Mickey Rourke-The Good, Bad, & Ugly Quiz

Mickey played Private Reese in '1941', a movie directed by Steven Spielberg. It was a small part but he got to meet some of the best of the time; John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, and Ned Beatty, just to name a few. The movie was a comedy about a California town that thought they were being invaded by Japanese. Some of the events in the movie were apparently based on real events.

Mickey was born in New York in 1952 and moved to Florida where he trained as a boxer. By 1972 he had a record of twenty wins, six defeats, and two concussions. Doctors told him to take a couple of years off from boxing.

He played an arsonist in 'Body Heat'. He didn't have much screen time but again got the opportunity to rub elbows with some screen greats like Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, Richard Crenna, and Ted Danson.

Turner and Hurt were lovers and Turner wanted her husband dead so she convinced Hurt to murder him. He hired Rourke to cover the crime with a fire. Then the police started getting information and evidence that pointed them to Hurt. Who tried to get him convicted? Rent the movie!

The film was about an erotic, sadomasochistic relationship between Rourke's character and Basinger's character. It was not a commercial success in the U.S. but was very successful internationally and on video. There were two direct-to-video sequels made. Mickey reprised his role in one, but not the other and Kim wasn't in either sequel.

Answer: Lisa Bonet

There was controversy before the movie even premiered, because of Lisa Bonet's character and nudity, incest and a violent death. She was previously known for her role as Bill Cosby's daughter on 'The Cosby Show'. I guess there was too much change in her image, too quickly for some critics. Robert DeNiro turned out to be the devil and had orchestrated the activities of Rourke.

The movie included cannibalism, incest, voodoo, repressed memories, etc.

Answer: Wild Orchid

'Wild Orchid' was so sexy that they were going to get an X rating (this was before there was NC-17) so some of the love scenes between Rourke and Otis were edited. Rourke's character thought Otis' character was uptight and he played mind games with her, to break down her defenses. In the meantime, she was breaking down years of walls that he had built up.

Rourke married Otis in 1992 and was arrested for spousal abuse in 1994. They divorced in 1998.

Answer: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man

Two motorcycle riding, drinking buddies wanted to help a friend save his bar, so they plotted to steal money from the corrupt bank that was trying to foreclose on the bar. They accidentally stole drugs instead and things went down hill from there. It was a fun movie, but not a great one. Daniel Baldwin, Robert Ginty, Vanessa Williams and Tia Carrere were also in it.

Answer: Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Twenty some roles after 'Harley Davidson' and twelve years later, Robert Rodriguez offered him a part in this movie that starred Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Johnny Depp. This was the third film of the 'Mariachi Trilogy'. The mariachi was Banderas, and oddly, he didn't really have a huge part in the third movie. There was a failed coup, Banderas saved the Mexican president, and he continued to search for the men responsible for his wife's murder.

Over the years, some directors claimed that working with Mickey was dangerous because he was unpredictable. Allegedly, he turned down the role of Eliot Ness in 'The Untouchables', Nick Nolte's part in '48 Hours', Chris Lambert's part in 'Highlander', and the part of Johnny Ringo in 'Tombstone', just to name a few.

Answer: It was film noir, made to resemble a comic book.

The movie was a series of short stories, it was filmed with very few colors, made to resemble a comic book (graphic novel) and some characters were heavily made up to resemble the character they were playing.

Although Mickey received some awards for his part in 'Sin City', when a similar part was offered, he declined, stating he didn't like wearing all the makeup that was needed for the character and the film noir look.

Answer: The Wrestler

'The Wrestler' was about a has-been pro wrestler. Originally, Mickey didn't like the script, but with some concessions, he agreed to play Randy 'The Ram' Robinson. Rourke was nominated for a Oscar and a Golden Globe.

The movie was about a wrestler who was a pro in the 1980s. He had one comeback match, enjoyed the limelight again, and had a heart attack after the bout was over. He was scheduled for another match but warned by his doctor not to do it. He tried to start a relationship with a woman, repair a relationship with his daughter and do something other than wrestle. He screwed all that up and went back to wrestling. The film ended without letting the audience know what the outcome of the bout was.

Between 1991 and 2003 Mickey went back to his first love, boxing, where he sustained several injuries. He had plastic surgery to repair the injuries and admitted he made some bad choices in plastic surgeons. Unfortunately, his sensuality and rugged good looks, that made him so attractive years and years before, had been replaced by really rugged looks.

Answer: The Informers

This movie was based on a book by Bret Ellis, who also wrote 'American Psycho' and 'Less Than Zero'. It was a series of stories about people at the top and bottom of the heap in the 1980s. It was loaded with some great 1980's music.

Mickey credited Catholicism, psychiatry, and a love of animals for his good mental health. He has written a few scripts that have been made into movies. He was the music supervisor, as well as a writer and star of the movie 'Bullet', released in 1996. He has protested for and made public service announcements for PETA (animal rights organization). Mickey has credited his chihuahuas with keeping him alive when he was really down and out.
