeasing the local volcano God. Of course money is involved, in the form of mineral rights.

This doesn't sound like the plot of a romantic comedy, but this is Hanks and Ryan we are discussing and love generally conquers, well, almost everything. Even movie lava and brain cloud can't stop a good love story.

This quote shows Patricia's (Ryan) surprise that Joe (Hanks) is willing to jump into a volcano based on his terminal condition when he never even visited a second physician. Ryan portrays three different characters in the movie, and provides the voice for a flight attendant.

When Hanks leaves his miserable job in the process he packs three books, "Robinson Crusoe", "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Odyssey" which when combined do a pretty fair job of foreshadowing the entire movie. "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993) and "You've Got Mail" (1998) also star Hanks and Ryan. "I.Q." (1994) features Ryan with Tim Robbins and Walter Matthau.

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton have maintained a romantic relationship since meeting during filming of "Planet of the Apes" (2001). Carter often appears in Burton's films. Johnny Depp is a good friend of Burton and the two have worked together frequently since their first collaboration on "Edward Scissorhands" (1990). "Swordfish" (2001) is a crime thriller starring Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and John Travolta. A secret stash of billions of dollars is eventually going to attract some attention. Stealing is OK if it is for a good cause. The end justifies the means. Uh, right? What would you be willing to do to fight international terrorism? "The Prestige" (2006) is a mystery thiller with a huge cast including Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Piper Perabo, Scarlett Johansson, and even David Bowie, but it did not include Berry. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009) stars Jackman in the movie that gives us the back story on his character Wolverine, but Berry, and her character Storm, do not make an appearance. "Van Helsing" (2004) pairs Jackman with Kate Beckinsale.

Julia Roberts played Julianne Potter in "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997), Anna Scott in "Notting Hill" (1999), Vivian Ward in "Pretty Woman" (1990) and Shelby Eatenton Latcherie in "Steel Magnolias" (1989).
