Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "Nobility is not a birthright; it is defined by one's own actions."?

Answer: Robin Hood

Robin and Marian have reached an important point in their renewed relationship. She thinks he is just "a spoiled bully who burned her hair", and though he might have been that way at one time, fighting in the Crusades and being in prison have changed him.

He has seen leaders do foolish things and "the lowliest squire pull a spear from his own body to defend a dying horse." It is much better to live in the forest with the peasants than continue being a nobleman, especially when he holds such contempt for the Sheriff, and what the Sheriff and barons plan to do.
2. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our maker..."?

Answer: Friar Tuck

"...and glory to his bounty by learning about BEER." Don't you love Friar Tuck? In this scene he is instructing the peasants in Robin's tree village. What is his message really about? Friar Tuck is difficult to convince at first ("Do you yield?" "I'd rather roast in Hell."), but becomes fiercely loyal to Robin because he can see that Robin is a good man who is fighting for a just cause. Don't get me wrong; the Friar definitely has his faults.

He likes his beer a bit too much, and he is openly prejudice toward Azeem, but he takes his responsibility as a man of the cloth very seriously.

It seems fitting that Friar Tuck is the one to kill the evil Bishop of Hereford, who is in cahoots with the Sheriff.
3. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "I'll do it for you."?

Answer: Lady Marian

Is Marian in love with the cause or the man at this point? Both, likely. She has visited in the camp in the forest. She has seen the weapons and coin that have been stolen from the Sheriff, and realizes that he is stockpiling this wealth to bribe the barons and turn them against her cousin, King Richard.

He has has been away from England for a very long time fighting in the Crusades. Robin believes she is the person to send a message to the King, that the King will be more likely to believe what Marian tells him. Marian has a lot to lose if this plan doesn't work, and she refuses to do it for the King.

She will, however, do it for Robin. Unfortunately, Marian's message is intercepted by the Sheriff, and she is brought to Nottingham under house arrest.
4. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "It's amazing I'm sane."?

Answer: Sheriff of Nottingham

The Sheriff is making a point to Marian. This quote comes from the Sheriff as he is talking to a group of children, who have been taken prisoner along with their parents after Robin's tree village is destroyed. Marian realizes that the Sheriff is capable of hurting anyone who might get in his way.

In the movie we do not learn much about the Sheriff's childhood, except for the fact that he never knew his parents. He obviously has great affection for Mortianna, the witch. The rumor among the peasants is that she raised him. Marian's attempt to get a message to King Richard has landed her in Nottingham as the Sheriff's prisoner.

The Sheriff and his witch have decided that he has to marry Marian; taking a bride of royal blood will give him the power he needs to overthrow the King. Of course, Marian doesn't want anything to do with that, but she realizes the extent of the Sheriff's maliciousness when he arranges prisoner executions in celebration of their nuptials. "I have no choice." "That's true."
5. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "You whine like a mule."?

Answer: Azeem

Azeem is introduced at the beginning of the movie and is an automatic favorite. He is wise, smart and clearly understands all of the knowledge of his homeland. It is apparent that he believes Robin to be an illiterate fool. Remember the scene when they are escaping from Guy of Grisbourne, when he finds them at Marian's castle? Robin has never seen a telescope before! ("How did your uneducated kind ever take Jerusalem"?) Robin is not sure if he should trust Azeem, even after their long trip from Constantinople to England. Azeem, however, has taken a vow. Robin rescued him from prison and saved his life (he had a death sentence - something to do with another man's wife), and he will stay with Robin until he can return the favor.

The thing about it is that Azeem "will fulfill his vow" when he chooses. Time after time, Robin believes his life is in danger and Azeem is too slow to help. "You whine like a mule. Fight harder," was Azeem's response when Robin complained that he had no help in the first encounter with Little John's men.
6. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?"?

Answer: Guy of Grisbourne

"Because it will hurt more, you twit!" The sheriff is furious with Guy. Guy had the first opportunity to kill Robin when he returned to England and failed. Now Robin has attacked the Sheriff in the Nottingham Chapel of all places, and cut the sheriff's face. "I'll cut his heart out with a spoon. ...and keep the stitches short".

After making another mistake and losing a huge load of coin and weapons to Robin's clever men, the Sheriff kills Guy in a fit of rage. "Well at least I didn't use a spoon..."
7. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" whose wife replies, "I've given birth to eight babies. Don't talk to me about gettin' hurt ya big ox."?

Answer: Little John

Fanny, Little John's wife, is recovering from the recent difficult birth of her eighth child. In all probability, she would have died if it hadn't been for Azeem. He knew a way to deliver the breach baby, saying that he had seen it done before on animals. Anyway, Fanny wants to help with their final plan - to take over Nottingham during the celebration for the Sheriff and Marian's nuptials. John says, "Are you bleedin' cracked girl? You'd get hurt"! Robin is the one who decides to include Fanny in the plan.
8. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "Will you stay with us and finish what you started?"?

Answer: Will Scarlet

When Robin left to go to the Holy Land, he was estranged from his father. Eventually it is revealed that they had an argument about his father becoming involved with another woman after Robin's mother's death. In order to placate his son, Lord Locksley ended the relationship.

It is unclear whether he knew the woman had his son - Will Scarlet. Will hates Robin at first, thinking him is a "spoiled little rich boy." After the sheriff ordered the destruction of the tree village, Will finds himself "daring to believe..."
9. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "Something vexes thee."?

Answer: Mortianna

The sheriff is angry. He has put a price on Robin's head, but even the poor people who desperately need the money will not turn him in. "No more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas"! Mortianna notices his agitation and offers advice. We do not learn much about Mortianna, the Sheriff's witch, but he affectionately calls her "milady", and appears to respect her.

She was the one to recommend to "put thy own issue on the throne, ripe with royal blood." Who is the closest royal woman? Why, Marian, of course!
10. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" who said, "Hold. I speak."?

Answer: King Richard

The evil sheriff is dead and so is the bishop. Robin and his men have liberated the prisoners. Robin rescued the Lady. They kiss. The final scene shows their wedding in the forest. Does anyone object to the marriage of this man and woman? Well, it's King Richard back from the Crusades. "Thanks to you, I still have a throne". He wants to give the bride away.
